Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: he himself had once urged Kārtikeya (addressing him as Guha, son of Śaṅkara and Pārvatī) that the futile war between Viṣṇu and the invincible Tāraka — who, by Brahmā's own boon, could be slain by none but Śiva's son — must end, and pleaded with him to take up arms and protect the afflicted gods, reminding him that he was no child or youth but the very lord of all. Kārtikeya smilingly assented, descended from his chariot, and advanced on foot bearing his blazing Śakti; seeing the fearless, six-faced boy approach, Tāraka boasted to the gods that he alone would fight and destroy them all, and advanced to face him with his own wondrous Śakti. Before their duel could begin, Tāraka turned to revile Viṣṇu and Indra at length, cataloguing their past sins against the Vedic path — Viṣṇu's deceptions as Vāmana's betrayer of Bali, Mohinī, Rāma, Paraśurāma, Kṛṣṇa, and Buddha, and Indra's crimes against Diti's unborn child, Ahalyā, Vṛtra, and Viśvarūpa — declaring that such sinners could never defeat him, and that Kārtikeya, an innocent child dragged into their war, did not deserve to die for their sake; he then turned to Vīrabhadra, recalling his past slaughter of brāhmaṇas at Dakṣa's sacrifice and vowing to repay him in kind. Having thereby cast away what remained of his own merit through this very speech of reviling, Tāraka took up his wondrous Śakti and the battle resumed in earnest: Indra struck him down with the thunderbolt, only to be struck down and trampled in turn; Viṣṇu struck him with his discus and was struck back with the Śakti and felled; and just as Viṣṇu began to rise again, Vīrabhadra arrived and struck Tāraka down with his trident, but was himself struck by Tāraka's own supreme Śakti and fell stunned, amid the anguished cries of gods, gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas. Rising again in an instant, the blazing, hero-daunting Vīrabhadra lifted his lightning-bright trident, radiant as the sun, the moon, and fire, and terrible as Kāla, the ender of all things, to finish Tāraka once and for all — but at that very moment Kumāra himself restrained him from striking.

"Protect, O great hero, protect the gods afflicted in battle; you are not a child, nor indeed a youth, but rather the lord and sovereign of all."

Formerly, Indra, together with the guardians of the world, was conquered by him; and even the great hero Viṣṇu was humbled by the power of his austerity.

"Therefore, O son of Śaṅkara, that sinful being Tāraka must be slain by you; because of my boon, he cannot be slain by any other."

Having heard these my words, Kumāra, the son of Śaṅkara, laughed, well pleased in mind, and spoke the word, "So be it."

Having resolved on the slaying of the asura, he, the son of Śaṅkara, that great lord, then descended from his aerial chariot and became a foot-soldier.

Then, running about on his own feet, that most heroic Kumāra, son of Śiva, shone forth, having taken in his hand that greatly radiant Śakti, blazing with splendour like a great meteor.

Having seen him coming, exceedingly fierce, unperturbed, six-faced, immeasurable, the daitya said to the best of the gods, "This is the Kumāra, the slayer of foes."

Having thus spoken, that mighty one then set out to fight, aiming himself at Kumāra; that Tāraka took up a most wondrous Śakti, and spoke to the best of the gods.

"Having become Rāma, he killed the woman [Tāḍakā], and Vāli too was destroyed by him; and again the brahmin son of Viśravas [Rāvaṇa] was slain — thus the moral law taught by the Vedas was destroyed."
Noteवैश्रवणः here is used as a patronymic ("son of Viśravas") referring to Rāvaṇa, not to Kubera — who is more commonly known by this same epithet

"In the incarnation called 'Rasa' [the sixth, Paraśurāma], his own mother's head was cut off, and this wicked one also insulted the son of his guru [Gaṇeśa]."
Noteरसाख्यके uses the classical bhūtasaṅkhyā (object-number) convention in which "rasa" (the six flavours) denotes the numeral six — i.e. the sixth avatāra, Paraśurāma.

Note"कालाख्यम्" ("called Kāla/Death") is a descriptive epithet of Vīrabhadra's trident here, continuing the description begun in v.52 — not a separate named weapon.
