Chapter Nineteen·The Dialogue of the Messenger·Verses 1–51
Sanatkumāra continues the story: when Nārada, having taken his leave, has gone to heaven, Jālandhara, on hearing of Pārvatī's incomparable beauty from him, becomes stricken with the fever of desire; his reason destroyed and utterly deluded, he summons his messenger Rāhu, the son of Siṃhikā, and, greeting him, addresses him. He instructs Rāhu to go to Mount Kailāsa, where dwells the ash-smeared, matted-haired, dispassionate ascetic yogī named Śambhu, and, fearlessly, to put to him this message: what use has a forest-dwelling yogī, attended only by ghosts and piśācas, for a jewel of a wife, when Jālandhara himself, lord of the whole moving and unmoving world, stands ready to receive her? Jālandhara boasts of all the treasures subject to him — Indra's elephant and horse seized by force, the Pārijāta tree, Brahmā's swan-drawn chariot standing in his courtyard, Kubera's treasure-jewels, Varuṇa's gold-raining parasol and noose, his father's ever-fresh garland Kiñjalkinī, Death's own power of Utkrāntidā wrested from Death, and ever-pure garments given by Agni — and demands that Śiva, in turn, give up his own jewel of a wife. Hearing this, Rāhu is ushered by Nandin into Śiva's awe-inspiring assembly; overwhelmed at the sight of the god of gods, radiant with ash and divine ornaments, he bows and, prompted by a signal, delivers Jālandhara's message nearly verbatim, adding that the auspicious daughter of Himavat cannot fittingly be the wife of one who haunts the cremation ground, wears bones, and goes naked, and demanding that Śiva hand her over as tribute to a mightier king. As Rāhu speaks, a terrible being — lion-faced, tongue lolling, eyes ablaze, gaunt and immense like another Nṛsiṃha — bursts forth from the space between Śiva's eyebrows and rushes at him; Rāhu flees in terror but is seized just outside the hall. Crying out to Mahādeva as a suppliant brāhmaṇa about to be devoured by this fearsome servant, Rāhu begs for protection; Śiva, ever compassionate to the helpless, orders his gaṇa to release the messenger, since one who has taken refuge must be sheltered, not punished — and, on hearing the word 'brāhmaṇa,' the being at once lets Rāhu go. Now ravenous, the being approaches Śiva in a plaintive voice, lamenting that his meal has been taken from him and begging to know what he may eat; the playful, wonder-working lord tells him, if his hunger is so severe, to devour the flesh of his own hands and feet. Obeying, the being consumes his own limbs until only his head remains; delighted and astonished at this feat, Sadāśiva names him Kīrtimukha, declares him a great gaṇa and hero, a terror to the wicked, and his own eternal door-keeper, dear to him and to be honored in his worship — decreeing that whoever fails to first worship Kīrtimukha offers Śiva a worship that is in vain.
