यदा भस्म चकाराशु (yadā bhasma cakārāśu) — when it swiftly reduced to asheswhen it swiftly reduced to ashes·तृतीयनयनानलः (tṛtīyanayanānalaḥ) — the fire of the third eyethe fire of the third eye·शम्भोः कामं प्रजज्वाल (śambhoḥ kāmaṃ prajajvāla) — Śambhu's Kāma — it then blazed onŚambhu's Kāma — it then blazed on·सर्वतो विफलस्तदा (sarvato viphalastadā) — on every side, purposelessly, thenon every side, purposelessly, then

हाहाकारो महानासीत् (hāhākāro mahānāsīt) — a great cry of distress arosea great cry of distress arose·त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे (trailokye sacarācare) — throughout the three worlds, moving and unmovingthroughout the three worlds, moving and unmoving·सर्वे देवर्षयस्तात (sarve devarṣayastāta) — all the gods and sages, dear sonall the gods and sages, dear son·शरणं मां ययुर्द्रुतम् (śaraṇaṃ māṃ yayurdrutam) — came swiftly to me for refugecame swiftly to me for refuge

सर्वे निवेदयामासुः (sarve nivedayāmāsuḥ) — all of them relatedall of them related·तद्दुःखं मह्यमाकुलाः (tadduḥkhaṃ mahyamākulāḥ) — that distress to me, in agitationthat distress to me, in agitation·सुप्रणम्य सुसंस्तूय (supraṇamya susaṃstūya) — bowing well and praising wellbowing well and praising well·करौ बद्ध्वा नताननाः (karau baddhvā natānanāḥ) — with joined hands, their faces bowed lowwith joined hands, their faces bowed low

तच्छ्रुत्वाहं शिवं स्मृत्वा (tacchrutvāhaṃ śivaṃ smṛtvā) — hearing that, and remembering Śivahearing that, and remembering Śiva·तद्धेतुं सुविमृश्य च (taddhetuṃ suvimṛśya ca) — and well considering its causeand well considering its cause·गतस्तत्र विनीतात्मा (gatastatra vinītātmā) — humble in spirit, I went therehumble in spirit, I went there·त्रिलोकावनहेतवे (trilokāvanahetave) — for the sake of protecting the three worldsfor the sake of protecting the three worlds

संदग्धुकामः स शुचिः (saṃdagdhukāmaḥ sa śuciḥ) — that pure [fire], wishing to burn everythingthat pure [fire], wishing to burn everything·ज्वालामालातिदीपितः (jvālāmālātidīpitaḥ) — blazing exceedingly with garlands of flameblazing exceedingly with garlands of flame·स्तंभितोऽरं मया (staṃbhito'raṃ mayā) — was duly halted by mewas duly halted by me·शंभुप्रसादाप्तसुतेजसा (śaṃbhuprasādāptasutejasā) — through the excellent radiance obtained by Śambhu's gracethrough the excellent radiance obtained by Śambhu's grace

अथ क्रोधमयं वह्निं (atha krodhamayaṃ vahniṃ) — then that fire, made of wraththen that fire, made of wrath·दग्धुकामं जगत्त्रयम् (dagdhukāmaṃ jagattrayam) — wishing to burn the three worldswishing to burn the three worlds·वाडवं तमकार्षं च (vāḍavaṃ tamakārṣaṃ ca) — I turned it into the submarine [mare-fire]I turned it into the submarine [mare-fire]·सौम्यज्वालामुखं मुने (saumyajvālāmukhaṃ mune) — gentle-flamed of mouth, O sagegentle-flamed of mouth, O sage

तं वाडवतनुमहं (taṃ vāḍavatanumahaṃ) — that one, in submarine-mare form, Ithat one, in submarine-mare form, I·समादाय शिवेच्छया (samādāya śivecchayā) — taking with me, by Śiva's willtaking with me, by Śiva's will·सागरं समगां (sāgaraṃ samagāṃ) — went to the oceanwent to the ocean·लोकहिताय जगतां पतिः (lokahitāya jagatāṃ patiḥ) — for the good of the world, I, lord of creaturesfor the good of the world, I, lord of creatures

