Chapter Thirteen · Within the Jālandhara-vadha Sub-narrative: The Revival of Śakra · Verses 1–52

Vyāsa tells Sanatkumāra that he had earlier heard only in brief that Lord Śaṅkara slew the great demon Jālandhara, and asks him now to relate that story in full detail — for who could ever be satisfied merely hearing of Śiva's spotless fame? Sūta reports that, thus questioned by Vyāsa, the eloquent Sanatkumāra began to speak. Sanatkumāra opens the new tale: once, Bṛhaspati (the guru of the gods, called Jīva) and Indra (Śakra), moved by supreme devotion, set out eagerly for Kailāsa to have Śaṅkara's darśana. Learning of their coming, Śaṅkara, wishing to test the knowledge of these two whose hearts were set on seeing him, took the form of a naked ascetic (digambara) with matted locks and a radiant face, and stood blocking their path. As the guru and Śakra journeyed on joyfully, they beheld in the middle of the road this fearsome, wondrous figure — immensely radiant, calm, matted-locked, mighty-armed, broad-chested, fair, with fierce eyes. Indra, intoxicated with pride in his own sovereignty, failing to recognize that this person standing in his path was Śaṅkara himself, questioned him: who he was, whence he had come, what his name truly was, and whether Śambhu was in his own abode or had gone elsewhere. Asked thus, the silent ascetic said nothing; asked again by Śakra, the digambara again said nothing; asked a third time by the lord of the worlds, the great yogī, wearing his form in sport, remained silent still — the lord saying nothing at all, precisely in order to test Śakra's discernment. Then the lord of the gods, swollen with pride in his dominion over the three worlds, grew furious and, rebuking the matted-locked figure, threatened to slay him with the vajra, since he had given no answer. So saying, the wielder of the vajra glared at him in anger and raised the vajra to strike; but seeing Purandara with the vajra in hand, the god Sadāśiva himself brought that vajra-stroke to a standstill, freezing it in mid-air. Rudra, overcome with fury, his eyes terrible, blazed at once with his own radiance as though he would consume everything; and Indra, his arm held frozen by that same power, burned inwardly with wrath, like a serpent whose strength is checked and bound by a mantra. Seeing that being blazing swiftly with his own radiance, and recognizing him with his intellect to be none other than Hara, Bṛhaspati bowed down; folding his hands and prostrating flat upon the ground, the noble-minded guru began to praise the lord. In his hymn, Bṛhaspati salutes Śiva under many names and aspects — as god of gods, great god, the self, Maheśvara, three-eyed, matted-locked; as lord of the humble, slayer of Andhaka, destroyer of Tripura, Śarva, Brahman, the one seated at the summit; as of crooked eye, Rudra, of many forms, Śambhu, formless and yet possessing supreme form, beyond form; as destroyer and yet bestower of the fruits of sacrifice, embodiment of the sacrifice itself; as ender of time, time itself, bearer of the serpent of time, present everywhere; as slayer of Brahmā's head, praised by the moon born of Brahmā, friend of brahmins, the supreme self; declaring him to be fire, wind, sky, water, earth, sun, moon, stars, and the very wheel of light; to be Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the sages headed by Sanaka, Nārada; the lord and soul of all the worlds, connected with all yet distinct from all, beyond material nature; the one who through rajas creates the worlds as Brahmā, who through sattva as Hari sustains the whole world, and who through tamas as Hara withdraws in play the entire fivefold-elemental universe; declaring that by the power of meditating on him the sun burns, nectar flows in the world, the moon shines, the wind blows, the clouds pour rain, and Indra himself protects the three worlds as though they were his own child; that the clouds, all the gods, and the lords of sages, in fear of him, carry out their own offices only through the power of meditating on him; and that through service of his lotus feet, men on this earth cease to honour other gods and enjoy the lordship of the worlds, attaining even that supreme and most difficult state unreachable by those rich in yoga. Having thus praised world-benefiting Śaṅkara, Bṛhaspati made Purandara fall at the lord's feet; and, with Indra's head bowed low before Śiva, the guru, bowing in humility, spoke to him — begging Mahādeva, the lord of the helpless, to lift up the Indra who lay prostrate at his feet and to calm the wrath born in his eye, to be satisfied and protect the refuge-seeking Indra, and to let the fire that had arisen from his forehead-eye subside. Hearing the guru's words, Maheśvara, an ocean of compassion, replied in a voice deep as thunderclouds: that he was restraining the anger that had issued from his eye, but asked how a serpent could ever take back the slough it has once cast off. Hearing this, Bṛhaspati, his form distressed and his mind troubled with fear, pleaded again: that a god should always show compassion to his devotees, and that Śaṅkara should make true his very name of "one who is affectionate to his devotees" by casting his fierce radiance elsewhere and delivering Purandara, as the deliverer of all devotees that he is. Thus entreated by the guru, Rudra, who indeed bears the name "affectionate to devotees," pleased in spirit, replied to Bṛhaspati, the remover of the suffering of those who bow to him: pleased by this praise, he granted an excellent boon — that by this very gift of life to Indra, Bṛhaspati himself should henceforth go by the fame of "Jīva" ("the life-giver" or "the living one"); and that the fire which had arisen from his forehead-eye, the slayer of the lord of the gods, he would now cast far away so that it would never again afflict Indra. So saying, Śaṅkara took that wondrous fire of his own radiance, born from his forehead-eye, into his hand and cast it into the salt ocean. Then Rudra, the great and playful lord, vanished from sight; and the guru and Śakra, freed from their fear, departed in the greatest happiness. Having thus obtained the very darśana of Śiva for whose sake they had set out, the guru and Śakra, their purpose fulfilled, joyfully returned to their own abode — and with this episode the great sub-narrative of the destruction of the demon Jālandhara has now begun.

Noteजीव here is an epithet of Bṛhaspati, the preceptor of the gods (confirmed by verse 5's "गुर्विन्द्रयोः", "of the guru and Indra"). It is not a separate, unnamed figure.
