जगर्जाथ महातेजाः (jagarjātha mahātejāḥ) — then he roared, that greatly radiant onethen he roared, that greatly radiant one·कार्तिकेयो महाबलः (kārtikeyo mahābalaḥ) — Kārtikeya, the mighty oneKārtikeya, the mighty one·सन्नद्धः सोऽभवत्क्रुद्धः (sannaddhaḥ so'bhavatkruddhaḥ) — he became armed and enragedhe became armed and enraged·सैन्येन महता वृतः (sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ) — surrounded by a great armysurrounded by a great army

तदा जय जयेत्युक्तं (tadā jaya jayetyuktaṃ) — then 'victory, victory' was proclaimedthen 'victory, victory' was proclaimed·सर्वैर्देवगणैस्तथा (sarvairdevagaṇaistathā) — by all the hosts of godsby all the hosts of gods·संस्तुतो वाग्भिरिष्टाभिः (saṃstuto vāgbhiriṣṭābhiḥ) — he was well praised with pleasing wordshe was well praised with pleasing words·तदैव च सुरर्षिभिः (tadaiva ca surarṣibhiḥ) — and at that very moment by the divine seersand at that very moment by the divine seers

तारकस्य कुमारस्य (tārakasya kumārasya) — of Tāraka and of Kumāraof Tāraka and of Kumāra·सङ्ग्रामोऽतीव दुःसहः (saṅgrāmo'tīva duḥsahaḥ) — the battle, exceedingly unbearablethe battle, exceedingly unbearable·जातस्तदा महाघोरः (jātastadā mahāghoraḥ) — then arose, most terriblethen arose, most terrible·सर्वभूतभयङ्करः (sarvabhūtabhayaṅkaraḥ) — striking fear into all beingsstriking fear into all beings

शक्तिहस्तौ च तौ वीरौ (śaktihastau ca tau vīrau) — and those two heroes, Śakti in handand those two heroes, Śakti in hand·युयुधाते परस्परम् (yuyudhāte parasparam) — fought with each otherfought with each other·सर्वेषां पश्यतां तत्र (sarveṣāṃ paśyatāṃ tatra) — there, while all watchedthere, while all watched·महाश्चर्यवतां मुने (mahāścaryavatāṃ mune) — who were struck with great wonder, O sagewho were struck with great wonder, O sage

शक्तिनिर्भिन्नदेहौ तौ (śaktinirbhinnadehau tau) — those two, their bodies pierced by the Śaktithose two, their bodies pierced by the Śakti·महासाधनसंयुतौ (mahāsādhanasaṃyutau) — endowed with great means [of combat]endowed with great means [of combat]·परस्परं वञ्चयन्तौ (parasparaṃ vañcayantau) — feinting against each otherfeinting against each other·सिंहाविव महाबलौ (siṃhāviva mahābalau) — like two mighty lionslike two mighty lions

वैतालिकं समाश्रित्य (vaitālikaṃ samāśritya) — resorting to [the style called] Vaitālikaresorting to [the style called] Vaitālika·तथा खेचरकं मतम् (tathā khecarakaṃ matam) — and likewise to the doctrine called Khecarakaand likewise to the doctrine called Khecaraka·प्रापतं च समाश्रित्य (prāpataṃ ca samāśritya) — and resorting also to [that called] Prāpataand resorting also to [that called] Prāpata·शक्त्या शक्तिं विजघ्नतुः (śaktyā śaktiṃ vijaghnatuḥ) — they struck at [each other's] Śakti with their Śaktisthey struck at [each other's] Śakti with their Śaktis

एभिर्मन्त्रैर्महावीरौ (ebhirmantrairmahāvīrau) — by means of these [combat] arts, the two great heroesby means of these [combat] arts, the two great heroes·चक्रतुर्युद्धमद्भुतम् (cakraturyuddhamadbhutam) — waged a wondrous battlewaged a wondrous battle·अन्योऽन्यं साधकौ भूत्वा (anyo'nyaṃ sādhakau bhūtvā) — each becoming intent on [overcoming] the othereach becoming intent on [overcoming] the other·महाबलपराक्रमौ (mahābalaparākramau) — both of great might and prowessboth of great might and prowess

