Sanatkumāra tells how, with Jālandhara ruling the earth as its righteous overlord, the gods find themselves masterless and sorrowful, and take refuge in Śiva; pleased by their praise, Mahādeva sends Nārada, at the gods' entreaty, to accomplish their purpose. Reaching Jālandhara's city, Nārada is welcomed with honor and reverence by Indra and the other gods, who explain to him their sorrow: driven from their own abodes and stripped of their lordship by the mighty demon Jālandhara, with even Hṛṣīkeśa brought under his sway and dwelling, together with Lakṣmī, in the demon's own house — they beg Nārada, come to them by the will of fate, to work for Jālandhara's destruction. Nārada reassures them that he will accomplish their purpose by his own power, and departs for Jālandhara's court to see the demon dear to the dānavas. Jālandhara receives him with great devotion, seats him with honor, and asks the purpose of his visit. Nārada replies that, having gone by chance to the peak of Kailāsa — a vast, gem-lit forest of wish-fulfilling trees thronging with wish-granting cows — he beheld there Śiva, seated with Umā, radiant, three-eyed, moon-crested, and wondered whether such splendor could exist anywhere else in the three worlds; recalling then Jālandhara's own prosperity, he says, he has come to see it. Jālandhara respectfully displays his entire treasury, and the pleased Nārada, prompted by the Lord, enumerates it: Indra's elephant Airāvata, the Sun's horse Uccaiḥśravas, the wish-fulfilling tree, Kubera's treasures, Brahmā's swan-drawn chariot, and every excellent jewel in heaven, earth, and the netherworld, all gathered in Jālandhara's house. Yet, Nārada says, the supreme jewel among wives is missing from that house, and without her all these treasures shine in vain; he urges Jālandhara to obtain that jewel among women. Inflamed with desire on hearing this, Jālandhara asks where that jewel may be found, vowing to bring her from anywhere in the universe. Nārada tells him of the beautiful, sky-clad yogi Śambhu who dwells on the loveliest slopes of Kailāsa with his wife, lovely in every limb and marked with every auspicious sign, named Pārvatī — a beauty unrivaled anywhere, astonishing even to great yogis and worthy of every praise, in whose ocean of loveliness Brahmā himself once lost his composure, and by whose playfulness even the passionless, self-governed foe of Kāma [Śiva] was brought under her sway; such is the prosperity of him who enjoys that jewel among women, Nārada says, that even Jālandhara, lord of every other jewel, cannot claim its equal. Having spoken thus, the world-renowned celestial sage Nārada, intent on serving the gods' cause, departs through the sky.