आगतं मां समालोक्य (āgataṃ māṃ samālokya) — seeing me arrivedseeing me arrived·सागरस्सांजलिर्मुने (sāgarassāṃjalirmune) — the ocean, with joined hands, O sagethe ocean, with joined hands, O sage·धृत्वा च पौरुषं रूपम् (dhṛtvā ca pauruṣaṃ rūpam) — having assumed a human formhaving assumed a human form·आगतः संनिधिं मम (āgataḥ saṃnidhiṃ mama) — came into my presencecame into my presence

सुप्रणम्याथ मां सिंधुः (supraṇamyātha māṃ siṃdhuḥ) — the ocean, then, having bowed well to methe ocean, then, having bowed well to me·संस्तूय च यथाविधि (saṃstūya ca yathāvidhi) — and duly praised, as prescribedand duly praised, as prescribed·स मामुवाच सुप्रीत्या (sa māmuvāca suprītyā) — he spoke to me with great affectionhe spoke to me with great affection·सर्वलोकपितामहम् (sarvalokapitāmaham) — to me, grandsire of all the worldsto me, grandsire of all the worlds

किमर्थमागतोऽसि त्वं (kimarthamāgato'si tvaṃ) — for what purpose have you comefor what purpose have you come·ब्रह्मन्नत्राखिलाधिप (brahmannatrākhilādhipa) — here, O Brahman, O lord of allhere, O Brahman, O lord of all·तन्निदेशय सुप्रीत्या (tannideśaya suprītyā) — instruct me in that, with great affectioninstruct me in that, with great affection·मत्वा मां च स्वसेवकम् (matvā māṃ ca svasevakam) — considering me your own servantconsidering me your own servant

अथाहं सागरवचः श्रुत्वा (athāhaṃ sāgaravacaḥ śrutvā) — then I, having heard the ocean's wordsthen I, having heard the ocean's words·प्रीतिपुरस्सरम् (prītipurassaram) — preceded by affectionpreceded by affection·प्रावोचं शंकरं स्मृत्वा (prāvocaṃ śaṃkaraṃ smṛtvā) — spoke, remembering Śaṅkaraspoke, remembering Śaṅkara·लौकिकं हितमावहन् (laukikaṃ hitamāvahan) — bearing in mind the good of the worldbearing in mind the good of the world

श्रृणु तात महाधीमन् (śṛṇu tāta mahādhīman) — hear, dear one, O greatly wisehear, dear one, O greatly wise·सर्वलोकहितावह (sarvalokahitāvaha) — O bringer of good to all the worldsO bringer of good to all the worlds·वच्म्यहं प्रीतितः सिंधो (vacmyahaṃ prītitaḥ siṃdho) — I speak out of affection, O oceanI speak out of affection, O ocean·शिवेच्छाप्रेरितो हृदा (śivecchāprerito hṛdā) — impelled at heart by the will of Śivaimpelled at heart by the will of Śiva

अयं क्रोधो महेशस्य (ayaṃ krodho maheśasya) — this is the wrath of Maheśathis is the wrath of Maheśa·वाडवात्मा महाप्रभुः (vāḍavātmā mahāprabhuḥ) — in submarine-mare form, of great powerin submarine-mare form, of great power·दग्ध्वा कामं द्रुतं (dagdhvā kāmaṃ drutaṃ) — having swiftly burnt Kāmahaving swiftly burnt Kāma·सर्वं दग्धुकामोऽभवत्ततः (sarvaṃ dagdhukāmo'bhavattataḥ) — it then became one wishing to burn everythingit then became one wishing to burn everything

आर्थितोऽहं सुरैः शीघ्रं (ārthito'haṃ suraiḥ śīghraṃ) — I was swiftly beseeched by the godsI was swiftly beseeched by the gods·पीडितैः शंकरेच्छया (pīḍitaiḥ śaṃkarecchayā) — afflicted, by the will of Śaṅkaraafflicted, by the will of Śaṅkara·तत्रागत्य द्रुतं तं वै (tatrāgatya drutaṃ taṃ vai) — having quickly gone there, that [fire] indeedhaving quickly gone there, that [fire] indeed·तात स्तंभितवान् शुचिम् (tāta staṃbhitavān śucim) — dear son, I halted, pure as it wasdear son, I halted, pure as it was

वाडवं रूपमाधत्त (vāḍavaṃ rūpamādhatta) — it then took on the submarine-mare formit then took on the submarine-mare form·तमादायागतोऽत्र ह (tamādāyāgato'tra ha) — taking it, I came heretaking it, I came here·निर्दिशामि जलाधार (nirdiśāmi jalādhāra) — I now instruct you, O holder of the watersI now instruct you, O holder of the waters·त्वामहं करुणाकरः (tvāmahaṃ karuṇākaraḥ) — I, a doer of compassion, [instruct] youI, a doer of compassion, [instruct] you