मूर्ध्नि कण्ठे तथा चोर्वोः (mūrdhni kaṇṭhe tathā corvoḥ) — on the head, the neck, and likewise the two thighson the head, the neck, and likewise the two thighs·जान्वोश्चैव कटीतटे (jānvoścaiva kaṭītaṭe) — and also the two knees, on the hipand also the two knees, on the hip·वक्षस्युरसि पृष्ठे च (vakṣasyurasi pṛṣṭhe ca) — on the chest, the breast, and the backon the chest, the breast, and the back·चिच्छिदुश्च परस्परम् (cicchiduśca parasparam) — they cut into one anotherthey cut into one another

तदा तौ युध्यमानौ च (tadā tau yudhyamānau ca) — then those two, fightingthen those two, fighting·हन्तुकामौ महाबलौ (hantukāmau mahābalau) — the two mighty ones, desiring [each other's] deaththe two mighty ones, desiring [each other's] death·वल्गन्तौ वीरशब्दैश्च (valgantau vīraśabdaiśca) — leaping about, with heroic criesleaping about, with heroic cries·नानायुद्धविशारदौ (nānāyuddhaviśāradau) — both skilled in various modes of combatboth skilled in various modes of combat

अभवन्प्रेक्षकाः सर्वे (abhavanprekṣakāḥ sarve) — they all became spectatorsthey all became spectators·देवा गन्धर्वकिन्नराः (devā gandharvakinnarāḥ) — the gods, gandharvas, and kinnarasthe gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras·ऊचुः परस्परं तत्र (ūcuḥ parasparaṃ tatra) — they said to one another therethey said to one another there·कोऽस्मिन् युद्धे विजेष्यते (ko'smin yuddhe vijeṣyate) — 'who will be victorious in this battle?''who will be victorious in this battle?'

तदा नभोगता वाणी (tadā nabhogatā vāṇī) — then a voice moving in the skythen a voice moving in the sky·जगौ देवांश्च सान्त्वयन् (jagau devāṃśca sāntvayan) — spoke, consoling the godsspoke, consoling the gods·असुरं तारकं चात्र (asuraṃ tārakaṃ cātra) — the asura Tāraka, herethe asura Tāraka, here·कुमारोऽयं हनिष्यति (kumāro'yaṃ haniṣyati) — this Kumāra will slay [him]this Kumāra will slay [him]

मा शोच्यतां सुरैः सर्वैः (mā śocyatāṃ suraiḥ sarvaiḥ) — let there be no grieving by all the godslet there be no grieving by all the gods·सुखेन स्थीयतामिति (sukhena sthīyatāmiti) — 'let them abide at ease' — thus [it said]'let them abide at ease' — thus [it said]·युष्मदर्थं शङ्करो हि (yuṣmadarthaṃ śaṅkaro hi) — for indeed, for your sake, Śaṅkarafor indeed, for your sake, Śaṅkara·पुत्ररूपेण संस्थितः (putrarūpeṇa saṃsthitaḥ) — has taken his stand in the form of a sonhas taken his stand in the form of a son

श्रुत्वा तदा तां गगने समीरितां (śrutvā tadā tāṃ gagane samīritāṃ) — having then heard that [voice] uttered in the skyhaving then heard that [voice] uttered in the sky·वाचं शुभां स प्रमथैः समावृतः (vācaṃ śubhāṃ sa pramathaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ) — that auspicious voice, he, surrounded by the Pramathasthat auspicious voice, he, surrounded by the Pramathas·निहन्तुकामः सुखितः कुमारको (nihantukāmaḥ sukhitaḥ kumārako) — desiring to slay [him], glad at heart, that Kumāradesiring to slay [him], glad at heart, that Kumāra·दैत्याधिपं तारकमाश्वभूत्तदा (daityādhipaṃ tārakamāśvabhūttadā) — swiftly approached the lord of the daityas, Tārakaswiftly approached the lord of the daityas, Tāraka

