Chapter One·Śiva's Blissful Sojourn on Kailāsa and the Gods' Cry for Deliverance from Tāraka·Verses 1–63
This chapter opens the Kumāra-khaṇḍa with an invocatory verse to Śiva. Nārada asks Brahmā to narrate how Śaṅkara, after marrying Girijā, went to his own mountain; how a son was born to Śiva the Supreme Soul, for whose sake the ever-content Lord had married Śivā; and how the demon Tāraka was slain. Sūta reports that Brahmā, his mind well pleased, recalled Śiva and began to answer. Brahmā tells Nārada that he will narrate the divine story of Guha's birth and Tāraka's righteous slaying, a tale that destroys sin and grants every blessing. He recounts how Śiva, having come to Kailāsa and married Śivā, attained the height of splendour, even as he pondered the task the gods required of him and the suffering of the people that made it necessary. Amid great festivity at his coming, Śiva took Girijā to a secluded, divinely beautiful place, prepared a couch of love, and sported with her for a thousand years by the reckoning of the gods, each swooning at the other's touch, unaware of day or night, while a great span of time passed for them as though it were a moment. Meanwhile the gods, gathered on Meru under Indra, grew anxious on learning from Nārada how long Śiva's love-play had continued, since a son had still not been born to him; and, headed by Brahmā, they went to Nārāyaṇa, who consoled them, saying that everything set in motion by time reaches fruition only in its own time, and that Śambhu himself would cease of his own accord when a thousand years were complete. He warned that whoever forcibly severs a couple's union suffers separation from wife and child birth after birth, illustrating this with the fates of Indra and Rambhā, the Moon and Bṛhaspati's wife Tārā, the Moon and Mohinī checked by Gautama, and Hariścandra, contrasted with Ajāmila whom none of the gods dared restrain; for everything, he said, is accomplished through the seed of procreation, which none can obstruct. He instructed the gods to let the thousand years run their course, so that Śiva's seed might fall upon the earth and give rise to the son named Skanda, and told Brahmā and the gods to return home meanwhile. Viṣṇu accordingly departed, and Brahmā and the gods went to their own abodes. Thereafter, from the excessive dalliance of Śakti and the Possessor of Śakti, the earth trembled under its own weight upon Śeṣa and the Tortoise, the sustaining wind was checked, and the three worlds were thrown into terror; the gods, together with Brahmā, fled for refuge to Viṣṇu and told him all, dejected and afraid. Viṣṇu led them all to Kailāsa, where, remaining calm while the other gods panicked, he questioned Śiva's attendants; they explained that Mahādeva had gone within Girijā's abode many years before and none knew what he did there. Astonished, Viṣṇu, with Brahmā and the gods, approached Śiva's door and, in an anguished, high-pitched voice, praised Hara at length and begged him to protect the gods, tormented by Tāraka, who had come to him for refuge. Thus mingled cries of praise for Śiva and of anguish over the demon's oppression rose up in an uproar of sorrow among the celestials.
