Sanatkumāra resumes his narration: meanwhile, seeing Śambhu pleased, the demon architect Maya — spared from the burning by the power of Śiva's grace — came before him greatly delighted, bowed to Hara and the other gods, and, rising, praised Śiva with his voice choked with love. In his hymn Maya hails Śiva as god of gods, cherisher of devotees, of the very nature of the wish-fulfilling tree and free of all partiality; he offers homage to Śiva as of the form of light, as the universe itself, as the pure-souled purifier, of wondrous and divine form, beyond form, as creator, sustainer, and destroyer of the three worlds, attainable through devotion, beloved of Śivā and giver of the true fruit of austerity — and, confessing that he does not know how to praise properly, begs Śiva to be pleased and to protect him as one who has come for refuge. Pleased with this hymn, the supreme lord bids Maya, best of demons, ask for a boon, promising to grant whatever his heart desires. Maya, bowing with joined palms, asks not for wealth or power but for Śiva's own eternal devotion — for constant friendship toward Śiva's devotees, compassion toward the wretched, indifference toward other wicked beings, and, above all, that a demonic nature never again arise in him, that he remain ever fearless and absorbed in Śiva's worship. Śiva, addressing Maya as his devotee now free of all such deviant nature, declares that all the boons he desires have already been granted, and commands him to go, together with his own family, to the delightful world of Vitala — more pleasant even than heaven — and to dwell there fearlessly, joyfully, and devoted, assured that by Śiva's own command a demonic nature will never arise in him again. Maya, receiving this command with utmost reverence and bowing to Śiva and the gods, departs for Vitala. Meanwhile, the shaven ascetics (muṇḍins) who had deluded Tripura also come before the gods headed by Viṣṇu and Brahmā and, bowing, ask anxiously where they should go and what they should now do, confessing that they have committed the evil deed of destroying the Śiva-devotion of Śiva-devoted demons, and that this ought by rights to condemn them to countless kalpas in hell with no deliverance for those who oppose Śiva's devotees — yet pleading that they acted only at the gods' own wish, and begging to be told how this may be atoned, since they have come for refuge. Hearing this, the gods headed by Viṣṇu and Brahmā reassure the muṇḍins that they need never fear, since their entire deed was done at Śiva's own command; that no sorrow-bringing evil fate can ever befall them, since they are Śiva's own servants and have acted for the good of gods and sages, and Śiva himself loves those who serve gods and sages so that such benefactors never meet an evil end — while, on the contrary, it is those men who take up this deluding doctrine themselves in the Kali age who will meet an evil fate. The gods instruct the muṇḍins to dwell steadfastly and secretly in the desert until the Kali age arrives, at which time they may establish their own doctrine, for in that degenerate age deluded and foolish people will indeed accept it. Thus commanded, the muṇḍins bow and depart to their own hermitage as directed. Rudra, his purpose now accomplished, having burnt the inhabitants of Tripura, is honored by Brahmā and the other gods; then, together with all his hosts, the goddess Śivā, and his son, having completed this great task for the gods, he vanishes from sight — and with his disappearance the bow, arrows, chariot, and the very rampart of Tripura vanish as well. Thereupon Brahmā, Hari, the gods, sages, gandharvas, kinnaras, nāgas, serpents, apsarases, and men, all filled with joy, proclaiming Śaṅkara's glory, return each to his own abode and there attain the highest bliss. Sanatkumāra concludes by declaring that he has now related this whole great deed of the moon-crested Śiva, which proclaims the destruction of Tripura and is full of his supreme play — an account that is blessed, glory-bringing, life-giving, wealth-increasing, and a bestower of both heaven and liberation — and asks what more Vyāsa wishes to hear, adding that whoever always reads or hears this supreme account enjoys every desire in this life and attains liberation at the end.

[Sanatkumāra said:] "Having received this command of the great-souled Śaṅkara with utmost respect, and having bowed to him and to the gods as well, he set out for Vitala."

[The muṇḍins said:] "Where shall we go, O gods? What deed shall we now do? Command us quickly — we who act at your bidding."
NoteNo explicit speaker tag ("मुण्डिन ऊचुः") is printed before this verse — the direct speech is signalled only by the narration in verse 21 ("प्रणम्योचुश्च..."). The speaker label here follows the singular "मुण्ड्युवाच" precedent set for Arihan-as-muṇḍī in chapter 4 of this khaṇḍa, pluralized for this group of muṇḍins, and is an editorial addition for clarity rather than a heading present in the text itself.

[Sanatkumāra said:] "Thus commanded by the lords of the gods, O best of sages, those muṇḍins, having bowed, went to their own hermitage as they had been directed."
NoteNo explicit speaker tag is printed before this verse; the narration resumes from the gods' direct speech (which ends at verse 32) back to Sanatkumāra addressing Vyāsa, signalled by the vocative "मुनीश्वर" (which only Sanatkumāra, narrating to Vyāsa, would use). The speaker label here is an editorial addition for clarity, consistent with the frame narration established at the chapter's opening and resumed at verses 10, 12, 16, 20, and 26.
