Sanatkumāra narrates that once Jālandhara, the noble-minded son of the ocean and husband of Vṛndā, was seated in his own assembly together with his wife and all the asuras, when the resplendent guru Bhārgava (Śukra) arrived, radiant as a mass of embodied light; the asuras and Jālandhara himself rose and bowed to him with reverence, and after blessing them Śukra took his seat. Surveying his assembly with delight, Jālandhara — his sovereign command still unimpaired — noticed Rāhu present there with his head severed, and asked Śukra who had done this and to relate the whole matter truly. Remembering Śiva's feet, Śukra tells the story of the churning of the ocean: how the gods, once defeated by the daitya Bali, took refuge with Viṣṇu and, at his bidding, struck a deceitful pact with the asuras to churn the ocean for amṛta; how the gods stole the jewels that emerged, drank the amṛta by trickery, and, strengthened by it, defeated the asuras; and how Hari beheaded Rāhu in the assembly of the gods as he sat drinking the nectar. Hearing this full account of the churning, the theft, the asuras' defeat, and the gods' drinking of amṛta, Jālandhara grows furious at the violation of his own father the ocean, and sends his messenger Ghasmara — who wryly notes that though he bears the name "Ghasmara," he is no glutton — to Indra's court, demanding the return of the stolen jewels and Indra's submission, on pain of war. Indra, recalling that the ocean had long sheltered his mountain and asura enemies, sends back through the messenger a defiant refusal, justifying the churning; this provokes Jālandhara to muster his daitya armies by the crore under commanders such as Śumbha and Niśumbha and march on heaven. A fierce battle breaks out between gods and demons, the battlefield running with blood; Śukra revives Jālandhara's slain daityas with the Sañjīvinī spell and mantra-charged drops of water, while Bṛhaspati (Aṅgiras) repeatedly restores the fallen gods with divine herbs fetched from Mount Droṇa. When Jālandhara, enraged to see the gods rising again and again, questions Śukra about it, the guru reveals the source of their revival and counsels him to uproot Mount Droṇa itself and cast it into the sea — which Jālandhara does with his own two arms, cutting off Bṛhaspati's source of herbs. Finding the mountain gone, the terrified Bṛhaspati comes to the gods and tells them to flee, for Jālandhara — born of a portion of Rudra himself, arisen because of Indra's own offense against Śiva — cannot be defeated. Their courage broken, Indra and all the gods abandon hope of victory and flee in every direction; Jālandhara triumphantly enters Amarāvatī amid conches and cries of victory, while the routed gods take refuge in the cave of the golden mountain (Sumeru). The chapter closes with Jālandhara installing Śumbha and the other chief daityas, each separately, in the offices once held by Indra and the other gods, before himself going to the golden mountain's cave in pursuit of the fleeing gods.

"Hari, ever a partisan of the gods, cut off the head of Rāhu as he sat drinking the amṛta there in the assembly of the gods."
NoteThe compound पक्षपाती हरेस्सदा (= हरेः सदा) is grammatically ambiguous: read with हरेः as a genitive, it could mean "[Rāhu, who was] ever partial to Hari['s side]" (i.e. Rāhu had disguised himself as one of the gods to drink the amṛta); alternatively it can describe Hari himself as "ever partial to Indra/the gods." The translation here follows the latter reading.

The wise messenger, Ghasmara, sent by the son of the ocean, went swiftly to heaven, which was thronged with all the gods.
NoteThe reading जगामारमलं (jagāmāramalaṃ) is metrically and grammatically obscure in the received text. It is rendered here as "went very swiftly," treating the compound as an adverbial expression of speed rather than emending or further parsing it.
दूतस्त्रिविष्टपं तस्य (dūtastriviṣṭapaṃ tasya) — "the messenger went to his (Indra's) heaven,जगामारमलं सुधीः (jagāmāramalaṃ sudhīḥ) — swiftly, the wise one,घस्मरोऽम्बुधिबालस्य (ghasmaro'mbudhibālasya) — Ghasmara, [messenger] of the son of the ocean,सर्वदेवसमन्वितम् (sarvadevasamanvitam) — [heaven] thronged with all the gods"

Having gone there and quickly reached the Sudharmā assembly-hall, that messenger, his head unbowed with pride, spoke this word to the lord of the gods.
तत्र गत्वा स दूतस्तु (tatra gatvā sa dūtastu) — "having gone there, that messenger,सुधर्मां प्राप्य सत्वरम् (sudharmāṃ prāpya satvaram) — quickly reaching the Sudharmā [assembly hall],गर्वादखर्वमौलिर्हि (garvādakharvamaulirhi) — with head unbowed in pride,देवेन्द्रं वाक्यमब्रवीत् (devendraṃ vākyamabravīt) — spoke this word to the lord of the gods"

"— I am that hero's messenger, named Ghasmara, though no glutton; sent by that hero, I have come here into your presence.
Noteघस्मराख्यो न घस्मरः is a deliberate wordplay in the source: Ghasmara is the messenger's proper name, but घस्मर is also the ordinary word for "glutton/devourer" — he asserts that, despite his name, he is not one. Preserved literally rather than smoothed away.
दूतोऽहं तस्य वीरस्य (dūto'haṃ tasya vīrasya) — "— I am that hero's messenger,घस्मराख्यो न घस्मरः (ghasmarākhyo na ghasmaraḥ) — named Ghasmara, though no glutton;प्रेषितस्तेन वीरेण (preṣitastena vīreṇa) — sent by that hero,त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः (tvatsakāśamihāgataḥ) — I have come here into your presence"

उचितं न कृतं तेऽद्य (ucitaṃ na kṛtaṃ te'dya) — "you have not acted rightly; nowतानि शीघ्रं प्रयच्छ मे (tāni śīghraṃ prayaccha me) — give those jewels back to me at once;ममायाहि विचार्येत्थं (mamāyāhi vicāryetthaṃ) — consider this, and come to my refuge,शरणं दैवतैः सह (śaraṇaṃ daivataiḥ saha) — together with all the gods"

[Sanatkumāra said:] Having heard the messenger's words, the lord of the gods was astonished; remembering [the past], Indra, filled with fear and anger, spoke to him:

[Indra said:] "— because the mountains, terrified of me, were sheltered by him within his own depths, and other sons of Diti too, my enemies, were formerly given refuge by him.
NoteNo separate speaker-tag is printed before this verse, but the preceding verse's उवाच तं...इन्द्रः establishes that verses 31-35 are Indra's direct reply to the messenger; the speaker label here is supplied on that basis, unlike the other speaker changes in this chapter, which carry an explicit उवाच line.
अद्रयो मद्भयात् त्रस्ताः (adrayo madbhayāt trastāḥ) — "[the ocean is my enemy] since mountains, terrified of me,स्वकुक्षिस्था यतः कृताः (svakukṣisthā yataḥ kṛtāḥ) — were given shelter within his own depths by him;अन्येऽपि मद् द्विषस्तेन (anye'pi mad dviṣastena) — and other sons of Diti too, my foes,रक्षिता दितिजाः पुरा (rakṣitā ditijāḥ purā) — were formerly protected by him"

Thus too, formerly, the daitya Śaṅkha, another son of the ocean, hating me, grew foolish-minded and was cast out from the fellowship of the good.