शक्त्या तया महाबाहुः (śaktyā tayā mahābāhuḥ) — with that Śakti, the mighty-armed onewith that Śakti, the mighty-armed one·आजघान स्तनान्तरे (ājaghāna stanāntare) — struck [him] in the middle of the cheststruck [him] in the middle of the chest·कुमारः स्म रुषाविष्टः (kumāraḥ sma ruṣāviṣṭaḥ) — Kumāra, filled with rageKumāra, filled with rage·तारकासुरमोजसा (tārakāsuramojasā) — [struck] the asura Tāraka with [his] might[struck] the asura Tāraka with [his] might

तं प्रहारमनादृत्य (taṃ prahāramanādṛtya) — disregarding that blowdisregarding that blow·तारको दैत्यपुङ्गवः (tārako daityapuṅgavaḥ) — Tāraka, the foremost of daityasTāraka, the foremost of daityas·कुमारं चापि सङ्क्रुद्धः (kumāraṃ cāpi saṅkruddhaḥ) — and, greatly enraged, at Kumāraand, greatly enraged, at Kumāra·स्वशक्त्या सञ्जघान सः (svaśaktyā sañjaghāna saḥ) — he struck with his own Śaktihe struck with his own Śakti

तेन शक्तिप्रहारेण (tena śaktiprahāreṇa) — by that blow of the Śaktiby that blow of the Śakti·शाङ्करिर्मूर्च्छितोऽभवत् (śāṅkarirmūrcchito'bhavat) — the son of Śaṅkara fell unconsciousthe son of Śaṅkara fell unconscious·मुहूर्ताच्चेतनां प्राप (muhūrtāccetanāṃ prāpa) — after a moment he regained consciousnessafter a moment he regained consciousness·स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः (stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ) — being praised by the great sagesbeing praised by the great sages

यथा सिंहो मदोन्मत्तो (yathā siṃho madonmatto) — as a lion maddened with furyas a lion maddened with fury·हन्तुकामस्तथासुरम् (hantukāmastathāsuram) — desiring to slay, so [struck] the asuradesiring to slay, so [struck] the asura·कुमारस्तारकं शक्त्या (kumārastārakaṃ śaktyā) — Kumāra [struck] Tāraka with his ŚaktiKumāra [struck] Tāraka with his Śakti·स जघान प्रतापवान् (sa jaghāna pratāpavān) — that valorous one struck [him]that valorous one struck [him]

एवं परस्परं तौ हि (evaṃ parasparaṃ tau hi) — thus indeed those two, with each otherthus indeed those two, with each other·कुमारश्चापि तारकः (kumāraścāpi tārakaḥ) — Kumāra and also TārakaKumāra and also Tāraka·युयुधातेऽतिसंरब्धौ (yuyudhāte'tisaṃrabdhau) — fought, both exceedingly enragedfought, both exceedingly enraged·शक्तियुद्धविशारदौ (śaktiyuddhaviśāradau) — both skilled in the warfare of the Śaktiboth skilled in the warfare of the Śakti

अभ्यासपरमावास्तां (abhyāsaparamāvāstāṃ) — the two were utterly absorbed in [combat] practicethe two were utterly absorbed in [combat] practice·अन्योन्यं विजिगीषया (anyonyaṃ vijigīṣayā) — with the desire to conquer each otherwith the desire to conquer each other·पदातिनौ युध्यमानौ (padātinau yudhyamānau) — fighting on footfighting on foot·चित्ररूपौ तरस्विनौ (citrarūpau tarasvinau) — both swift, in wondrous [fighting] formsboth swift, in wondrous [fighting] forms

विविधैर्घातपुञ्जैस्तौ (vividhairghātapuñjaistau) — those two, with multitudes of various blowsthose two, with multitudes of various blows·अन्योन्यं विनिजघ्नतुः (anyonyaṃ vinijaghnatuḥ) — struck each otherstruck each other·नानामार्गान्प्रकुर्वन्तौ (nānāmārgānprakurvantau) — employing many methodsemploying many methods·गर्जन्तौ सुपराक्रमौ (garjantau suparākramau) — roaring, both of great valorroaring, both of great valor

अवलोकपराः सर्वे (avalokaparāḥ sarve) — all, intent only on watchingall, intent only on watching·देवगन्धर्वकिन्नराः (devagandharvakinnarāḥ) — the gods, gandharvas, and kinnarasthe gods, gandharvas, and kinnaras·विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः (vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmuḥ) — fell into utmost wonderfell into utmost wonder·नोचुः किञ्चन तत्र ते (nocuḥ kiñcana tatra te) — they said nothing at all therethey said nothing at all there

