श्रूयतां सा कथा तात (śrūyatāṃ sā kathā tāta) — let that story be heard, dear sonlet that story be heard, dear son·यज्जातं तदनन्तरम् (yajjātaṃ tadanantaram) — that which happened afterwardthat which happened afterward·तव स्नेहात्प्रवक्ष्यामि (tava snehātpravakṣyāmi) — out of affection for you I shall tellout of affection for you I shall tell·शिवलीलां मुदावहाम् (śivalīlāṃ mudāvahām) — Śiva's play, which brings delightŚiva's play, which brings delight

धैर्यस्य व्यसनं दृष्ट्वा (dhairyasya vyasanaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — having seen the loss of his own firmnesshaving seen the loss of his own firmness·महायोगी महेश्वरः (mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ) — the great yogi, Maheśvarathe great yogi, Maheśvara·विचिचिन्त मनस्येवं (vicicinta manasyevaṃ) — pondered thus in his mindpondered thus in his mind·विस्मितोऽति ततः परम् (vismito'ti tataḥ param) — exceedingly astonished, thereuponexceedingly astonished, thereupon

किमु विघ्नाः समुत्पन्नाः (kimu vighnāḥ samutpannāḥ) — what obstacles indeed have arisenwhat obstacles indeed have arisen·कुर्वतस्तप उत्तमम् (kurvatastapa uttamam) — for me who was performing excellent austerityfor me who was performing excellent austerity·केन मे विकृतं चित्तं (kena me vikṛtaṃ cittaṃ) — by whom has my mind been pervertedby whom has my mind been perverted·कृतमत्र कुकर्मिणा (kṛtamatra kukarmiṇā) — this deed done here by some evildoerthis deed done here by some evildoer

कुवर्णनं मया प्रीत्या (kuvarṇanaṃ mayā prītyā) — an unseemly description, by me, out of fondnessan unseemly description, by me, out of fondness·परस्त्र्युपरि वै कृतम् (parastryupari vai kṛtam) — was indeed made of another's wifewas indeed made of another's wife·जातो धर्मविरोधोऽत्र (jāto dharmavirodho'tra) — a conflict with dharma has arisen herea conflict with dharma has arisen here·श्रुतिसीमा विलंघिता (śrutisīmā vilaṃghitā) — the boundary set by scripture has been transgressedthe boundary set by scripture has been transgressed

विचिंत्येत्थं महायोगी (viciṃtyetthaṃ mahāyogī) — having thus pondered, the great yogihaving thus pondered, the great yogi·परमेशः सतां गतिः (parameśaḥ satāṃ gatiḥ) — the supreme lord, refuge of the virtuousthe supreme lord, refuge of the virtuous·दिशो विलोकयामास (diśo vilokayāmāsa) — looked all around the directionslooked all around the directions·परितः शंकितस्तदा (paritaḥ śaṃkitastadā) — on every side, apprehensive, thenon every side, apprehensive, then

कामः स्थितोऽन्तरिक्षे (kāmaḥ sthito'ntarikṣe) — Kāma, standing in the skyKāma, standing in the sky·स धृत्वा तत्सशरं धनुः (sa dhṛtvā tatsaśaraṃ dhanuḥ) — holding his bow with its arrowholding his bow with its arrow·चिक्षेपास्त्रं दुर्निवारम् (cikṣepāstraṃ durnivāram) — loosed his weapon, irresistibleloosed his weapon, irresistible·अमोघं शंकरे मुने (amoghaṃ śaṃkare mune) — unfailing, at Śaṅkara, O sageunfailing, at Śaṅkara, O sage

मोघीभूते शिवे स्वेऽस्त्रे (moghībhūte śive sve'stre) — his own weapon having become futile upon Śivahis own weapon having become futile upon Śiva·भयमापाशु मन्मथः (bhayamāpāśu manmathaḥ) — Manmatha quickly fell into fearManmatha quickly fell into fear·चकम्पे च पुरः स्थित्वा (cakampe ca puraḥ sthitvā) — and trembled, standing before himand trembled, standing before him·दृष्ट्वा मृत्युंजयं प्रभुम् (dṛṣṭvā mṛtyuṃjayaṃ prabhum) — seeing the lord, conqueror of deathseeing the lord, conqueror of death

