अथ पञ्चमोऽध्यायः

Continuing the roll-call begun in the previous chapter (the first nine Dvāparas), Śiva names his avatāras for the tenth through the twenty-eighth Dvāpara of the same Vaivasvata Manvantara, each paired with that age's Vyāsa and four disciples: an avatāra at Bhṛgutuṅga for Vyāsa Tridhāmā (10th); Tapa at Gaṅgādvāra for Vyāsa Trivṛt (11th); Atri at Hemakañcuka for Vyāsa Śatatejas (12th); Bali at the Vālakhilyas' hermitage on Gandhamādana for Vyāsa Nārāyaṇa (13th); Gautama in the line of Aṅgiras for Vyāsa Rakṣa (14th); Vedaśirā on the Vedaśiras ridge north of the Sarasvatī for Vyāsa Tryāruṇi (15th); Gokarṇa for Vyāsa Deva (16th); Guhāvāsī on the Himālaya for Vyāsa Devakṛtañjaya (17th); Śikhaṇḍī in the Siddhakṣetra of that name for Vyāsa Ṛtañjaya (18th); Jaṭī-Mālī for Vyāsa Bharadvāja (19th); Aṭṭahāsa for Vyāsa Gautama (20th); Dāruka in the Dāruvana for Vyāsa Vācaḥśravā (21st); Lāṅgalī-Bhīma the plough-bearer at Vārāṇasī for Vyāsa Śuṣmāyaṇa (22nd); Śveta on Mount Kālañjara for Vyāsa Tṛṇabindu (23rd); Śūlī at Naimiṣa for a Yakṣa Vyāsa (24th); Daṇḍī Muṇḍīśvara for Vyāsa Śakti (25th); Sahiṣṇu at Bhadravaṭapura for Vyāsa Parāśara (26th); and Somaśarmā at Prabhāsa for Vyāsa Jātūkarṇya (27th). For the twenty-eighth and present Dvāpara — when Parāśara's son becomes the Vyāsa Dvaipāyana and Viṣṇu's own portion is born as Vāsudeva Kṛṣṇa — Śiva describes his most celebrated avatāra of the cycle: taking, through his Yogamāyā, the body of a brahmacārī to astonish the world, abandoning that body as if dead in a cremation ground, and entering, together with Brahmā and Viṣṇu, the sacred cave of Meru, to be born as one named Laṅkulī; the place of this 'body-avatāra' (Kāyāvatāra) will remain a famed Siddhakṣetra for as long as the earth endures — the Purāṇa's own account of the teacher later known as Lakulīśa. Each of the nineteen avatāras has four disciples, learned celibate yogis who attain the world of Śiva. Nandī has Śiva close with a summary: in every Manvantara twenty-eight Vyāsas appear across the twenty-eight Dvāparas, and a Yogeśvara avatāra of Śiva appears at the start of each following Kali age, each with four immortal Mahāśaiva disciples — Pāśupata ascetics smeared in ash, wearing rudrākṣa and the tripuṇḍra, devoted to liṅga-worship, one hundred and twelve in all. Having thus told Brahmā the mark of his avatāras across all twenty-eight ages down to Kṛṣṇa's own time, Maheśvara blesses Brahmā and vanishes. पिछले अध्यायमें आरम्भ की गयी सूची (प्रथम नौ द्वापर) को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, शिवजी वैवस्वत मन्वन्तरके दसवें सेलेकर अट्ठाईसवें द्वापरतकके अपने अवतारोंका वर्णन करते हैं, प्रत्येकको उस युगके व्यास तथा चार शिष्योंके साथ: दसवें (व्यास त्रिधामा) में भृगुतुंगपर एक अवतार; ग्यारहवें (व्यास त्रिवृत) में गंगाद्वारपर तप; बारहवें (व्यास शततेजा) में हेमकंचुकपर अत्रि; तेरहवें (व्यास नारायण) में गन्धमादनपर वालखिल्योंके आश्रममें बलि; चौदहवें (व्यास रक्ष) में अंगिरा वंशमें गौतम; पन्द्रहवें (व्यास त्र्यारुणि) में सरस्वतीके उत्तर वेदशिरस् पर्वतपर वेदशिरा; सोलहवें (व्यास देव) में गोकर्ण; सत्रहवें (व्यास देवकृतंजय) में हिमालयपर गुहावासी; अठारहवें (व्यास ऋतंजय) में उसी नामके सिद्धक्षेत्रमें शिखण्डी; उन्नीसवें (व्यास भरद्वाज) में जटी-माली; बीसवें (व्यास गौतम) में अट्टहासपर्वतपर अट्टहास; इक्कीसवें (व्यास वाचःश्रवा) में दारुवनमें दारुक; बाईसवें (व्यास शुष्मायण) में वाराणसीमें हलधारी लांगली-भीम; तेईसवें (व्यास तृणबिन्दु) में कालंजरपर्वतपर श्वेत; चौबीसवें (यक्ष व्यास) में नैमिषमें शूली; पच्चीसवें (व्यास शक्ति) में दण्डी मुण्डीश्वर; छब्बीसवें (व्यास पराशर) में भद्रवटपुरमें सहिष्णु; और सत्ताईसवें (व्यास जातूकर्ण्य) में प्रभासमें सोमशर्मा। अट्ठाईसवें तथा वर्तमान द्वापरके लिये — जब पराशरके पुत्र द्वैपायन व्यास होंगे और विष्णुका ही अंश वासुदेव कृष्णके रूपमें जन्म लेगा — शिवजी अपने सबसे प्रसिद्ध अवतारका वर्णन करते हैं: योगमायाके द्वारा संसारको चकित करनेके लिये ब्रह्मचारीका शरीर धारण करना, उस शरीरको मृतकी भाँति श्मशानमें त्याग देना, और ब्रह्मा तथा विष्णुके साथ मेरुकी पवित्र गुहामें प्रवेश करके लंकुली नामसे जन्म लेना; इस "कायावतार" का स्थान पृथ्वीके रहनेतक एक प्रसिद्ध सिद्धक्षेत्र बना रहेगा — यह आगे चलकर लकुलीश नामसे विख्यात आचार्यकी पौराणिक कथा है। इन उन्नीसों अवतारोंमेंसे प्रत्येकके चार विद्वान् एवं ब्रह्मचारी योगी शिष्य हैं, जो शिवलोकको प्राप्त होते हैं। अन्तमें नन्दी शिवजीके सारांशको बताते हैं: प्रत्येक मन्वन्तरमें अट्ठाईस व्यास अट्ठाईस द्वापरोंमें प्रकट होते हैं, और प्रत्येक कलियुगके आरम्भमें शिवका एक योगेश्वर-अवतार होता है, जिसके साथ चार अविनाशी महाशैव शिष्य होते हैं — भस्मधारी, रुद्राक्ष तथा त्रिपुण्ड्रधारी पाशुपत तपस्वी, कुल एक सौ बारह। मनुसे लेकर कृष्णके समयतक अट्ठाईसों युगोंमें अपने अवतारोंका यह लक्षण ब्रह्माजीको बताकर महेश्वर उन्हें आशीर्वाद देकर अन्तर्धान हो जाते हैं।