न ववौ पवमानश्च (na vavau pavamānaśca) — the wind ceased to blowthe wind ceased to blow·निष्प्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः (niṣprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ) — the sun became dimthe sun became dim·चचाल वसुधा सर्वा (cacāla vasudhā sarvā) — the whole earth trembledthe whole earth trembled·सशैलवनकानना (saśailavanakānanā) — together with its mountains and forest-grovestogether with its mountains and forest-groves

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र (etasminnantare tatra) — meanwhile, theremeanwhile, there·हिमालयमुखा धराः (himālayamukhā dharāḥ) — the mountains, headed by Himālayathe mountains, headed by Himālaya·स्नेहार्दितास्तदा जग्मुः (snehārditāstadā jagmuḥ) — melted with affection, went thenmelted with affection, went then·कुमारं च परीप्सवः (kumāraṃ ca parīpsavaḥ) — desirous of protecting Kumāradesirous of protecting Kumāra

ततः स दृष्ट्वा तान्सर्वान् (tataḥ sa dṛṣṭvā tānsarvān) — then, having seen all thosethen, having seen all those·भयभीतांश्च शाङ्करिः (bhayabhītāṃśca śāṅkariḥ) — afraid, the son of Śaṅkaraafraid, the son of Śaṅkara·पर्वतान्गिरिजापुत्रो (parvatāngirijāputro) — the mountains, [he] the son of Girijāthe mountains, [he] the son of Girijā·बभाषे परिबोधयन् (babhāṣe paribodhayan) — spoke [to them], comforting [them]spoke [to them], comforting [them]

मा खिद्यतां महाभागा (mā khidyatāṃ mahābhāgā) — 'let there be no distress, O most fortunate ones''let there be no distress, O most fortunate ones'·मा चिन्तां कुर्वतां नगाः (mā cintāṃ kurvatāṃ nagāḥ) — 'let the mountains have no anxiety''let the mountains have no anxiety'·घातयाम्यद्य पापिष्ठं (ghātayāmyadya pāpiṣṭhaṃ) — 'I shall slay this most wicked one today''I shall slay this most wicked one today'·सर्वेषां वः प्रपश्यताम् (sarveṣāṃ vaḥ prapaśyatām) — 'with all of you looking on''with all of you looking on'

एवं समाश्वास्य तदा (evaṃ samāśvāsya tadā) — having thus consoled, thenhaving thus consoled, then·पर्वतान् निर्जरान् गणान् (parvatān nirjarān gaṇān) — the mountains, the gods, and the gaṇasthe mountains, the gods, and the gaṇas·प्रणम्य गिरिजां शम्भुम् (praṇamya girijāṃ śambhum) — having bowed to Girijā and Śambhuhaving bowed to Girijā and Śambhu·आददे शक्तिमुत्प्रभाम् (ādade śaktimutprabhām) — he took up the exceedingly radiant Śaktihe took up the exceedingly radiant Śakti

तं तारकं हन्तुमनाः (taṃ tārakaṃ hantumanāḥ) — bent on slaying that Tārakabent on slaying that Tāraka·करशक्तिर्महाप्रभुः (karaśaktirmahāprabhuḥ) — Śakti in hand, the great lordŚakti in hand, the great lord·विरराज महावीरः (virarāja mahāvīraḥ) — shone forth, the great heroshone forth, the great hero·कुमारः शम्भुबालकः (kumāraḥ śambhubālakaḥ) — Kumāra, the child of ŚambhuKumāra, the child of Śambhu

शक्त्या तया जघानाथ (śaktyā tayā jaghānātha) — then, with that Śakti, he struckthen, with that Śakti, he struck·कुमारस्तारकासुरम् (kumārastārakāsuram) — Kumāra [struck] the asura TārakaKumāra [struck] the asura Tāraka·तेजसाढ्यः शङ्करस्य (tejasāḍhyaḥ śaṅkarasya) — endowed with Śaṅkara's splendourendowed with Śaṅkara's splendour·लोकक्लेशकरं च तम् (lokakleśakaraṃ ca tam) — him, the afflicter of the worldshim, the afflicter of the worlds

