विष्णुना न हि वध्योऽसौ (viṣṇunā na hi vadhyo'sau) — "this Tāraka cannot indeed be slain by Viṣṇu"this Tāraka cannot indeed be slain by Viṣṇu·तारको बलवानति (tārako balavānati) — exceedingly powerful as he isexceedingly powerful as he is·मया दत्तवरस्तस्मात् (mayā dattavarastasmāt) — for a boon has been given by me; thereforefor a boon has been given by me; therefore·सत्यं सत्यं वदाम्यहम् (satyaṃ satyaṃ vadāmyaham) — I speak the truth, the very truth"I speak the truth, the very truth"

सन्नद्धो भव दैत्यस्य (sannaddho bhava daityasya) — "be armed for the daitya's"be armed for the daitya's·वधायाशु परन्तप (vadhāyāśu parantapa) — swift slaying, O scorcher of foesswift slaying, O scorcher of foes·तद्वधार्थं समुत्पन्नः (tadvadhārthaṃ samutpannaḥ) — for that very purpose you were bornfor that very purpose you were born·शङ्करात्त्वं शिवासुत (śaṅkarāttvaṃ śivāsuta) — from Śaṅkara, O son of Śiva"from Śaṅkara, O son of Śiva"

रक्ष रक्ष महावीर (rakṣa rakṣa mahāvīra) — "protect, protect, O great hero"protect, protect, O great hero·त्रिदशान् व्यथितान् रणे (tridaśān vyathitān raṇe) — the gods, afflicted in battlethe gods, afflicted in battle·न बालस्त्वं युवा नैव (na bālastvaṃ yuvā naiva) — you are not a child, nor indeed a youthyou are not a child, nor indeed a youth·किं तु सर्वेश्वरः प्रभुः (kiṃ tu sarveśvaraḥ prabhuḥ) — but rather the lord and sovereign of all"but rather the lord and sovereign of all"

शक्रं पश्य तथा विष्णुं (śakraṃ paśya tathā viṣṇuṃ) — "see Śakra, and Viṣṇu too"see Śakra, and Viṣṇu too·व्याकुलं च सुरान् गणान् (vyākulaṃ ca surān gaṇān) — and the gods and gaṇas in distressand the gods and gaṇas in distress·एनं जहि महादैत्यं (enaṃ jahi mahādaityaṃ) — slay this great daityaslay this great daitya·त्रैलोक्यं सुखितं कुरु (trailokyaṃ sukhitaṃ kuru) — and make the three worlds happy"and make the three worlds happy"

अनेन विजितश्चेन्द्रो (anena vijitaścendro) — by him Indra was conqueredby him Indra was conquered·लोकपालैः पुरा सह (lokapālaiḥ purā saha) — together with the world-guardians, formerlytogether with the world-guardians, formerly·विष्णुश्चापि महावीरो (viṣṇuścāpi mahāvīro) — and Viṣṇu too, the great heroand Viṣṇu too, the great hero·तर्जितस्तपसो बलात् (tarjitastapaso balāt) — was humbled by the power of his austeritywas humbled by the power of his austerity

त्रैलोक्यं निर्जितं सर्वम् (trailokyaṃ nirjitaṃ sarvam) — the whole three worlds were conqueredthe whole three worlds were conquered·असुरेण दुरात्मना (asureṇa durātmanā) — by that wicked asuraby that wicked asura·इदानीं तव सान्निध्यात् (idānīṃ tava sānnidhyāt) — now, because of your presencenow, because of your presence·पुनर्युद्धं कृतं च तैः (punaryuddhaṃ kṛtaṃ ca taiḥ) — battle has again been waged by thembattle has again been waged by them

तस्मात्त्वया निहन्तव्यः (tasmāttvayā nihantavyaḥ) — "therefore he must be slain by you"therefore he must be slain by you·तारकः पापपूरुषः (tārakaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ) — Tāraka, that sinful beingTāraka, that sinful being·अन्यवध्यो न चैवायं (anyavadhyo na caivāyaṃ) — and he cannot be slain by anotherand he cannot be slain by another·मद्वराच्छङ्करात्मज (madvarācchaṅkarātmaja) — because of my boon, O son of Śaṅkara"because of my boon, O son of Śaṅkara"

