Chapter One·The Brief Account of Satī's Life·Verses 1–46
Nārada, praising Brahmā's knowledge, asks him to tell the tale of Rudra's own incarnation, his marriage, and how Satī died and was reborn as Pārvatī. Sūta notes that Brahmā, pleased, replied. Brahmā tells, in brief: his own past infatuation with his daughter Sandhyā and Rudra's rebuke of it; his jealous scheming against Śiva afterwards, which even Viṣṇu's counsel could not end; his causing, through Śakti, his son Dakṣa's wife Asiknī to bear a daughter — Somā, or Umā — who wins Rudra as her husband through hard tapas; Dakṣa's later rivalry with and contempt for Śiva, itself worked by Śiva's own māyā; Dakṣa's sacrifice, to which Rudra, and pointedly his own daughter Satī, are not invited; Satī's uninvited attendance, her disgrace before the assembly, and her giving up her body in anger; Rudra's unbearable rage, the birth of Vīrabhadra from his own plucked-out jaṭā, and the destruction of the sacrifice and beheading of Dakṣa; the gods' lament that no happiness is possible while Rudra is angered, their praise, Rudra's relenting, Dakṣa's revival, and the sacrifice redone with Rudra specially honoured; the flame born of Satī's body becoming the goddess Jvālāmukhī, worshipped still; and finally Satī's rebirth as Pārvatī, daughter of Himālaya, who through hard tapas of her own wins Śiva again as her husband. This chapter opens the Satī-khaṇḍa of the Rudra Saṃhitā.

The flame that arose from Satī's body, bringing happiness to the world, fell upon a mountain there, and, worshipped, bestows joy.