सस्मार त्रिदशान्सर्वान् (sasmāra tridaśānsarvān) — he remembered all the thirty godshe remembered all the thirty gods·शक्रादीन्भयविह्वलः (śakrādīnbhayavihvalaḥ) — headed by Śakra, overwhelmed with fearheaded by Śakra, overwhelmed with fear·स स्मरो मुनिशार्दूल (sa smaro muniśārdūla) — that Smara, O tiger among sagesthat Smara, O tiger among sages·स्वप्रयासे निरर्थके (svaprayāse nirarthake) — his own effort having proved fruitlesshis own effort having proved fruitless

कामेन सुस्मृता देवाः (kāmena susmṛtā devāḥ) — the gods, well remembered by Kāmathe gods, well remembered by Kāma·शक्राद्यास्ते मुनीश्वर (śakrādyāste munīśvara) — those headed by Śakra, O lord of sagesthose headed by Śakra, O lord of sages·आययुः सकलास्ते हि (āyayuḥ sakalāste hi) — all of them indeed cameall of them indeed came·शंभुं नत्वा च तुष्टुवुः (śaṃbhuṃ natvā ca tuṣṭuvuḥ) — and, bowing to Śambhu, praised himand, bowing to Śambhu, praised him

स्तुतिं कुर्वत्सु देवेषु (stutiṃ kurvatsu deveṣu) — while the gods were offering praisewhile the gods were offering praise·क्रुद्धस्याति हरस्य हि (kruddhasyāti harasya hi) — of Hara, who was exceedingly enragedof Hara, who was exceedingly enraged·तृतीयात्तस्य नेत्राद्वै (tṛtīyāttasya netrādvai) — from his third eye indeedfrom his third eye indeed·निस्ससार ततो महान् (nissasāra tato mahān) — a great [fire] then issued fortha great [fire] then issued forth

ललाटमध्यगात्तस्मात् (lalāṭamadhyagāttasmāt) — from that [eye] set in the middle of his foreheadfrom that [eye] set in the middle of his forehead·सवह्निर्द्रुतसम्भवः (savahnirdrutasambhavaḥ) — a flame, swiftly borna flame, swiftly born·जज्वालोर्ध्वशिखो दीप्तः (jajvālordhvaśikho dīptaḥ) — blazed, its crest turned upward, brilliantblazed, its crest turned upward, brilliant·प्रलयाग्निसमप्रभः (pralayāgnisamaprabhaḥ) — radiant like the fire of dissolutionradiant like the fire of dissolution

उत्पत्य गगने तूर्णं (utpatya gagane tūrṇaṃ) — having leapt up swiftly into the skyhaving leapt up swiftly into the sky·निपत्य धरणीतले (nipatya dharaṇītale) — and having fallen to the surface of the earthand having fallen to the surface of the earth·भ्रामं भ्रामं स्वपरितः (bhrāmaṃ bhrāmaṃ svaparitaḥ) — whirling, whirling, round about itselfwhirling, whirling, round about itself·पपात मेदिनीं परि (papāta medinīṃ pari) — it fell upon the earthit fell upon the earth

भस्मसात्कृतवान्साधो (bhasmasātkṛtavānsādho) — it reduced to ashes, O good oneit reduced to ashes, O good one·मदनं तावदेव हि (madanaṃ tāvadeva hi) — Madana, in that very moment indeedMadana, in that very moment indeed·यावच्च मरुतां वाचः (yāvacca marutāṃ vācaḥ) — even while the words of the godseven while the words of the gods·क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतामिति (kṣamyatāṃ kṣamyatāmiti) — "let there be forgiveness, let there be forgiveness""let there be forgiveness, let there be forgiveness"

हते तस्मिन्स्मरे वीरे (hate tasminsmare vīre) — when that hero Smara was slainwhen that hero Smara was slain·देवा दुःखमुपागताः (devā duḥkhamupāgatāḥ) — the gods fell into sorrowthe gods fell into sorrow·रुरुदुर्विह्वलाश्चाति (rurudurvihvalāścāti) — and, exceedingly distressed, they weptand, exceedingly distressed, they wept·क्रोशंतः किमभूदिति (krośaṃtaḥ kimabhūditi) — crying out, "what has happened?"crying out, "what has happened?"

