Chapter Two·The Birth of Śiva's Son on the Śaravaṇa·Verses 1–73
Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: hearing the plight of the gods, Mahādeva, skilled in the knowledge of yoga, did not abandon union with Pārvatī out of desire, yet out of fear for her he went to the door of the gods, who were being oppressed by the demon Tāraka. Seeing the Lord accompanied by Viṣṇu and Brahmā, the afflicted gods became greatly joyful and, prostrating with devotion, praised Śiva, begging him to protect them and destroy Tāraka and the other demons. Śiva replied that whatever is destined must come to pass and none can prevent it, and asked who would now receive his seed; saying "let him take it," he let it fall to the ground, and Agni, becoming a dove at the urging of all the gods, devoured the whole of it with his beak. Meanwhile Girijā arrived and, learning of the delay and all that had happened, grew enraged; she cursed the gods headed by Viṣṇu as selfish causers of others' suffering, declaring that because they had contrived, for their own ends, to destroy her union with her husband, she and all the gods' wives who opposed her would become barren and sorrowful. She then turned her fury upon Agni, the devourer of Śiva's seed, cursing him to become an all-devourer forever tormented, a fool ignorant of Śiva's true nature who had failed to do what was fitting. Having cursed them, Śivā went home displeased; there Śiva pacified her with great effort, and she bore another son, Gaṇeśa — a story Brahmā promises to tell in full later — before turning to the birth of Guha. Meanwhile the gods, who had partaken of the food offered into Agni's fire as the Veda enjoins, all became pregnant with that seed and, unable to bear its heat, fell into great distress; bewildered and burning, Viṣṇu and the rest fled to the door of Pārvatī's lord and praised him with joined hands, begging him to have mercy and relieve their condition. Śambhu, hearing their pitiful plea, smiled and commanded them all to vomit forth his seed at once; obeying, they did so, and it fell to the ground as a wondrous, mountain-like mass gleaming like gold, its brilliance touching the heavens, at which all the gods rejoiced — but Agni alone remained tormented, until, at Śiva's bidding, he too, with joined hands, praised the Lord, confessing his fault and begging relief. Śiva forgave him, explaining that his suffering had come by Śiva's own decree because of the gravity of his transgression, but that he was now pleased and all sorrow would vanish if Agni cast the seed into the womb of some virtuous woman. Agni protested that this radiance was unbearable and that none but Śakti herself could hold it in the three worlds; at this, prompted by Śiva, Nārada himself approached Agni with helpful counsel, telling him of a remedy: whichever women were bathing at dawn, keeping their vow, during the month of Tapas, into their bodies he should place the mighty seed of Śiva. Just then the wives of the seven sages came there to bathe; six of them, tormented by great cold, went to warm themselves at the fire, and though Arundhatī, by Śiva's ordinance, tried to stop them, they went regardless, deluded by Śiva's māyā, and particles of the seed at once entered their bodies through every pore, freeing Agni of his burning, so that he departed happily to his own world. The six women became pregnant and, tormented by the heat, returned home along with the sorrowful Arundhatī; but their husbands, seeing their condition, grew furious and, after taking counsel together, repudiated them. The six women, overwhelmed with sorrow at this false suspicion, abandoned that embryo-form of Śiva's seed on the slope of the Himālaya, where it lost its burning heat; the Himālaya, unable to bear it, trembling, cast it into the Gaṅgā, and the Gaṅgā in turn cast that unbearable radiance with her own waves into a thicket of reeds. There the fallen seed at once became a child — beautiful, glorious, and radiant — appearing on earth as Śiva's son on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of Mārgaśīrṣa. At that moment Himācala's daughter and Śiva himself, on their own mountain, suddenly and inexplicably rejoiced; from Śivā's breasts flowed milk born of bliss, and all who went there felt supreme happiness. Auspiciousness arose throughout the three worlds, delighting the virtuous and troubling the wicked and the demons; suddenly in the sky sounded the beat of celestial drums, a shower of flowers fell upon the child, and Viṣṇu and all the gods and sages were filled with supreme bliss and festivity.
