Brahmā continues: his mind-born sons name the wondrous being Manmatha, Kāma, and Kandarpa, and Dakṣa gives him Sandhyā as his intended wife. Eager to test his own power, Kāma strings his flower-bow before Brahmā and the assembled sages and bewilders them all — Brahmā, his sons, and Sandhyā herself — with desire. Seeing his father and brothers overcome, Dharma prays to Śiva, who appears and sharply shames Brahmā for desiring his own daughter. Mortified, Brahmā restrains himself and lets Sandhyā go; the sweat of his shame, and of Dakṣa's, gives rise to the many classes of pitṛs, and, from Dakṣa, to the maiden Rati, Kāma's future wife. Enraged at Kāma, Brahmā curses him to be burnt to ashes by Śiva's own eye. Kāma, terrified, protests that he only did the very work Brahmā himself had assigned him, and is innocent of any other wrong. Brahmā relents, explaining that the curse was provoked only by Kāma's targeting of his own daughter, and grants that Kāma will regain a body when Śiva himself eventually takes a wife.

Then Madana, having bewildered all of them again and again, made them undergo whatever disturbance of the senses was possible.

Was it not you who declared what my task was? That very task have I performed, Brahman; there is no fitness in cursing me, since I have done nothing else.