इति श्रुत्वा मम वचः (iti śrutvā mama vacaḥ) — having heard these my wordshaving heard these my words·कुमारः शङ्करात्मजः (kumāraḥ śaṅkarātmajaḥ) — Kumāra, the son of ŚaṅkaraKumāra, the son of Śaṅkara·विजहास प्रसन्नात्मा (vijahāsa prasannātmā) — laughed, his mind well pleasedlaughed, his mind well pleased·तथास्त्विति वचोऽब्रवीत् (tathāstviti vaco'bravīt) — and spoke the word, "so be it"and spoke the word, "so be it"

दृष्ट्वा तमायान्तमतिप्रचण्डम् (dṛṣṭvā tamāyāntamatipracaṇḍam) — having seen him coming, exceedingly fiercehaving seen him coming, exceedingly fierce·अव्याकुलं षण्मुखमप्रमेयम् (avyākulaṃ ṣaṇmukhamaprameyam) — unperturbed, six-faced, immeasurableunperturbed, six-faced, immeasurable·दैत्यो बभाषे सुरसत्तमान्स (daityo babhāṣe surasattamānsa) — the daitya spoke to the best of the godsthe daitya spoke to the best of the gods·कुमार एष द्विषतां प्रहन्ता (kumāra eṣa dviṣatāṃ prahantā) — "this is the Kumāra, the slayer of foes""this is the Kumāra, the slayer of foes"

अनेन साकं ह्यहमेकवीरो (anena sākaṃ hyahamekavīro) — "with him alone, I, the sole hero,"with him alone, I, the sole hero,·योत्स्ये च सर्वानहमेव वीरान् (yotsye ca sarvānahameva vīrān) — shall fight; and I alone shall fight all the heroesshall fight; and I alone shall fight all the heroes·गणांश्च सर्वानपि घातयामि (gaṇāṃśca sarvānapi ghātayāmi) — I shall slay all the gaṇas tooI shall slay all the gaṇas too·सलोकपालान् हरिनायकांश्च (salokapālān harināyakāṃśca) — together with the world-guardians and the hosts led by Hari"together with the world-guardians and the hosts led by Hari"

इत्येवमुक्त्वा स तदा महाबलः (ityevamuktvā sa tadā mahābalaḥ) — having thus spoken, that mighty one thenhaving thus spoken, that mighty one then·कुमारमुद्दिश्य ययौ च योद्धुम् (kumāramuddiśya yayau ca yoddhum) — set out to fight, aiming himself at Kumāraset out to fight, aiming himself at Kumāra·जग्राह शक्तिं परमाद्भुतां च (jagrāha śaktiṃ paramādbhutāṃ ca) — he took up a most wondrous Śaktihe took up a most wondrous Śakti·स तारको देववरान् बभाषे (sa tārako devavarān babhāṣe) — and that Tāraka spoke to the best of the godsand that Tāraka spoke to the best of the gods

कुमारो मेऽग्रतश्चाद्य (kumāro me'grataścādya) — "how has the Kumāra, today, before me,"how has the Kumāra, today, before me,·भवद्भिश्च कथं कृतः (bhavadbhiśca kathaṃ kṛtaḥ) — been set up by you all?been set up by you all?·यूयं गतत्रपा देवा (yūyaṃ gatatrapā devā) — you gods have lost all shameyou gods have lost all shame·विशेषाच्छक्रकेशवौ (viśeṣācchakrakeśavau) — especially Śakra and Keśava"especially Śakra and Keśava"

