वल्गन्तः कुर्वतो नादं (valgantaḥ kurvato nādaṃ) — leaping about, making a loud noiseleaping about, making a loud noise·भाविताश्शिवतेजसा (bhāvitāśśivatejasā) — inspired by Śiva's radianceinspired by Śiva's radiance·कुमारन्ते पुरस्कृत्य (kumārante puraskṛtya) — placing Kumāra before themplacing Kumāra before them·तारकं हन्तुमाययुः (tārakaṃ hantumāyayuḥ) — they advanced to slay Tārakathey advanced to slay Tāraka

देवानामुद्यमं श्रुत्वा (devānāmudyamaṃ śrutvā) — having heard of the gods' efforthaving heard of the gods' effort·तारकोऽपि महाबलः (tārako'pi mahābalaḥ) — the mighty Tāraka toothe mighty Tāraka too·सैन्येन महता सद्यो (sainyena mahatā sadyo) — at once, with a great armyat once, with a great army·ययौ योद्धुं सुरान् प्रति (yayau yoddhuṃ surān prati) — set out to fight against the godsset out to fight against the gods

तदा नभोऽङ्गना वाणीं (tadā nabho'ṅganā vāṇīṃ) — then a voice moving in the skythen a voice moving in the sky·जगादोपरि सत्वरम् (jagādopari satvaram) — spoke from above, swiftlyspoke from above, swiftly·शङ्करप्रेरिता सद्यो (śaṅkarapreritā sadyo) — at once inspired by Śaṅkaraat once inspired by Śaṅkara·हर्यादीनखिलान् सुरान् (haryādīnakhilān surān) — to Indra and all the godsto Indra and all the gods

कुमारं च पुरस्कृत्य (kumāraṃ ca puraskṛtya) — "placing Kumāra before you"placing Kumāra before you·सुरा यूयं समुद्यताः (surā yūyaṃ samudyatāḥ) — O gods, you who have risen upO gods, you who have risen up·दैत्यान्विजित्य सङ्ग्रामे (daityānvijitya saṅgrāme) — having conquered the daityas in battlehaving conquered the daityas in battle·जयिनोऽथ भविष्यथ (jayino'tha bhaviṣyatha) — you will then become victorious"you will then become victorious"

वाचं तु खेचरीं श्रुत्वा (vācaṃ tu khecarīṃ śrutvā) — having heard that voice moving in the skyhaving heard that voice moving in the sky·देवाः सर्वे समुत्सुकाः (devāḥ sarve samutsukāḥ) — all the gods, greatly eagerall the gods, greatly eager·वीरशब्दान् प्रकुर्वन्तो (vīraśabdān prakurvanto) — raising shouts of heroismraising shouts of heroism·निर्भया ह्यभवंस्तदा (nirbhayā hyabhavaṃstadā) — then indeed became fearlessthen indeed became fearless

गर्जमानास्तदा दैत्याः (garjamānāstadā daityāḥ) — then the daityas, roaringthen the daityas, roaring·तारकेणासुरेण ह (tārakeṇāsureṇa ha) — together with the asura Tārakatogether with the asura Tāraka·कम्पयन्तो भुवं (kampayanto bhuvaṃ) — making the earth tremblemaking the earth tremble·पादक्रमैर्वल्गुनकारकाः (pādakramairvalgunakārakāḥ) — with the tread of their feet, leaping aboutwith the tread of their feet, leaping about

गजमारोप्य देवेन्द्रः (gajamāropya devendraḥ) — Indra, having mounted [him] on an elephantIndra, having mounted [him] on an elephant·कुमारं ह्यग्रतोऽभवत् (kumāraṃ hyagrato'bhavat) — placed Kumāra, and went to the frontplaced Kumāra, and went to the front·सुरसैन्येन महता (surasainyena mahatā) — with the great army of the godswith the great army of the gods·लोकपालैः समावृतः (lokapālaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ) — surrounded by the guardians of the worldsurrounded by the guardians of the world

तदा दुन्दुभयो नेदुः (tadā dundubhayo neduḥ) — then drums resoundedthen drums resounded·भेरीतूर्याण्यनेकशः (bherītūryāṇyanekaśaḥ) — and many kettledrums and trumpetsand many kettledrums and trumpets·वीणावेणुमृदङ्गानि (vīṇāveṇumṛdaṅgāni) — vīṇās, flutes and mṛdaṅgasvīṇās, flutes and mṛdaṅgas·तथा गन्धर्वनिस्स्वनाः (tathā gandharvanissvanāḥ) — and also the sounds of the Gandharvas' musicand also the sounds of the Gandharvas' music

