Chapter Three · Kārtikeya's Boyhood Sports · Verses 1–40

Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: at that time the mighty sage Viśvāmitra, urged by fate, came upon Śiva's radiant son and, overwhelmed with joy, bowed and praised him. The child, delighted, asked Viśvāmitra to perform his saṃskāra rites according to the Vedas and to become his family priest, promising he would ever be honoured by all. Viśvāmitra, astonished, revealed that he was in truth no brāhmaṇa but a kṣatriya, the son of Gādhi, and asked in turn who the child was. The child answered that by his own boon Viśvāmitra was thereby made a brahmarṣi, worthy even of the praise of Vasiṣṭha and the other great sages, and bade him perform the rite under strict secrecy. Viśvāmitra then duly performed the whole Vedic saṃskāra for Śiva's child, who in turn granted him supreme divine knowledge and made him his own purohita — from which time Viśvāmitra became skilled in manifold divine sports. Brahmā then tells another such sport: Agni, in his form as Śveta, came upon his own divine son, embraced and kissed him, and gave him the weapon called Śakti. Taking up the Śakti, Guha climbed onto the peak of Mount Krauñca and struck it down, destroying with that single blow ten padmas of rākṣasa warriors who had come against him. A great cry of woe arose, the earth and the three worlds trembled, and Indra came with the gods; striking the fallen foe again and again with his thunderbolt, Indra caused three more mighty heroes — Śākha, Viśākha, and Naigama — to spring forth from the blows. These four, headed by Skanda, then rushed to slay Indra himself, who fled in terror with the hosts of heaven back to his own realm, having failed to grasp what had truly happened. The child himself remained there in joy and fearlessness, continuing his manifold sports. Then the six Kṛttikās, coming to bathe, saw the radiant child and each wished to claim him for her own, until a dispute arose among them; to resolve it, he made himself six-faced and drank the milk of all six alike, satisfying every one of them, so that they joyfully carried him off together to their own world and raised him — dearer to each than her own life — giving him the rarest garments and ornaments of the three worlds and the choicest food every day. One day the child, now called the son of the Kṛttikās, went to the divine assembly of the gods and displayed his own most wondrous majesty to Viṣṇu and all the gods there; astonished beyond measure, they and the sages asked him who he was, but he said nothing at all, and swiftly returned home to live hidden as before.