पुरैताभ्यां कृतं कर्म (puraitābhyāṃ kṛtaṃ karma) — "the deeds formerly done by these two,"the deeds formerly done by these two,·विरुद्धं वेदमार्गतः (viruddhaṃ vedamārgataḥ) — contrary to the path of the Vedascontrary to the path of the Vedas·तच्छृणुध्वं मया प्रोक्तं (tacchṛṇudhvaṃ mayā proktaṃ) — hear that, as told by mehear that, as told by me·वर्णयामि विशेषतः (varṇayāmi viśeṣataḥ) — I shall describe it in detail"I shall describe it in detail"

तत्र विष्णुश्छली दोषी (tatra viṣṇuśchalī doṣī) — "among these, Viṣṇu is deceitful, guilty,"among these, Viṣṇu is deceitful, guilty,·ह्यविवेकी विशेषतः (hyavivekī viśeṣataḥ) — and especially devoid of discernmentand especially devoid of discernment·बलिर्येन पुरा बद्धः (baliryena purā baddhaḥ) — by whom Bali was formerly boundby whom Bali was formerly bound·छलमाश्रित्य पापतः (chalamāśritya pāpataḥ) — sinfully resorting to deceit"sinfully resorting to deceit"

तेनैव यत्नतः पूर्वम् (tenaiva yatnataḥ pūrvam) — "by him alone, formerly, by effort"by him alone, formerly, by effort·असुरौ मधुकैटभौ (asurau madhukaiṭabhau) — the two asuras Madhu and Kaiṭabhathe two asuras Madhu and Kaiṭabha·शिरोहीनौ कृतौ धौर्त्यात् (śirohīnau kṛtau dhaurtyāt) — were beheaded, through cunningwere beheaded, through cunning·वेदमार्गो विवर्जितः (vedamārgo vivarjitaḥ) — and the path of the Vedas was forsaken"and the path of the Vedas was forsaken"

मोहिनीरूपतोऽनेन (mohinīrūpato'nena) — "by him, through the form of Mohinī,"by him, through the form of Mohinī,·पङ्क्तिभेदः कृतो हि वै (paṅktibhedaḥ kṛto hi vai) — a splitting of the row was indeed madea splitting of the row was indeed made·देवासुरसुधापाने (devāsurasudhāpāne) — at the drinking of the nectar by gods and asurasat the drinking of the nectar by gods and asuras·वेदमार्गो विगर्हितः (vedamārgo vigarhitaḥ) — and the path of the Vedas was violated"and the path of the Vedas was violated"

रामो भूत्वा हता नारी (rāmo bhūtvā hatā nārī) — "having become Rāma, he killed the woman [Tāḍakā]"having become Rāma, he killed the woman [Tāḍakā]·वाली विध्वंसितो हि सः (vālī vidhvaṃsito hi saḥ) — and Vāli, too, was destroyed by himand Vāli, too, was destroyed by him·पुनर्वैश्रवणो विप्रो हतो (punarvaiśravaṇo vipro hato) — and again, the brahmin son of Viśravas was slainand again, the brahmin son of Viśravas was slain·नीतिर्हता श्रुतेः (nītirhatā śruteḥ) — thus the moral law taught by the Vedas was destroyed"thus the moral law taught by the Vedas was destroyed"

पापं विना स्वकीया स्त्री (pāpaṃ vinā svakīyā strī) — "his own wife, without fault,"his own wife, without fault,·त्यक्ता पापरतेन यत् (tyaktā pāparatena yat) — was abandoned by that one intent on sinwas abandoned by that one intent on sin·तत्रापि श्रुतिमार्गश्च (tatrāpi śrutimārgaśca) — there too, the path of the Vedic teachingthere too, the path of the Vedic teaching·ध्वंसितः स्वार्थहेतवे (dhvaṃsitaḥ svārthahetave) — was destroyed, for his own selfish end"was destroyed, for his own selfish end"

स्वजनन्याः शिरश्छिन्नम् (svajananyāḥ śiraśchinnam) — "his own mother's head was cut off"his own mother's head was cut off·अवतारे रसाख्यके (avatāre rasākhyake) — in the incarnation called Rasa [the sixth]in the incarnation called Rasa [the sixth]·गुरुपुत्रापमानश्च (guruputrāpamānaśca) — and the insulting of the guru's sonand the insulting of the guru's son·कृतोऽनेन दुरात्मना (kṛto'nena durātmanā) — was also done by this wicked one"was also done by this wicked one"