गजं दत्त्वा महेन्द्राय (gajaṃ dattvā mahendrāya) — having given the elephant to Mahendrahaving given the elephant to Mahendra·कुमारो यानमारुहत् (kumāro yānamāruhat) — Kumāra mounted a [new] vehicleKumāra mounted a [new] vehicle·अनेकाश्चर्यसम्भूतं (anekāścaryasambhūtaṃ) — arisen from many wondersarisen from many wonders·नानारत्नसमन्वितम् (nānāratnasamanvitam) — furnished with various jewelsfurnished with various jewels

विमानमारुह्य तदा महायशाः (vimānamāruhya tadā mahāyaśāḥ) — then, having mounted the celestial car, the greatly famed onethen, having mounted the celestial car, the greatly famed one·स शाङ्करिःसर्वगुणैरुपेतः (sa śāṅkariḥsarvaguṇairupetaḥ) — that son of Śaṅkara, endowed with every virtuethat son of Śaṅkara, endowed with every virtue·श्रिया समेतः परया बभौ महान् (śriyā sametaḥ parayā babhau mahān) — joined with supreme splendour, shone forth, greatjoined with supreme splendour, shone forth, great·संवीज्यमानश्चमरैर्महाप्रभैः (saṃvījyamānaścamarairmahāprabhaiḥ) — being fanned with radiant chowriesbeing fanned with radiant chowries

प्राचेतसं छत्रमतीवसुप्रभं (prācetasaṃ chatramatīvasuprabhaṃ) — the most radiant umbrella belonging to the son of Pracetas [Varuṇa]the most radiant umbrella belonging to the son of Pracetas [Varuṇa]·रत्नैरुपेतं विविधैर्विराजितम् (ratnairupetaṃ vividhairvirājitam) — furnished with various jewels, resplendentfurnished with various jewels, resplendent·धृतं तदा तच्च कुमारमूर्ध्नि वै (dhṛtaṃ tadā tacca kumāramūrdhni vai) — was then held over Kumāra's headwas then held over Kumāra's head·ह्यनन्तचान्द्रैः किरणैर्महाप्रभैः (hyanantacāndraiḥ kiraṇairmahāprabhaiḥ) — with countless, moon-like, greatly brilliant rayswith countless, moon-like, greatly brilliant rays

मिलितास्ते तदा सर्वे (militāste tadā sarve) — then all of them gathered togetherthen all of them gathered together·देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः (devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ) — the gods, headed by Śakrathe gods, headed by Śakra·स्वैः स्वैर्बलैः परिवृता (svaiḥ svairbalaiḥ parivṛtā) — surrounded each by his own armysurrounded each by his own army·युद्धकामा महाबलाः (yuddhakāmā mahābalāḥ) — mighty, and eager for battlemighty, and eager for battle

एवं देवाश्च दैत्याश्च (evaṃ devāśca daityāśca) — thus the gods and the daityasthus the gods and the daityas·योद्धुकामाः स्थिता भुवि (yoddhukāmāḥ sthitā bhuvi) — eager for battle, stood upon the eartheager for battle, stood upon the earth·सैन्येन महता तेन (sainyena mahatā tena) — with that great army of theirswith that great army of theirs·व्यूहं कृत्वा पृथक् पृथक् (vyūhaṃ kṛtvā pṛthak pṛthak) — having formed a battle-array, each separatelyhaving formed a battle-array, each separately

ते सेने सुरदैत्यानां (te sene suradaityānāṃ) — those two armies of the gods and the daityasthose two armies of the gods and the daityas·शुशुभाते परस्परम् (śuśubhāte parasparam) — shone splendidly against one anothershone splendidly against one another·हन्तुकामे तदान्योन्यं (hantukāme tadānyonyaṃ) — each then eager to slay the othereach then eager to slay the other·स्तूयमाने च बन्दिभिः (stūyamāne ca bandibhiḥ) — and being praised by bardsand being praised by bards

उभे सेने तदा तेषाम् (ubhe sene tadā teṣām) — then both their armiesthen both their armies·अगर्जेतां वनोपमे (agarjetāṃ vanopame) — roared, like [two] forestsroared, like [two] forests·भयङ्करेऽत्यवीराणाम् (bhayaṅkare'tyavīrāṇām) — terrifying to the extreme cowardsterrifying to the extreme cowards·इतरेषां सुखावहे (itareṣāṃ sukhāvahe) — but delightful to the others [the truly brave]but delightful to the others [the truly brave]

