Chapter Seven · The Opening Battle Between the Gods and Tāraka · Verses 1–41

Brahmā continues his narration to Nārada: having witnessed Kumāra's wondrous deeds, Indra and the other gods, filled with trust and delight, set out joyfully, placing Kumāra at their head, to slay the mighty Tāraka. Hearing of their advance, Tāraka too marched forth at once with a vast army. As the gods, roaring like lions, marvelled at his approach, a divine voice from the sky, sent by Śaṅkara, assured them that with Kumāra leading them they would surely conquer the daityas; heartened and fearless, the gods advanced to the meeting-place of the earth and the ocean, where Tāraka, surrounded by countless asuras, met them amid thunderous war-drums and the earth-shaking tread of the demon host. Indra mounted Kumāra upon his own elephant and led the divine army, encircled by the guardians of the world, while Kumāra himself then took a further wondrous, jewelled celestial car, over whose head was held Varuṇa's own radiant umbrella, glowing like countless moons. The two immense armies arrayed themselves separately and, praised by their bards, roared at one another like forests — terrifying to cowards and delightful to the brave — until the battle joined and a tumultuous slaughter of gods and daityas filled the field within moments with severed heads and limbs: warriors lost arms and thighs to sword-strokes, bodies were crushed by maces and hammers, hearts pierced by nooses and darts, and backs torn open by lances and goads, while headless trunks danced about brandishing weapons, rivers of blood flowed in their hundreds, and hosts of bhūtas and pretas gathered to the field, where jackals, vultures, kites, hawks and crows fed upon the abundant flesh of the fallen. In the midst of this carnage the mighty Tāraka himself advanced anew, and Indra and the gods went out to meet him, and a great single combat broke out between the hosts, delighting the heroic and terrifying the fainthearted: Tāraka fought Śakra himself; Saṃhrāda fought Agni; Yama fought Jambha; Mahāprabhu fought Nairṛti; Varuṇa (Pāśī) fought Bala; Suvīra fought Vāyu; Guhyarāṭ fought Pavamāna; Śambhu fought Īśāna; Śumbha fought Śeṣa; the dānava Kumbha fought Candra; and Kuñjara fought Mihira, the sun, with the mightiest of weapons. Thus, matched against one another in strength and resolve, the gods and demons became unconquerable rivals in that terrible war — a battle that brought joy to the truly heroic and dread to the cowardly, leaving the earth ravaged and fearsome with the fallen, yet, Brahmā says, a source of the greatest delight to the resolute.
