Continuing the Jālandhara-vadha sub-narrative, Vyāsa tells Sanatkumāra that he has heard this wondrous story of Śambhu and asks what happened when Śiva's own radiance, born of his third eye, was cast into the salt ocean. Sanatkumāra begins: that fiery energy of Śiva, born of his forehead-eye and cast into the briny ocean, instantly became an infant, who, lying at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the ocean, wept so loudly and so terrifyingly that the earth shook again and again, heaven and Satyaloka were deafened by the sound, all the worlds were struck with fear, and the guardians of the quarters grew distraught; in short, the whole moving and unmoving universe was shaken by the child's crying. The bewildered gods and sages hastened to Brahmā, the grandsire and guru of the worlds, and, having bowed and praised him, told him of the sudden terror that had come upon them and begged him, as the great yogin, to destroy it. Astonished at this news, Brahmā resolved to go and see for himself, descended with the gods from Satyaloka, and went to the ocean to learn what this was. As soon as he arrived there, he beheld the child in the ocean's lap; the ocean, recognising Brahmā in his divine form, bowed his head and placed the child in Brahmā's own lap. Brahmā, amazed, asked the ocean at once whose extraordinary child this was. The ocean, delighted at Brahmā's question, bowed, praised him, and, with joined palms, replied that he himself had unknowingly received this boy at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the sea, and begged the world-guru to perform the boy's birth-rites and declare all that his horoscope portended. But even as the ocean spoke, the child seized Brahmā by the throat and shook him again and again; overpowered by that shaking, tears ran from Brahmā's eyes, and only with difficulty did he free his throat from the mighty ocean-born infant's hands, after which he addressed the ocean with respect. Brahmā declared that, having reflected on it, he would now tell the ocean the full portent of his son's horoscope: because this child had made water flow from Brahmā's own eyes by his grip, he would be known by the name Jalandhara ("water-bearer"); he was even now, in his very infancy, a youth learned in every scripture, mighty in valour, resolute, a warrior fierce in battle, and would become as grave in war as Guha (Kārttikeya), the conqueror of all in battle and resplendent with every fortune; he would be the overlord of all the demons and would even conquer Viṣṇu, suffering defeat from none, and would be unslayable by any being save Rudra alone, to whom in the end he would return, since it was from Rudra's own energy that he had arisen; and his wife would be a devoted, fortune-increasing woman, lovely in every limb, charming, sweet of speech, and an ocean of good character. Having said this, Brahmā summoned Śukra, had the boy consecrated to sovereignty, took leave of the lord of rivers, and vanished. The ocean, his eyes wide with joy at the sight, joyfully took his son home and, delighted at heart, nurtured by every excellent means his all-limbed, lovely, and wondrously radiant child. The ocean then summoned the great demon Kālanemi and asked for his daughter Vṛndā in marriage for his son; the wise and valiant Kālanemi, foremost among the demons and skilled in his own duties, welcomed the ocean's request and, according to the Brāhma rite of marriage, gave his own dear daughter to the valiant, ocean-born Jalandhara. There was a great celebration at their wedding, and all the rivers, streams, and demons rejoiced; the ocean himself was exceedingly delighted to see his son together with his wife, and gave gifts as prescribed to brāhmaṇas and others. The demons who had earlier been conquered by the gods and had dwelt in the netherworld now came up to the surface of the earth and, fearless, took refuge with Jalandhara; Kālanemi and the other demons, having given their daughter to the ocean's son, became exceedingly joyful and took refuge with him for the sake of conquering the gods. And that valiant son of the ocean, named Jalandhara, foremost hero among the demon-heroes, having won an exceedingly beautiful wife and having mastered his senses, ruled his kingdom by the power of his preceptor, the sage Śukra.

"When your own radiance, born of your forehead-eye, was cast into the salt ocean, O father, what happened there? Tell me that at once."
NoteSanatkumāra, as one of the four mind-born sons of Brahmā, is here addressed by Vyāsa with तात and ब्रह्मन् (vocatives of filial and reverential address), and the "own radiance" (स्वतेजसि) refers to Śiva's energy from the earlier chapters of this sub-narrative, not to Sanatkumāra's own; the verse's "ब्रह्मन्" is a title of address to the learned Sanatkumāra, not a claim that he is Brahmā.

NoteThe vocatives तात, विभो, and विप्रेन्द्र here (and elsewhere in this chapter) are Sanatkumāra's forms of address to Vyāsa, his narratee within the frame story, not names of new characters.

[Sanatkumāra said:] While the ocean was speaking thus, that child, the ocean's own, seized Brahmā by the throat, shaking him again and again.

"By this shaking, Brahmā, the maker of all the worlds, thus afflicted, O Vyāsa — water came from his two eyes."
Noteकालेय, a rare vocative here, is taken as addressing Vyāsa — the narratee to whom Sanatkumāra tells this whole story. The word's precise derivation is not certain from the Sanskrit alone; the rendering follows the traditional gloss ("O Vyāsa") rather than an assumption.
विधूननं च तस्यैवं (vidhūnanaṃ ca tasyaivaṃ) — "by this shaking of him,सर्वलोककृतो विधेः (sarvalokakṛto vidheḥ) — of Brahmā, the maker of all the worlds,पीडितस्य च कालेय (pīḍitasya ca kāleya) — thus afflicted, O Vyāsa,नेत्राभ्यामगमज्जलम् (netrābhyāmagamajjalam) — water came from his two eyes"

"And he will become as grave in war as you, [or] as Guha [Kārttikeya], the conqueror of all in battle, resplendent with every fortune."
NoteThe comparison त्वं यथा समरे गुहः ("as you [are], as Guha [is], in battle") is addressed by Brahmā to the ocean (सागर), likening the future Jālandhara's gravity in war to both the ocean's own depth/steadiness and to Guha (Kārttikeya), the war-god — a double comparison, not treating गुहः as an unrelated or uncertain figure.
भविष्यति च गम्भीरः (bhaviṣyati ca gambhīraḥ) — "and he will become as graveत्वं यथा समरे गुहः (tvaṃ yathā samare guhaḥ) — in battle as you, [or] as Guha [is];सर्वजेता च सङ्ग्रामे (sarvajetā ca saṅgrāme) — and the conqueror of all in battle,सर्वसम्पद्विराजितः (sarvasampadvirājitaḥ) — resplendent with every fortune"