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र (etasminnantare tatra) — meanwhile, theremeanwhile, there·बलोन्मत्ताः परस्परम् (balonmattāḥ parasparam) — maddened with strength, against one anothermaddened with strength, against one another·दैत्या देवा महावीराः (daityā devā mahāvīrāḥ) — the daityas and the great-heroic godsthe daityas and the great-heroic gods·युयुधुः क्रोधविह्वलाः (yuyudhuḥ krodhavihvalāḥ) — fought, overcome with ragefought, overcome with rage

आसीत्सुतुमुलं युद्धं (āsītsutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ) — a most tumultuous battle arosea most tumultuous battle arose·देवदैत्यसमाकुलम् (devadaityasamākulam) — thronged with gods and daityasthronged with gods and daityas·रुण्डमुण्डाङ्कितं सर्वं (ruṇḍamuṇḍāṅkitaṃ sarvaṃ) — everything marked with headless trunks and severed headseverything marked with headless trunks and severed heads·क्षणेन समपद्यत (kṣaṇena samapadyata) — came about in a momentcame about in a moment

भूमौ निपतितास्तत्र (bhūmau nipatitāstatra) — there, fallen upon the groundthere, fallen upon the ground·शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः (śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ) — by the hundreds and then by the thousandsby the hundreds and then by the thousands·निकृत्ताङ्गा महाशस्त्रैः (nikṛttāṅgā mahāśastraiḥ) — their limbs cut off by great weaponstheir limbs cut off by great weapons·निहता वीरसम्मताः (nihatā vīrasammatāḥ) — slain, those honoured as heroesslain, those honoured as heroes

केचिद्विदारिताः पृष्ठे (kecidvidāritāḥ pṛṣṭhe) — some were torn open in the backsome were torn open in the back·कुन्तैरृष्टिभिरङ्कुशैः (kuntairṛṣṭibhiraṅkuśaiḥ) — by spears, by ṛṣṭi-lances, by goadsby spears, by ṛṣṭi-lances, by goads·छिन्नान्यपि शिरांस्येव (chinnānyapi śirāṃsyeva) — and severed heads tooand severed heads too·पतितानि च भूतले (patitāni ca bhūtale) — fell down upon the groundfell down upon the ground

बहूनि च कबन्धानि (bahūni ca kabandhāni) — and many headless trunksand many headless trunks·नृत्यमानानि तत्र वै (nṛtyamānāni tatra vai) — there dancing about, indeedthere dancing about, indeed·वल्गमानानि शतशो (valgamānāni śataśo) — leaping about by the hundredsleaping about by the hundreds·उद्यतास्त्रकराणि च (udyatāstrakarāṇi ca) — and their hands raised with weaponsand their hands raised with weapons

नद्यः प्रवर्तितास्तत्र (nadyaḥ pravartitāstatra) — there, rivers were set flowingthere, rivers were set flowing·शतशोऽसृङ्वहास्तदा (śataśo'sṛṅvahāstadā) — then in hundreds, carrying bloodthen in hundreds, carrying blood·भूतप्रेतादयस्तत्र (bhūtapretādayastatra) — and there, bhūtas, pretas and other [spirits]and there, bhūtas, pretas and other [spirits]·शतशश्च समागताः (śataśaśca samāgatāḥ) — gathered together in hundredsgathered together in hundreds

गोमायवश्शिवाः तत्र (gomāyavaśśivāḥ tatra) — there the jackals, male and female,there the jackals, male and female,·भक्षयन्तः पलं बहु (bhakṣayantaḥ palaṃ bahu) — devouring much fleshdevouring much flesh·तथा गृध्रवटा श्येना वायसा मांसभक्षकाः (tathā gṛdhravaṭā śyenā vāyasā māṃsabhakṣakāḥ) — and likewise the vultures, kites, hawks and crows, the flesh-eaters,and likewise the vultures, kites, hawks and crows, the flesh-eaters,·बुभुजुः पतितानां च पलानि सुबहूनि वै (bubhujuḥ patitānāṃ ca palāni subahūni vai) — consumed the very abundant flesh of those fallenconsumed the very abundant flesh of those fallen

अथाभूद् द्वन्द्वयुद्धं हि (athābhūd dvandvayuddhaṃ hi) — then indeed began single combatthen indeed began single combat·सुरासुरविमर्दनम् (surāsuravimardanam) — crushing to gods and asuras alikecrushing to gods and asuras alike·यं दृष्ट्वा हर्षिता वीराः (yaṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣitā vīrāḥ) — seeing which the heroes rejoicedseeing which the heroes rejoiced·क्लीबाश्च भयमागताः (klībāśca bhayamāgatāḥ) — and the cowardly became afraidand the cowardly became afraid