पपात सद्यः सहसा (papāta sadyaḥ sahasā) — he fell at once, suddenlyhe fell at once, suddenly·विशीर्णाङ्गोऽसुरः क्षितौ (viśīrṇāṅgo'suraḥ kṣitau) — the asura, his limbs shattered, on the groundthe asura, his limbs shattered, on the ground·तारकाख्यो महावीरः (tārakākhyo mahāvīraḥ) — that great hero named Tārakathat great hero named Tāraka·सर्वासुरगणाधिपः (sarvāsuragaṇādhipaḥ) — the lord of all the asura hoststhe lord of all the asura hosts

कुमारेण हतः सोऽतिवीरः (kumāreṇa hataḥ so'tivīraḥ) — slain by Kumāra, that exceedingly heroic oneslain by Kumāra, that exceedingly heroic one·स खलु तारकः (sa khalu tārakaḥ) — he, indeed, Tārakahe, indeed, Tāraka·लयं ययौ च तत्रैव (layaṃ yayau ca tatraiva) — passed away right therepassed away right there·सर्वेषां पश्यतां मुने (sarveṣāṃ paśyatāṃ mune) — while all looked on, O sagewhile all looked on, O sage

तथा तं पतितं दृष्ट्वा (tathā taṃ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — and having seen him fallenand having seen him fallen·तारकं बलवत्तरम् (tārakaṃ balavattaram) — that Tāraka, exceedingly powerfulthat Tāraka, exceedingly powerful·न जघान पुनर्वीरः (na jaghāna punarvīraḥ) — the hero did not strike againthe hero did not strike again·स गत्वा व्यसुमाहवे (sa gatvā vyasumāhave) — he, having approached [him], lifeless on the battlefieldhe, having approached [him], lifeless on the battlefield

हते तस्मिन्महादैत्ये (hate tasminmahādaitye) — when that great daitya was slainwhen that great daitya was slain·तारकाख्ये महाबले (tārakākhye mahābale) — named Tāraka, of great mightnamed Tāraka, of great might·क्षयं प्रणीता बहवोऽसुरा (kṣayaṃ praṇītā bahavo'surā) — many asuras were brought to destructionmany asuras were brought to destruction·देवगणैस्तदा (devagaṇaistadā) — by the hosts of gods, thenby the hosts of gods, then

केचिद्भीताः प्राञ्जलयो (kecidbhītāḥ prāñjalayo) — some, terrified, with joined palmssome, terrified, with joined palms·बभूवुस्तत्र चाहवे (babhūvustatra cāhave) — stood there in the battlestood there in the battle·छिन्नभिन्नाङ्गकाः केचिन्मृता (chinnabhinnāṅgakāḥ kecinmṛtā) — some, their limbs shattered, diedsome, their limbs shattered, died·दैत्याः सहस्रशः (daityāḥ sahasraśaḥ) — the daityas, by the thousandsthe daityas, by the thousands

केचिज्जाताः कुमारस्य (kecijjātāḥ kumārasya) — some went for [refuge] to Kumārasome went for [refuge] to Kumāra·शरणं शरणार्थिनः (śaraṇaṃ śaraṇārthinaḥ) — for shelter, seeking refugefor shelter, seeking refuge·वदन्तः पाहि पाहीति (vadantaḥ pāhi pāhīti) — crying, 'protect us, protect us'crying, 'protect us, protect us'·दैत्याः साञ्जलयस्तदा (daityāḥ sāñjalayastadā) — the daityas, with joined palms, thenthe daityas, with joined palms, then

कियन्तश्च हतास्तत्र (kiyantaśca hatāstatra) — and some were slain thereand some were slain there·कियन्तश्च पलायिताः (kiyantaśca palāyitāḥ) — and some fledand some fled·पलायमाना व्यथितास् (palāyamānā vyathitās) — those fleeing, distressedthose fleeing, distressed·ताडिता निर्ज्जरैर्गणैः (tāḍitā nirjjarairgaṇaiḥ) — were struck by the hosts of godswere struck by the hosts of gods

