Sanatkumāra asks Nandīśvara how, though born of Mahādeva's own portion, he came to attain the state of Śiva; Nandīśvara answers by telling his own story. The sage Śilāda, urged by his ancestors to labour for their deliverance, performs fierce austerities to Indra for a son who is both unborn-of-a-womb and deathless, but Indra — and, after him, Viṣṇu and Brahmā — tell him that no god can grant such a son; only Maheśvara can. Śilāda then turns his tapas upon Śiva himself, and for a thousand divine years he stands buried in an anthill, eaten to the bone by insects, until Śiva appears and shows him his own divine form; lost in the depths of his trance, Śilāda cannot even hear Śiva's offer of a boon until Śiva's own touch ends his penance. Falling at Śiva's feet in joy, Śilāda again asks for a son equal to Śiva himself — unborn and undying — and Śiva promises to be born to him as his own son, named Nandī, so that Śilāda will become father to the father of the three worlds. The very moment Śiva vanishes and Śilāda, back at his hermitage, begins ploughing the ground for a sacrifice, the radiant child is born from Śiva's own body as Śilāda's son; the sky rains flowers, the Siddhas and Kinnaras sing, and Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and Ambikā themselves come to bless him, while Śilāda, overjoyed, names him Nandī. Taking on a human form, Nandī is raised, initiated and taught the Vedas and all the scriptures by his loving father; but when he is seven, the sages Mitra and Varuṇa come to see this prodigy and weep to tell Śilāda that, for all his learning, Nandī is fated to die within the year. Śilāda collapses in grief, but the boy, remembering Śiva's lotus feet, comforts his father: no power in creation can harm him, he vows, for he will conquer death not through austerity or learning but through devotion to Maheśvara alone. When his father asks what practice will save him, Nandī simply bows at Śilāda's feet, circles him in reverence, and sets off for the forest to make good his vow — the fulfilment of which is told in the chapter that follows.