तारको युयुधे युद्धे (tārako yuyudhe yuddhe) — Tāraka fought in battleTāraka fought in battle·शक्रेण दितिजो बली (śakreṇa ditijo balī) — the mighty son of Diti, with Śakrathe mighty son of Diti, with Śakra·अग्निना सह संह्रादो (agninā saha saṃhrādo) — Saṃhrāda, together with AgniSaṃhrāda, together with Agni·जम्भेनैव यमः स्वयम् (jambhenaiva yamaḥ svayam) — and Yama himself with Jambhaand Yama himself with Jambha

महाप्रभुर्नैरृतेन (mahāprabhurnairṛtena) — Mahāprabhu, with NairṛtiMahāprabhu, with Nairṛti·पाशी सह बलेन च (pāśī saha balena ca) — and Pāśī [Varuṇa], together with Balaand Pāśī [Varuṇa], together with Bala·सुवीरो वायुना सार्धं (suvīro vāyunā sārdhaṃ) — Suvīra, together with VāyuSuvīra, together with Vāyu·पवमानेन गुह्यराट् (pavamānena guhyarāṭ) — and Guhyarāṭ, with Pavamānaand Guhyarāṭ, with Pavamāna

ईशानेन समं शम्भुर्युयुधे (īśānena samaṃ śambhuryuyudhe) — Śambhu fought equally with ĪśānaŚambhu fought equally with Īśāna·रणवित्तमः (raṇavittamaḥ) — [he being] most skilled in battle[he being] most skilled in battle·शुम्भः शेषेण युयुधे (śumbhaḥ śeṣeṇa yuyudhe) — Śumbha fought with ŚeṣaŚumbha fought with Śeṣa·कुम्भश्चन्द्रेण दानवः (kumbhaścandreṇa dānavaḥ) — and the dānava Kumbha, with Candraand the dānava Kumbha, with Candra

कुञ्जरो मिहिरेणाजौ (kuñjaro mihireṇājau) — Kuñjara, with Mihira, in battleKuñjara, with Mihira, in battle·महाबलपराक्रमः (mahābalaparākramaḥ) — of great strength and prowessof great strength and prowess·युयुधे परमास्त्रैश्च (yuyudhe paramāstraiśca) — fought with supreme weaponsfought with supreme weapons·नानायुद्धविशारदः (nānāyuddhaviśāradaḥ) — skilled in manifold kinds of warfareskilled in manifold kinds of warfare

एवं द्वन्द्वेन युद्धेन (evaṃ dvandvena yuddhena) — thus by great single combatthus by great single combat·महता च सुरासुराः (mahatā ca surāsurāḥ) — and the gods and demonsand the gods and demons·सङ्गरे युयुधुःसर्वे (saṅgare yuyudhuḥsarve) — all fought on in the battleall fought on in the battle·बलेन कृतनिश्चयाः (balena kṛtaniścayāḥ) — resolved by their strengthresolved by their strength

अन्योन्यं स्पर्द्धमानास्ते (anyonyaṃ sparddhamānāste) — those, vying with one anotherthose, vying with one another·अमरा दैत्या महाबलाः (amarā daityā mahābalāḥ) — the immortals and the daityas, of great strengththe immortals and the daityas, of great strength·तस्मिन्देवासुरे युद्धे (tasmindevāsure yuddhe) — in that battle of gods and asurasin that battle of gods and asuras·दुर्जया अभवन्मुने (durjayā abhavanmune) — became unconquerable, O sagebecame unconquerable, O sage

तदा च तेषां सुरदानवानां (tadā ca teṣāṃ suradānavānāṃ) — then, of those gods and dānavasthen, of those gods and dānavas·बभूव युद्धं तुमुलं जयैषिणाम् (babhūva yuddhaṃ tumulaṃ jayaiṣiṇām) — a tumultuous battle arose, each desiring victorya tumultuous battle arose, each desiring victory·सुखावहं वीरमनस्विनां वै (sukhāvahaṃ vīramanasvināṃ vai) — delightful indeed to the heroic and resolutedelightful indeed to the heroic and resolute·भयावहं चैव तथेतरेषाम् (bhayāvahaṃ caiva tathetareṣām) — and likewise terrifying to the othersand likewise terrifying to the others
