Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: having restrained Vīrabhadra and called to mind Śiva's feet, Kumāra (Kārtikeya) resolved to slay Tāraka himself; roaring, armed, and surrounded by his great army, he advanced amid the gods' cries of victory and the praises of the divine sages. A fierce and terrible battle, striking fear into all beings, then broke out between the two, each wielding his own Śakti; their bodies torn by repeated blows, they resorted to named martial arts — vaitālika, khecaraka, and prāpata — striking at each other's weapons and bodies alike, to the awestruck silence of the watching gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras, while the wind stilled, the sun dimmed, and the earth shook. A voice from the sky consoled the anxious gods, declaring that Kumāra would slay Tāraka, for Śiva himself stood among them in the form of a son; heartened, Kumāra pressed on, exchanging blow for blow with Tāraka — struck once into unconsciousness by Tāraka's own Śakti, he soon revived amid the sages' praise. As the mountains, led by Himālaya, arrived in fear and affection to watch the outcome, Kumāra reassured them that he would slay the wicked Tāraka before their eyes; bowing to Pārvatī and Śiva and taking up his radiant Śakti, he struck Tāraka down at last, shattering his body and ending his life on the spot. Kumāra, out of a warrior's restraint, did not strike the fallen foe again; with their leader dead, the daitya army broke and fled in terror — some slain, some seeking refuge at Kumāra's feet, some fleeing by the thousands into Pātāla — leaving the three worlds free of affliction and filled with joy. Śiva himself, with Pārvatī and his gaṇas, arrived to see his victorious son, whom Pārvatī fondled with great affection in her lap; Himālaya and his kin praised the divine family, while the gods, sages, siddhas, and cāraṇas sang hymns, showered flowers, danced, and played music amid cries of "Victory!" A great festival with kīrtana and ārati followed, with Viṣṇu himself especially delighted and joining Brahmā in praising Śiva, Śivā, and Kumāra; at last, praised by all, Rudra departed for his own mountain [Kailāsa] together with Bhavānī, surrounded by his gaṇas.