सहस्रशः प्रविष्टास्ते (sahasraśaḥ praviṣṭāste) — by the thousands, they enteredby the thousands, they entered·पाताले च जिजीषवः (pātāle ca jijīṣavaḥ) — into Pātāla, still desiring to conquerinto Pātāla, still desiring to conquer·पलायमानास्ते सर्वे (palāyamānāste sarve) — all of them, fleeingall of them, fleeing·भग्नाशा दैन्यमागताः (bhagnāśā dainyamāgatāḥ) — their hopes broken, they fell into miserytheir hopes broken, they fell into misery

एवं सर्वं दैत्यसैन्यं (evaṃ sarvaṃ daityasainyaṃ) — thus, the entire daitya armythus, the entire daitya army·भ्रष्टं जातं मुनीश्वर (bhraṣṭaṃ jātaṃ munīśvara) — was routed, O lord of sageswas routed, O lord of sages·न केचित्तत्र सन्तस्थुः (na kecittatra santasthuḥ) — none remained therenone remained there·गणदेवभयात्तदा (gaṇadevabhayāttadā) — out of fear of the gaṇas and the gods, thenout of fear of the gaṇas and the gods, then

आसीन्निष्कण्टकं सर्वं (āsīnniṣkaṇṭakaṃ sarvaṃ) — everything became free of thorns [untroubled]everything became free of thorns [untroubled]·हते तस्मिन्दुरात्मनि (hate tasmindurātmani) — when that wicked one was slainwhen that wicked one was slain·ते देवाः सुखमापन्नाः (te devāḥ sukhamāpannāḥ) — those gods attained happinessthose gods attained happiness·सर्वे शक्रादयस्तदा (sarve śakrādayastadā) — all of them, headed by Śakra, thenall of them, headed by Śakra, then

एवं विजयमापन्नं (evaṃ vijayamāpannaṃ) — thus, [beholding him] having attained victorythus, [beholding him] having attained victory·कुमारं निखिलाः सुराः (kumāraṃ nikhilāḥ surāḥ) — Kumāra, all the godsKumāra, all the gods·बभूवुर्युगपद् हृष्टाः (babhūvuryugapad hṛṣṭāḥ) — became joyful at oncebecame joyful at once·त्रिलोकाश्च महासुखाः (trilokāśca mahāsukhāḥ) — and the three worlds became greatly happyand the three worlds became greatly happy

तदा शिवोऽपि तं ज्ञात्वा (tadā śivo'pi taṃ jñātvā) — then Śiva too, having learned of thatthen Śiva too, having learned of that·विजयं कार्तिकस्य च (vijayaṃ kārtikasya ca) — the victory of Kārtikeyathe victory of Kārtikeya·तत्राजगाम स मुदा (tatrājagāma sa mudā) — he came there joyfullyhe came there joyfully·सगणः प्रियया सह (sagaṇaḥ priyayā saha) — with his gaṇas, together with his belovedwith his gaṇas, together with his beloved

स्वात्मजं स्वाङ्कमारोप्य (svātmajaṃ svāṅkamāropya) — placing her own son upon her lapplacing her own son upon her lap·कुमारं सूर्यवर्चसम् (kumāraṃ sūryavarcasam) — Kumāra, radiant as the sunKumāra, radiant as the sun·लालयामास सुप्रीत्या (lālayāmāsa suprītyā) — she fondled [him] with great loveshe fondled [him] with great love·शिवा च स्नेहसङ्कुला (śivā ca snehasaṅkulā) — and Śivā, overwhelmed with affectionand Śivā, overwhelmed with affection

हिमालयस्तदागत्य (himālayastadāgatya) — Himālaya, having then comeHimālaya, having then come·स्वपुत्रैः परिवारितः (svaputraiḥ parivāritaḥ) — surrounded by his own sonssurrounded by his own sons·सबन्धुः सानुगः शम्भुं (sabandhuḥ sānugaḥ śambhuṃ) — together with kinsmen and followers, [praised] Śambhutogether with kinsmen and followers, [praised] Śambhu·तुष्टाव च शिवां गुहम् (tuṣṭāva ca śivāṃ guham) — and praised Śivā and Guhaand praised Śivā and Guha