कृष्णो भूत्वान्यनार्यश्च (kṛṣṇo bhūtvānyanāryaśca) — "having become Kṛṣṇa, many women"having become Kṛṣṇa, many women·दूषिताः कुलधर्मतः (dūṣitāḥ kuladharmataḥ) — were defiled, against family-dharmawere defiled, against family-dharma·श्रुतिमार्गं परित्यज्य (śrutimārgaṃ parityajya) — abandoning the path of the Vedasabandoning the path of the Vedas·स्वविवाहाः कृतास्तथा (svavivāhāḥ kṛtāstathā) — and likewise marriages of his own were made"and likewise marriages of his own were made"

भ्राता ज्येष्ठश्च यस्तस्य (bhrātā jyeṣṭhaśca yastasya) — "and his elder brother, who is"and his elder brother, who is·शक्रः पापी महान्मतः (śakraḥ pāpī mahānmataḥ) — Śakra, considered a great sinner,Śakra, considered a great sinner,·तेन पापान्यनेकानि (tena pāpānyanekāni) — by him many sinsby him many sins·कृतानि निजहेतुतः (kṛtāni nijahetutaḥ) — have been committed, for his own sake"have been committed, for his own sake"

विश्वरूपद्विजातेर्वै (viśvarūpadvijātervai) — "of the brahmin Viśvarūpa indeed,"of the brahmin Viśvarūpa indeed,·भागिनेयस्य यद्गुरोः (bhāgineyasya yadguroḥ) — who was [the asuras'] nephew and also his guru,who was [the asuras'] nephew and also his guru,·निकृत्तानि च शीर्षाणि (nikṛttāni ca śīrṣāṇi) — the heads were cut offthe heads were cut off·तदध्वाध्वंसितः श्रुतेः (tadadhvādhvaṃsitaḥ śruteḥ) — and by that deed the path of the Vedas was destroyed"and by that deed the path of the Vedas was destroyed"

कृत्वा बहूनि पापानि (kṛtvā bahūni pāpāni) — "having committed many sins,"having committed many sins,·हरिः शक्रः पुनःपुनः (hariḥ śakraḥ punaḥpunaḥ) — Hari and Śakra, again and again,Hari and Śakra, again and again,·तेजोभिर्विहतावेव (tejobhirvihatāveva) — have indeed been stripped of their splendourhave indeed been stripped of their splendour·नष्टवीर्यौ विशेषतः (naṣṭavīryau viśeṣataḥ) — and are especially devoid of valour"and are especially devoid of valour"

तयोर्बलेन नो यूयं (tayorbalena no yūyaṃ) — "by their strength you will not"by their strength you will not·सङ्ग्रामे जयमाप्स्यथ (saṅgrāme jayamāpsyatha) — gain victory in this battlegain victory in this battle·किमर्थं मूढतां प्राप्य (kimarthaṃ mūḍhatāṃ prāpya) — why, having fallen into folly,why, having fallen into folly,·प्राणांस्त्यक्तुमिहागताः (prāṇāṃstyaktumihāgatāḥ) — have you come here to give up your lives?"have you come here to give up your lives?"

जानन्तौ धर्ममेतौ न (jānantau dharmametau na) — "these two do not know dharma,"these two do not know dharma,·स्वार्थलम्पटमानसौ (svārthalampaṭamānasau) — their minds greedy for their own gaintheir minds greedy for their own gain·धर्मं विनाऽमराः कृत्यं (dharmaṃ vinā'marāḥ kṛtyaṃ) — O immortals, without dharma any deedO immortals, without dharma any deed·निष्फलं सकलं भवेत् (niṣphalaṃ sakalaṃ bhavet) — becomes wholly fruitless"becomes wholly fruitless"

