Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: a wondrous hundred-wheeled chariot, sent by Pārvatī, appeared before Kārtikeya, who mounted it with a heavy heart; the Kṛttikās, distraught at his leaving, embraced him in grief until he consoled them with words of spiritual wisdom, and all rode together toward Kailāsa, where Kārtikeya, delighted, remained for a time amid manifold sports. Word of his coming reached the gods, sages, and Śiva himself, who set out overjoyed with Viṣṇu, Brahmā and the divine sages amid conches, drums, and Vīrabhadra's gaṇas dancing and singing his praises; Pārvatī adorned the royal road and city with jewels, and thirty goddesses headed by Lakṣmī, along with the apsarases led by Rambhā, came forth to greet him, while all who beheld his radiance bowed down, and Brahmā himself, with Viṣṇu, Indra, and the other gods, fell prostrate before the child. Śiva and Pārvatī, overjoyed, arrived at the great festival; Skanda dismounted and bowed to them, and Śiva embraced and kissed him while Pārvatī, overcome with tenderness, gave him her breast; the gods honoured him with the lamp-waving rite amid great shouts of victory, and the sages, singers, and musicians thronged about him. Maheśa seated the radiant child upon his own lap and, along with Pārvatī, was overcome with such joy that he could say nothing at all; Kārtikeya then went with his gaṇas to Śiva's abode, where the divine couple shone together, and the boy played in Śiva's lap, even seizing and squeezing the serpent Vāsuki around Śiva's neck, which made Śiva laugh and remark on the sport to Girijā. Śiva then seated Kārttika on a jewelled throne, and the gods bathed him with the waters of every sacred ford poured from hundreds of jewelled vessels; thereupon each god bestowed upon him a divine gift — Viṣṇu his crown, armlets, garland Vaijayantī, and discus; Śiva his trident, Pināka bow, axe, Śakti, Pāśupata arrow, and the astra of destruction along with supreme knowledge; Brahmā the sacred thread, the Vedas and their mother, the kamaṇḍalu, the Brahmā-weapon, and a foe-crushing knowledge; Indra his elephant and thunderbolt; Varuṇa his umbrella, garland, and noose; Sūrya his mind-swift chariot and armour; Yama his staff; the Moon a pot of nectar; Agni the great Śakti; Nirṛti and Vāyu their own weapons; Kubera a mace; Kāmadeva his astra of desire along with a mace and his sciences; the Ocean of Milk priceless jewels and an anklet; Himālaya divine ornaments and garments; Garuḍa his son Citrabarhaṇa the peacock and Aruṇa his son Tāmracūḍa the cock; Pārvatī sovereignty and long life; Lakṣmī wealth and a necklace; Sāvitrī all accomplished knowledge; and the other goddesses and nursemaids gifts as to their own child — so that a very great festival of universal joy arose, delighting Śiva and Pārvatī above all. Then Rudra, laughing, told Brahmā and the gods that Tāraka would be slain by this very child, and, well pleased, granted whatever boon they wished; the gods, rejoicing, asked that Kārtikeya be given leave at once to kill Tāraka, and Śiva, moved by compassion, consented and gave his son to them for that purpose. Led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu, with Guha at their head, all the gods then departed from Kailāsa; outside it, by Viṣṇu's command, Tvaṣṭṛ fashioned a wondrous city near the mountain, with a splendid mansion and throne for Guha, where Viṣṇu devoutly had Kārtikeya consecrated with the waters of every sacred ford, seated him amid the assembly with full honours, bestowed on him sovereignty over the whole universe, marked him with the tilaka, and worshipped him together with the other gods; bowing to him with all the divine sages, he praised that eternal form of Śiva with many hymns — and thus Kārtikeya, seated upon the excellent throne, shone in the fullness of his lordship as the very protector of the universe.