श्वेताङ्का विकृतात्मा च (śvetāṅkā vikṛtātmā ca) — her form turned pale, and her spirit shakenher form turned pale, and her spirit shaken·गिरिराजसुता तदा (girirājasutā tadā) — the daughter of the king of mountains, thenthe daughter of the king of mountains, then·जगाम मंदिरं स्वं च (jagāma maṃdiraṃ svaṃ ca) — went to her own dwellingwent to her own dwelling·समादाय सखीजनम् (samādāya sakhījanam) — taking her circle of companions with hertaking her circle of companions with her

क्षणमात्रं रतिस्तत्र (kṣaṇamātraṃ ratistatra) — for a mere moment, Rati therefor a mere moment, Rati there·विसंज्ञा साभवत्तदा (visaṃjñā sābhavattadā) — became unconscious thenbecame unconscious then·भर्तृमृत्युजदुःखेन (bhartṛmṛtyujaduḥkhena) — by the sorrow born of her husband's deathby the sorrow born of her husband's death·पतिता सा मृता इव (patitā sā mṛtā iva) — she fell, as if deadshe fell, as if dead

जातायां चैव संज्ञायां (jātāyāṃ caiva saṃjñāyāṃ) — and when consciousness had returnedand when consciousness had returned·रतिरत्यंतविह्वला (ratiratyaṃtavihvalā) — Rati, utterly overwhelmedRati, utterly overwhelmed·विललाप तदा तत्रो (vilalāpa tadā tatro) — lamented there thenlamented there then·च्चरन्ती विविधं वचः (ccarantī vividhaṃ vacaḥ) — uttering various wordsuttering various words

किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि (kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi) — what shall I do, where shall I gowhat shall I do, where shall I go·किं कृतं दैवतैरिह (kiṃ kṛtaṃ daivatairiha) — what have the gods done herewhat have the gods done here·मत्स्वामिनं समाहूय (matsvāminaṃ samāhūya) — having summoned my own husbandhaving summoned my own husband·नाशयामासुरुद्धतम् (nāśayāmāsuruddhatam) — they have destroyed him, so proud and mightythey have destroyed him, so proud and mighty

हा हा नाथ स्मर स्वामिन् (hā hā nātha smara svāmin) — alas, alas, my lord! Smara! My husband!alas, alas, my lord! Smara! My husband!·प्राणप्रिय सुखप्रद (prāṇapriya sukhaprada) — dear as my own life, giver of happinessdear as my own life, giver of happiness·इदं तु किमभूदत्र (idaṃ tu kimabhūdatra) — what has happened here nowwhat has happened here now·हा हा प्रिय प्रियेति च (hā hā priya priyeti ca) — alas, alas, beloved, beloved!alas, alas, beloved, beloved!

इत्थं विलपती सा तु (itthaṃ vilapatī sā tu) — thus lamenting, shethus lamenting, she·वदन्ती बहुधा वचः (vadantī bahudhā vacaḥ) — uttering many kinds of wordsuttering many kinds of words·हस्तौ पादौ तदास्फाल्य (hastau pādau tadāsphālya) — struck her hands and feet thenstruck her hands and feet then·केशानत्रोटयत्तदा (keśānatroṭayattadā) — and tore at her hair thenand tore at her hair then

तद्विलापं तदा श्रुत्वा (tadvilāpaṃ tadā śrutvā) — hearing that lament thenhearing that lament then·तत्र सर्वे वनेचराः (tatra sarve vanecarāḥ) — all the forest-dwellers thereall the forest-dwellers there·अभवन्दुःखिताः सर्वे (abhavanduḥkhitāḥ sarve) — all of them became grievedall of them became grieved·स्थावरा अपि नारद (sthāvarā api nārada) — even the immovable beings, O Nāradaeven the immovable beings, O Nārada

