Brahmā continues his account to Nārada of the fierce battle between gods and demons: in that tumultuous clash, Tāraka's mighty missile struck down Indra himself, who fell from his elephant and lay unconscious, overcome with anguish; the other guardians of the world and the gods, however strong, were defeated by the more powerful demons skilled in great warfare, and, unable to bear their fiery might, fled the field, while the victorious asuras roared and raised a tumultuous, joyous din. At that moment the wrathful Vīrabhadra, born of Śiva's own anger and leader of the gaṇas, set the gods behind him and advanced upon the boastful hero Tāraka; the gaṇas and the demons then fell upon one another with tridents, spears, nooses, swords, axes, and pattiśas. Vīrabhadra struck Tāraka down for a moment with his trident, but the demon rose and struck back with his śakti; the two, evenly matched in the art of war, fought on with many weapons, delivering a hair-raising duel that left every onlooker astonished as war-drums thundered around them. Seeing this fight, Nārada himself went to Vīrabhadra and told him to withdraw, since it was not fitting for him to slay Tāraka; the indignant but respectful Vīrabhadra answered with folded hands, declaring the code of true warriors — that those who drag their own lord onto the battlefield for protection are cowardly sinners bound for hell, while those who fight on fearlessly though wounded win praise in this world and the next and attain wondrous bliss — and vowed that he alone, without needing his master, would that very day rid the earth of Tāraka, calling Viṣṇu and the gods to witness. So saying, and calling Śambhu to mind, he resumed the fight; arrayed gloriously amid many bull-mounted, trident-bearing, three-eyed great heroes, he led hundreds of fearless gaṇas in a tumultuous battle against the demons, who, sustained by Tāraka's power, fought back with equal ferocity, crushing the gaṇas in their fury. Again and again a mighty general battle raged, until the gaṇas, delighting in combat and skilled in the highest weapons, at last triumphed and put the demons to flight, distressed and anxious. Seeing his own army thus routed, the enraged Tāraka himself went to destroy the hosts of gods; multiplying his arms into ten thousand and mounting his lion, he swiftly began felling gods and gaṇas alike on the battlefield. Witnessing this, the mighty Vīrabhadra flew into a great rage and, remembering Śiva's lotus feet, seized his supreme trident, whose blazing splendour set every direction and the very sky aflame — but at that instant his own lord, delighting in the spectacle, restrained him and the heroic Vīrabāhu and the other gaṇa-chiefs from the battle, and by that command Vīrabhadra withdrew. The great demon-lord Tāraka, his fury unappeased, rained arrows upon the gods and, inflamed and expert in every mode of warfare, at once challenged them, having by this feat rendered himself unassailable even to the mightiest and best of all the gods. Seeing the gods thus struck down and overcome with fear, the blessed Acyuta grew wrathful and swiftly armed himself for battle, taking up his discus Sudarśana, his bow Śārṅga, and his other weapons, and advanced against the great demon. A tremendous and terrifying battle then broke out between Hari and Tāraka before the eyes of all: Hari struck the demon with his upraised mace, but the mighty Tāraka split it in two with his trident; the wrathful Hari then loosed a volley of arrows from his Śārṅga bow, but Tāraka swiftly cut them all down with his own sharp shafts. Tāraka then struck Murāri with his śakti, felling him stunned to the ground; rising at once, the enraged Acyuta seized his discus and, roaring a great lion's roar, struck the demon-lord with its blazing flame, so that Tāraka too fell to the ground in pain. Rising again, the mighty demon-king swiftly cut down that discus with his own great śakti, and struck the beloved of the immortals once more with it; Acyuta in turn struck him with his sword Nandaka. Thus the demon and the mighty Viṣṇu, each undiminished in strength, fought on and on at great length in that battle, O sage.

Thus, in that most tumultuous battle bringing destruction to gods and demons, Indra, lord of the gods, was struck by Tāraka alone together with his supreme śakti-weapon.

Likewise, dear one, all the guardians of the world were defeated in battle by the mightier asuras, who were skilled in great warfare.
