Chapter Four · Kārtikeya's Search and the Dialogue with Nandi · Verses 1–67

Nārada asks Brahmā to continue the tale of Śiva's sport. Brahmā relates that after the Kṛttikās had taken Śambhu's son away, some time passed before Pārvatī, smiling, asked her lord where his seed had gone and whether some child had been born of it, since his seed could never be spent in vain. Śiva laughingly summoned the gods and sages and demanded to know who had hidden his seed, declaring that whoever concealed it should be branded a liar and outcast in Bhārata, unfit to serve or worship him, and warning that a king who fails to punish becomes a devourer of his own people. Terrified, the gods, Viṣṇu, the World-Guardians, and finally the wives of the gods each pronounced a curse upon whoever was guilty. Śiva then declared that although no single god had hidden it, the seed was assuredly hidden, and challenged Dharma and the other witnesses of all deeds to speak. Then, one after another, Earth, Fire, the Mountain, and Gaṅgā confessed how each, unable to bear the seed's power, had passed it on to the next — from Earth to Fire, from Fire to Kailāsa, from the Mountain to the Gaṅgā, and from the Gaṅgā into the forest of reeds — where Vāyu related that it became a radiant child on the bank of the heavenly river. Sūrya, Candra, Jala, Sandhyā, Rātri, and Dinam each added a piece of the story: how the Kṛttikās found the crying infant, nursed and named him Kārttika, never let him from their sight, and lavished on him the finest garments, ornaments, and food. Pleased, Śiva and Pārvatī, together with Lakṣmī, Sarasvatī, Menā, Sāvitrī, Viṣṇu, and all the gods, rewarded the brāhmaṇas with abundant wealth; and Śiva then sent a host of his gaṇas — Vīrabhadra, Nandīśvara, Mahākāla, and countless others — to summon his son. When this great army surrounded the Kṛttikās' dwelling, the terrified mothers turned to the fearless child, who reassured them that nothing could restrain him. Their commander, Nandikeśvara, then sat before Kārtikeya and, addressing him as brother, related the whole secret history of his birth as heard from the divine witnesses at the joyous assembly on Kailāsa — how Śiva's seed, born of his hidden sport with Pārvatī, passed from Earth to Fire to the Mountain to the Gaṅgā to the forest of reeds, and there became the child later found and raised by the Kṛttikās — declaring that Kārtikeya was in truth the son of the world's destroyer, dear to all yet contained by none, the all-pervading Viṣṇu himself, the untouched lord of yogis, whom those who fail to recognize him are as senseless as frogs indifferent to the lotus beside them. Kārtikeya replied with reverence, praising Nandikeśvara's all-knowing wisdom and explaining that the Kṛttikās, themselves wise yoginīs and portions of Prakṛti, were his foster mothers by their nurturing milk, even as he was born of Prakṛti's own Lord; and that though he was not born of Pārvatī, the mountain-king's daughter, she was nonetheless his mother by righteousness, just as the Kṛttikās were by universal consent. Acknowledging that Nandikeśvara had been sent by Śambhu himself and was as dear as Śambhu's own son, Kārtikeya agreed to accompany him to see the assembly of the gods, and, having reassured the Kṛttikās, set out at once together with Śiva's attendants.