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र (etasminnantare tatra) — meanwhile, at this pointmeanwhile, at this point·देवाः शक्रादयोऽखिलाः (devāḥ śakrādayo'khilāḥ) — all the gods, headed by Śakraall the gods, headed by Śakra·रतिमूचुः समाश्वास्य (ratimūcuḥ samāśvāsya) — consoled Rati and spokeconsoled Rati and spoke·संस्मरन्तो महेश्वरम् (saṃsmaranto maheśvaram) — while remembering Maheśvarawhile remembering Maheśvara

किंचिद्भस्म गृहीत्वा तु (kiṃcidbhasma gṛhītvā tu) — taking a little of this ashtaking a little of this ash·रक्ष यत्नाद्भयं त्यज (rakṣa yatnādbhayaṃ tyaja) — guard it carefully, abandon fearguard it carefully, abandon fear·जीवयिष्यति स स्वामी (jīvayiṣyati sa svāmī) — that lord [Śiva] will bring him to lifethat lord [Śiva] will bring him to life·लप्स्यसे त्वं पुनः प्रियम् (lapsyase tvaṃ punaḥ priyam) — you will regain your beloved againyou will regain your beloved again

सुखदाता न कोऽप्यस्ति (sukhadātā na ko'pyasti) — there is no one at all who gives happinessthere is no one at all who gives happiness·दुःखदाता न कश्चन (duḥkhadātā na kaścana) — nor anyone who gives sorrownor anyone who gives sorrow·सर्वोऽपि स्वकृतं भुंक्ते (sarvo'pi svakṛtaṃ bhuṃkte) — everyone reaps his own doingeveryone reaps his own doing·देवान् शोचसि वै वृथा (devān śocasi vai vṛthā) — you grieve the gods, in vain indeedyou grieve the gods, in vain indeed

इत्याश्वास्य रतिं देवाः (ityāśvāsya ratiṃ devāḥ) — having thus consoled Rati, the godshaving thus consoled Rati, the gods·सर्वे शिवमुपागताः (sarve śivamupāgatāḥ) — all approached Śivaall approached Śiva·सुप्रसाद्य शिवं भक्त्या (suprasādya śivaṃ bhaktyā) — having well pleased Śiva with devotionhaving well pleased Śiva with devotion·वचनं चेदमब्रुवन् (vacanaṃ cedamabruvan) — and spoke this wordand spoke this word

भगवन् श्रूयतामेतत् (bhagavan śrūyatāmetat) — O Lord, let this be heardO Lord, let this be heard·वचनं नः शुभं प्रभो (vacanaṃ naḥ śubhaṃ prabho) — this auspicious word of ours, O Masterthis auspicious word of ours, O Master·कृपां कृत्वा महेशान (kṛpāṃ kṛtvā maheśāna) — showing mercy, O Maheśānashowing mercy, O Maheśāna·शरणागतवत्सल (śaraṇāgatavatsala) — O fond protector of those who take refugeO fond protector of those who take refuge

सुविचारय सुप्रीत्या (suvicāraya suprītyā) — consider well, with great affectionconsider well, with great affection·कृतिं कामस्य शंकर (kṛtiṃ kāmasya śaṃkara) — the deed of Kāma, O Śaṅkarathe deed of Kāma, O Śaṅkara·कामेनैतत्कृतं यत्र (kāmenaitatkṛtaṃ yatra) — this that was done by Kāma, whereinthis that was done by Kāma, wherein·न स्वार्थं तन्महेश्वर (na svārthaṃ tanmaheśvara) — there was no self-interest of his, O Maheśvarathere was no self-interest of his, O Maheśvara

दुष्टेन पीडितैर्देवैः (duṣṭena pīḍitairdevaiḥ) — by the gods, afflicted by the wicked oneby the gods, afflicted by the wicked one·तारकेणाखिलैर्विभो (tārakeṇākhilairvibho) — by Tāraka, all of them, O Lordby Tāraka, all of them, O Lord·कर्म तत्कारितं नाथ (karma tatkāritaṃ nātha) — that deed was caused [by them], O Masterthat deed was caused [by them], O Master·नान्यथा विद्धि शंकर (nānyathā viddhi śaṃkara) — do not think otherwise, O Śaṅkarado not think otherwise, O Śaṅkara

