Sūta tells the Naimiṣāraṇya sages that Nārada, still unsatisfied, asked Brahmā at greater length for the whole story of Satī and Śiva. Brahmā tells how Sadāśiva, once without qualities, form, or power, pure consciousness beyond being and non-being, became threefold — Viṣṇu from his left side, Brahmā from his right, Rudra from his heart. Brahmā, having created the prajāpatis and grown proud of it, brought forth his mind-born sons — Marīci, Atri and the rest — and, alongside them, the lovely Sandhyā, at whose sight Brahmā and his sons alike were seized with longing. Then a wondrous being, born of Brahmā's own mind and described at length — golden-haired, four-armed with the five flower-arrows, riding a makara, bearing a fish banner — appeared and, bowing to Brahmā, asked for a task, a station, and a wife. Brahmā, recovering from his astonishment, assigned him — as Kāmadeva, the god of desire — the eternal work of entering every creature's heart and bewildering all beings, men and women alike, with his flower-arrows to keep creation ever renewing itself, declaring that even Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva would themselves be subject to him.
