Chapter Sixteen · Description of the Gods' Battle · Verses 1–44

Sanatkumāra resumes the tale of the war with the demon Jālandhara: seeing the demon coming on again, all the gods, headed by Vāsava (Indra), trembled with fear and at once fled together to Vaikuṇṭha, where, placing Prajāpati at their head, all of them, together with Prajāpati, bowed and praised Viṣṇu — Hṛṣīkeśa, the mighty-armed, the destroyer of all demons — with a hymn recalling his successive forms: the fish who brought back the Vedas and sported in the flood-ocean with the righteous king Satyavrata; the tortoise who bore Mount Mandara as the gods laboured mightily to churn the ocean; the boar who bore the earth, the support of all beings, upon his snout; the dwarf named Upendra who beguiled the lord of demons, Bali, in the form of a Brāhmaṇa; Paraśurāma, who made the kṣatriyas kṣatriya-less and, angered, was hostile to the wicked for his mother's sake; Rāma, the joy of the world, the man of moral bounds, the swift ender of Rāvaṇa, lord of Sītā; the deeply mysterious Kṛṣṇa, the supreme self, given to sporting with Rādhā and to manifold play; the one of hidden body who took the form of a Jina and a Buddha, seemingly denying the Vedas, as the teacher of yoga and Lakṣmī's lord; Kalki, ender of the mlecchas, of boundless power, establisher of true dharma; Kapila, the great-souled teacher of Sāṅkhya who taught the Sāṅkhya-yoga to his mother Devahūti; the supreme paramahaṃsa who declares the highest knowledge, the ordainer whose form is knowledge itself, by whom the self is set at peace; and Vedavyāsa, who divided the Vedas and composed the Purāṇas for the good of all the worlds. Thus, in these fish-and-other bodies ever intent on his devotees' business, the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the universe, to him — Brahmā himself — homage is offered; and to him who removes the affliction of his own servants, giver of happiness and auspiciousness, clad in yellow garments, Hari who rides Garuḍa, the sole doer of every act, the giver of refuge; to the thunderbolt that destroys the sorrows of the immortals afflicted by the demon, who reclines upon the couch of Śeṣa, whose eyes are the sun and moon. The gods, ocean of mercy, lord of Ramā, they cry, calling on him to protect his refuge-seekers: Jālandhara has driven all the gods from heaven, has expelled the sun, moon, and fire from their places, and has driven the king of serpents and Dharmarāja out of the netherworld, so that the gods now wander about like mere mortals, deprived of their glory, and they have come to him for refuge, begging him to devise that demon's death. Hearing this abject speech, Madhusūdana, the ocean of compassion, replied in a voice deep as thunderclouds, telling the gods to cast off fear, for he himself would go to the battle and match his valour against the demon Jālandhara; and so saying, the foe of demons, his heart troubled, rose up at once and, out of compassion, being ever fond of his devotees, mounted Garuḍa in haste. Seeing her beloved departing with the gods, ocean-born Lakṣmī, with joined palms and tearful eyes, spoke: since she is ever his beloved and devoted wife, how can her own brother be slain by him in battle? Viṣṇu answers that he will indeed match his valour against the demon Jālandhara and, praised by the gods, go swiftly to the war, but that — both because Jālandhara arose from a portion of Rudra and by Brahmā's own word, and out of love for her — this Jālandhara shall not in truth be slain by him. So saying, Viṣṇu, mounted on Garuḍa and bearing conch, discus, mace, and sword, sped off to battle with Indra and the other gods; roaring like a lion amid the gods who blazed with his own radiance, he swiftly reached the very place where the demon Jālandhara was. There the demon-hosts, buffeted by the windstorm of the wings of Garuḍa, younger brother of Aruṇa, whirled about the sky like clouds tossed by a gale; and Jālandhara, seeing his demons so buffeted, uttered an angry challenge and rushed swiftly upon Viṣṇu. Meanwhile the gods, delighted and nourished by Hari's own splendour, joined battle with great strength; and Jālandhara, beholding the divine army arrayed and eager for war, commanded his own exceedingly fierce demons for the fight. Jālandhara cries out to his demon champions to wage this hard-fought battle today against Indra and the other powerful but ever-cowardly immortals — summoning the hundred-thousand Mauryas, the hundred Dhaumras, the ten-million Asuras and Kālakeyas alike, the hundred-thousand Kālakas, Daurhṛdas, and Kaṅkas, and every other demon with his own forces, to march out at his command, all arrayed with vast armies and manifold weapons, fearless and free of doubt — and he calls on Śumbha and Niśumbha, mighty in valour, to destroy in an instant these gods who are cowardly and contemptible in war. Thus commanded by Jālandhara, those demons skilled in war, all fought together with their fourfold armies — striking one another down with maces, sharp arrows, spears, paṭṭiśas, lances, some with axes and tridents; and there too, with yet other manifold weapons, the great-hero gods, filled with the strength of Hṛṣīkeśa together with their forces, fought on, loosing sharp arrows and roaring like lions — some with very sharp arrows, some with clubs and lances, some with axes and tridents, striking one another down. Thus a great battle broke out between the gods and the demons, exceedingly fierce, striking fear even into sages and siddhas.

[Sanatkumāra said:] The demons, thus commanded by Jālandhara, skilled in warfare, all those Asuras fought, endowed with their fourfold armies.

With maces and sharp arrows, with spears, paṭṭiśas, and lances, some with axes and tridents, they struck one another down.

There, with yet other manifold weapons, those forces struck one another down; and the gods too, great heroes endowed with Hṛṣīkeśa's strength, fought on, loosing sharp arrows and roaring like lions.

Some with very sharp arrows, some with clubs and lances, some with axes and tridents, they struck one another down.

Thus a great battle broke out between the gods and the demons, exceedingly fierce, striking fear even into sages and siddhas.