अयं क्रोधो महेशस्य (ayaṃ krodho maheśasya) — this wrath of Maheśathis wrath of Maheśa·वाडवं रूपमाश्रितः (vāḍavaṃ rūpamāśritaḥ) — having taken refuge in the submarine-mare formhaving taken refuge in the submarine-mare form·ज्वालामुखस्त्वया धार्यो (jvālāmukhastvayā dhāryo) — its mouth aflame, is to be held by youits mouth aflame, is to be held by you·यावदाभूतसम्प्लवम् (yāvadābhūtasamplavam) — until the dissolution of all beingsuntil the dissolution of all beings

यदात्राहं समागम्य (yadātrāhaṃ samāgamya) — when I, having come herewhen I, having come here·वत्स्यामि सरितां पते (vatsyāmi saritāṃ pate) — shall dwell, O lord of riversshall dwell, O lord of rivers·तदा त्वया परित्याज्यः (tadā tvayā parityājyaḥ) — then by you is to be releasedthen by you is to be released·क्रोधोऽयं शाङ्करोऽद्भुतः (krodho'yaṃ śāṅkaro'dbhutaḥ) — this wondrous wrath of Śaṅkarathis wondrous wrath of Śaṅkara

भोजनं तोयमेतस्य (bhojanaṃ toyametasya) — the food of this one shall be waterthe food of this one shall be water·तव नित्यं भविष्यति (tava nityaṃ bhaviṣyati) — yours, foreveryours, forever·यत्नादेवावधार्योऽयं (yatnādevāvadhāryo'yaṃ) — this one is to be held only through effortthis one is to be held only through effort·यथा नोपैति चांतरम् (yathā nopaiti cāṃtaram) — so that it does not go elsewhereso that it does not go elsewhere

इत्युक्तो हि मया सिंधुः (ityukto hi mayā siṃdhuḥ) — thus addressed by me, the oceanthus addressed by me, the ocean·अंगीचक्रे तदा ध्रुवम् (aṃgīcakre tadā dhruvam) — then accepted it firmlythen accepted it firmly·ग्रहीतुं वाडवं वह्निं (grahītuṃ vāḍavaṃ vahniṃ) — to receive the submarine fireto receive the submarine fire·रौद्रं चाशक्यमन्यतः (raudraṃ cāśakyamanyataḥ) — fierce, and impossible for anyone elsefierce, and impossible for anyone else

ततः प्रविष्टो जलधौ (tataḥ praviṣṭo jaladhau) — then, having entered the oceanthen, having entered the ocean·स वाडवतनुः शुचिः (sa vāḍavatanuḥ śuciḥ) — that pure one, of submarine-mare formthat pure one, of submarine-mare form·वायोघान्सुदहंस्तस्य (vāyoghānsudahaṃstasya) — thoroughly burning its floods of waterthoroughly burning its floods of water·ज्वालामालाभिदीपितः (jvālāmālābhidīpitaḥ) — blazing with garlands of flameblazing with garlands of flame

ततः संतुष्टचेतस्कः (tataḥ saṃtuṣṭacetaskaḥ) — then, content in mindthen, content in mind·स्वं धामाहं गतो मुने (svaṃ dhāmāhaṃ gato mune) — I went to my own abode, O sageI went to my own abode, O sage·अन्तर्धानमगात्सिंधुः (antardhānamagātsiṃdhuḥ) — the ocean vanished from sightthe ocean vanished from sight·दिव्यरूपः प्रणम्य माम् (divyarūpaḥ praṇamya mām) — in his divine form, having bowed to mein his divine form, having bowed to me

स्वास्थ्यं प्राप जगत्सर्वं (svāsthyaṃ prāpa jagatsarvaṃ) — the whole world attained well-beingthe whole world attained well-being·निर्मुक्तं तद्भवाद्भयात् (nirmuktaṃ tadbhavādbhayāt) — freed from the fear born of itfreed from the fear born of it·देवा बभूवुः सुखिनो (devā babhūvuḥ sukhino) — the gods became happythe gods became happy·मुनयश्च महामुने (munayaśca mahāmune) — and the sages too, O great sageand the sages too, O great sage