महाधृष्टाविमौ मेऽद्य (mahādhṛṣṭāvimau me'dya) — "these two, exceedingly insolent, have today,"these two, exceedingly insolent, have today,·कृतवन्तौ पुरश्शिशुम् (kṛtavantau puraśśiśum) — before me, set up a mere childbefore me, set up a mere child·अहं बालं वधिष्यामि (ahaṃ bālaṃ vadhiṣyāmi) — I shall slay this child,I shall slay this child,·तयोः सोऽपि भविष्यति (tayoḥ so'pi bhaviṣyati) — and that [sin] too shall be theirs"and that [sin] too shall be theirs"

इत्येवमुक्त्वा तु विधूय पुण्यं (ityevamuktvā tu vidhūya puṇyaṃ) — having thus spoken, and having shaken offhaving thus spoken, and having shaken off·निजं स तन्निन्दनकर्मणा वै (nijaṃ sa tannindanakarmaṇā vai) — his own merit, indeed, by that very act of revilinghis own merit, indeed, by that very act of reviling·जग्राह शक्तिं परमाद्भुतां च (jagrāha śaktiṃ paramādbhutāṃ ca) — he took up a most wondrous Śaktihe took up a most wondrous Śakti·स तारको युद्धवतां वरिष्ठः (sa tārako yuddhavatāṃ variṣṭhaḥ) — that Tāraka, foremost among warriorsthat Tāraka, foremost among warriors

एवं तिरस्कृतं दृष्ट्वा (evaṃ tiraskṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing him thus insulted,seeing him thus insulted,·शक्रं विष्णुः प्रतापवान् (śakraṃ viṣṇuḥ pratāpavān) — Śakra, the mighty Viṣṇu,Śakra, the mighty Viṣṇu,·चक्रमुद्यस्य भगवांस्तारकं (cakramudyasya bhagavāṃstārakaṃ) — raising his discus, that lord, [struck] Tārakaraising his discus, that lord, [struck] Tāraka·स जघान ह (sa jaghāna ha) — he struckhe struck

चक्रप्रहाराभिहतो (cakraprahārābhihato) — struck by the blow of the discus,struck by the blow of the discus,·निपपात क्षितौ हि सः (nipapāta kṣitau hi saḥ) — he indeed fell to the groundhe indeed fell to the ground·पुनरुत्थाय दैत्येन्द्रः (punarutthāya daityendraḥ) — rising up again, the lord of the daityasrising up again, the lord of the daityas·शक्त्या विष्णुं जघान तम् (śaktyā viṣṇuṃ jaghāna tam) — struck that Viṣṇu with his Śaktistruck that Viṣṇu with his Śakti

तेन शक्तिप्रहारेण (tena śaktiprahāreṇa) — by that blow of the Śaktiby that blow of the Śakti·पतितो भुवि चाच्युतः (patito bhuvi cācyutaḥ) — Acyuta [Viṣṇu] fell to the groundAcyuta [Viṣṇu] fell to the ground·हाहाकरो महानासीत् (hāhākaro mahānāsīt) — there was a great cry of woethere was a great cry of woe·चुक्रुशुश्चाऽतिनिर्जराः (cukruśuścā'tinirjarāḥ) — and the gods cried out greatlyand the gods cried out greatly

निमेषेण पुनर्विष्णुः (nimeṣeṇa punarviṣṇuḥ) — in a moment, Viṣṇu again,in a moment, Viṣṇu again,·यावदुत्तिष्ठते स्वयम् (yāvaduttiṣṭhate svayam) — even as he himself was rising up,even as he himself was rising up,·तावत्स वीरभद्रो हि (tāvatsa vīrabhadro hi) — at that very moment Vīrabhadra indeed,at that very moment Vīrabhadra indeed,·तत्क्षणादागतोऽसुरम् (tatkṣaṇādāgato'suram) — arrived instantly at [where] the asura [was]arrived instantly at [where] the asura [was]

