Chapter Seventeen · The Battle between Viṣṇu and Jālandhara · Verses 1–50

Escalating the battle from the previous chapters, the mighty demons — wielding tridents, axes, and paṭṭiśas — strike at the terrified gods, whose bodies are pierced through by demon weapons; Indra and the rest flee the field. Seeing them in flight, Hṛṣīkeśa mounts Garuḍa and swiftly comes to fight, resplendent with the Sudarśana discus, bearing conch, sword, mace, and the Śārṅga bow, wrathful and skilled in every kind of warfare; he twangs the Śārṅga bow, filling the three worlds with its roar, and beheads crores of demons with the arrows loosed from it. Tormented by the wind of Garuḍa's wings, the demons whirl through the sky like storm-driven clouds. Seeing his demon-host so afflicted, the great demon Jālandhara, terror of the gods, grows enraged and, seeing Viṣṇu trampling the demons, rushes to fight him, letting out a roar so tremendous that it splits the ears of the demon lords and makes the whole world tremble. A great battle then breaks out between Viṣṇu and the demon-lord, their arrows filling the sky until it seems to leave no space, astonishing gods, demons, sages, and siddhas alike. Viṣṇu severs Jālandhara's banner, parasol, bow, and arrows with volleys of shafts and strikes him in the chest with a single arrow; Jālandhara leaps up, mace in hand, strikes Garuḍa on the head and fells him to the ground, then wounds Viṣṇu in the chest with a blazing trident. Viṣṇu, laughing, cuts Jālandhara's mace apart with his sword and, twanging the drawn Śārṅga, pierces him with sharp arrows; enraged, he strikes Jālandhara with a fearsome shaft, but the demon cuts that arrow down and, in turn, strikes Viṣṇu's chest. The two exchange arrow after arrow — each cutting down what the other looses, Viṣṇu roaring like a lion as he nocks fresh shafts — until Jālandhara at last cuts the Śārṅga bow itself. Undeterred, the now-bowless Keśava hurls his great mace at Jālandhara; blazing like fire, it strikes true, yet the mighty demon does not so much as flinch, as though merely struck by a garland of flowers. Enraged, Jālandhara hurls a fiery trident at Hari; remembering Śiva's lotus feet, Viṣṇu swiftly cuts it down with his sword Nandaka. The instant the trident is severed, Jālandhara leaps forward and strikes Viṣṇu's chest with his bare fist; Viṣṇu, disregarding the pain, strikes back at Jālandhara's chest with his own clenched fist, and the two great warriors fall to hand-to-hand combat, pummeling each other with arms, fists, and knees until the earth resounds. Having fought thus at great length, Viṣṇu grows astonished and weary at heart. Then the illusion-wielding lord, pleased, foremost among the masters of māyā, addresses the demon king in a voice deep as thunder, praising him as blessed and unafraid even before the mightiest of weapons, declaring that he has slain many fierce demons with these very weapons but has never before seen so great a hero in the three worlds; well pleased by his valor, Viṣṇu bids Jālandhara ask for any boon — however difficult to grant — that is in his heart. Hearing this, the wise demon king Jālandhara answers: if the gracious lord is truly pleased, let him grant this boon — that he dwell in Jālandhara's own house, together with Jālandhara's sister (Mahālakṣmī) and his own retinue. Troubled at heart on hearing this request, the lord Hari nonetheless says, "So be it," and thereafter dwells, together with all the hosts of gods, in Jālandhara's city along with Ramā (Lakṣmī); the overjoyed Jālandhara likewise comes to dwell in his own home together with his sister and Viṣṇu. Jālandhara then sets demons over the offices of the gods and, well pleased, returns to the earth, bringing under his own sway whatever treasures had been amassed among gods, gandharvas, and siddhas; he establishes the mighty demon Niśumbha in the netherworld and brings Śeṣa and the other serpent-lords up to the earth, makes gods, gandharvas, siddhas, serpents, rākṣasas, and men into citizens of his own city, and rules the three worlds. Thus, having brought the gods under his sway, Jālandhara protects his subjects righteously, as a father protects his own sons, so that under his righteous rule none is seen to be sick, sorrowful, wasted, or destitute.

[Jālandhara said:] "If you are pleased, O gracious one, grant me this boon: dwell in my house, together with my sister and with me, with your retinue."

Noteभावुक here functions as a vocative epithet for Viṣṇu (from the root bhū, roughly 'existing one' or 'gracious one'); kept here as an untranslated form of address ("हे भावुक!") rather than glossed for its sense, so it is rendered here descriptively rather than with a fixed equivalent. The 'sister' (मद्भगिनी) is not named in this verse itself, but is understood as महालक्ष्मी (Mahālakṣmī); this agrees with verse 43 below, where the text itself names her रमा (Ramā), an epithet of Lakṣmī.