त्रिशूलं च समुद्यम्य (triśūlaṃ ca samudyamya) — raising up his trident,raising up his trident,·वीरभद्रः प्रतापवान् (vīrabhadraḥ pratāpavān) — the mighty Vīrabhadrathe mighty Vīrabhadra·तारकं दितिजाधीशं (tārakaṃ ditijādhīśaṃ) — Tāraka, the lord of the sons of Diti,Tāraka, the lord of the sons of Diti,·जघान प्रसभं बली (jaghāna prasabhaṃ balī) — that strong one struck with forcethat strong one struck with force

कृत्वा क्रोधं महावीरः (kṛtvā krodhaṃ mahāvīraḥ) — having become enraged, that great hero,having become enraged, that great hero,·सकलासुरनायकः (sakalāsuranāyakaḥ) — the leader of all the asuras,the leader of all the asuras,·जघान परया शक्त्या (jaghāna parayā śaktyā) — struck with his supreme Śaktistruck with his supreme Śakti·वीरभद्रं तदोरसि (vīrabhadraṃ tadorasi) — Vīrabhadra, on his chest, thenVīrabhadra, on his chest, then

वीरभद्रोऽपि पतितो (vīrabhadro'pi patito) — Vīrabhadra too fellVīrabhadra too fell·भूतले मूर्छितः क्षणम् (bhūtale mūrchitaḥ kṣaṇam) — to the ground, fainting for a momentto the ground, fainting for a moment·तच्छक्त्या परया क्रोधात् (tacchaktyā parayā krodhāt) — by that supreme Śakti, hurled in anger,by that supreme Śakti, hurled in anger,·निहतो वक्षसि ध्रुवम् (nihato vakṣasi dhruvam) — struck surely on the cheststruck surely on the chest

सगणाश्चैव देवास्ते (sagaṇāścaiva devāste) — those gods, together with their gaṇas,those gods, together with their gaṇas,·गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसाः (gandharvoragarākṣasāḥ) — the gandharvas, the serpents, and the rākṣasas,the gandharvas, the serpents, and the rākṣasas,·हाहाकारेण महता (hāhākāreṇa mahatā) — with a great cry of woewith a great cry of woe·चुक्रुशुश्च मुहुर्मुहुः (cukruśuśca muhurmuhuḥ) — cried out again and againcried out again and again

निमेषमात्रात्सहसा महौजाः (nimeṣamātrātsahasā mahaujāḥ) — in a mere instant, suddenly, that one of great vigour,in a mere instant, suddenly, that one of great vigour,·स्स वीरभद्रो द्विषतां निहन्ता (ssa vīrabhadro dviṣatāṃ nihantā) — that Vīrabhadra, the slayer of foes,that Vīrabhadra, the slayer of foes,·त्रिशूलमुद्यम्य तडित्प्रकाशं (triśūlamudyamya taḍitprakāśaṃ) — raising up his trident, flashing like lightning,raising up his trident, flashing like lightning,·जाज्वल्यमानं प्रभया विरेजे (jājvalyamānaṃ prabhayā vireje) — blazing, he shone with splendourblazing, he shone with splendour

स्वरोचिषा भासितदिग्वितानं (svarociṣā bhāsitadigvitānaṃ) — [that trident,] illumining the canopy of the directions with its own radiance,[that trident,] illumining the canopy of the directions with its own radiance,·सूर्येन्दुबिम्बाग्निसमानमण्डलम् (sūryendubimbāgnisamānamaṇḍalam) — its circle of light equal to the orbs of the sun, moon, and fire,its circle of light equal to the orbs of the sun, moon, and fire,·महाप्रभं वीरभयावहं परं (mahāprabhaṃ vīrabhayāvahaṃ paraṃ) — of great splendour, bringing fear to heroes, supreme,of great splendour, bringing fear to heroes, supreme,·कालाख्यमत्यन्तकरं महोज्ज्वलम् (kālākhyamatyantakaraṃ mahojjvalam) — called "Kāla" [Death], all-ending, greatly blazingcalled "Kāla" [Death], all-ending, greatly blazing