रतिरेकाकिनी देव (ratirekākinī deva) — Rati, alone, O GodRati, alone, O God·विलापं दुःखिता सती (vilāpaṃ duḥkhitā satī) — grief-stricken, lamentsgrief-stricken, laments·करोति गिरिश त्वं च (karoti giriśa tvaṃ ca) — she does so, O Giriśa, and youshe does so, O Giriśa, and you·तामाश्वासय सर्वद (tāmāśvāsaya sarvada) — do console her, O giver of alldo console her, O giver of all

संहारं कर्तुकामोऽसि (saṃhāraṃ kartukāmo'si) — it would seem you wish to bring about destructionit would seem you wish to bring about destruction·क्रोधेनानेन शंकर (krodhenānena śaṃkara) — by this anger, O Śaṅkaraby this anger, O Śaṅkara·दैवतैः सह सर्वेषां (daivataiḥ saha sarveṣāṃ) — of all, together with the godsof all, together with the gods·हतवांस्तं यदि स्मरम् (hatavāṃstaṃ yadi smaram) — if you have thus slain Smaraif you have thus slain Smara

दुःखं तस्या रतेर्दृष्ट्वा (duḥkhaṃ tasyā raterdṛṣṭvā) — seeing this Rati's sorrowseeing this Rati's sorrow·नष्टप्रायाश्च देवताः (naṣṭaprāyāśca devatāḥ) — the gods too have become as if undonethe gods too have become as if undone·तस्मात्त्वया च कर्तव्यं (tasmāttvayā ca kartavyaṃ) — therefore it should be done by youtherefore it should be done by you·रत्याः शोकापनोदनम् (ratyāḥ śokāpanodanam) — the removal of Rati's griefthe removal of Rati's grief

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तेषां (ityākarṇya vacasteṣāṃ) — hearing their wordshearing their words·प्रसन्नो भगवान् शिवः (prasanno bhagavān śivaḥ) — the blessed Śiva became pleasedthe blessed Śiva became pleased·देवानां सकलानां च (devānāṃ sakalānāṃ ca) — and to all the godsand to all the gods·वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् (vacanaṃ cedamabravīt) — he spoke this wordhe spoke this word

देवाश्च ऋषयः सर्वे (devāśca ṛṣayaḥ sarve) — O gods and all the sagesO gods and all the sages·मद्वचः शृणुतादरात् (madvacaḥ śṛṇutādarāt) — hear my word with respecthear my word with respect·मत्कोपेन च यज्जातं (matkopena ca yajjātaṃ) — and what has come about through my wrathand what has come about through my wrath·तत्तथा नान्यथा भवेत् (tattathā nānyathā bhavet) — shall remain so, and not otherwiseshall remain so, and not otherwise

अनङ्गस्तावदेव स्यात् (anaṅgastāvadeva syāt) — shall remain bodiless only so longshall remain bodiless only so long·कामो रतिपतिः प्रभुः (kāmo ratipatiḥ prabhuḥ) — Kāma, lord and husband of RatiKāma, lord and husband of Rati·यावच्चावतरेत्कृष्णो (yāvaccāvataretkṛṣṇo) — until Kṛṣṇa descendsuntil Kṛṣṇa descends·धरण्यां रुक्मिणीपतिः (dharaṇyāṃ rukmiṇīpatiḥ) — upon the earth, as Rukmiṇī's husbandupon the earth, as Rukmiṇī's husband

द्वारकायां यदा स्थित्वा (dvārakāyāṃ yadā sthitvā) — when, dwelling in Dvārakāwhen, dwelling in Dvārakā·पुत्रानुत्पादयिष्यति (putrānutpādayiṣyati) — he shall beget sonshe shall beget sons·तदा कृष्णस्तु रुक्मिण्यां (tadā kṛṣṇastu rukmiṇyāṃ) — then Kṛṣṇa, in Rukmiṇīthen Kṛṣṇa, in Rukmiṇī·काममुत्पादयिष्यति (kāmamutpādayiṣyati) — shall beget Kāmashall beget Kāma

प्रद्युम्नं नाम तस्यैव (pradyumnaṃ nāma tasyaiva) — Pradyumna, indeed, will be his namePradyumna, indeed, will be his name·भविष्यति न संशयः (bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ) — it will be so, there is no doubtit will be so, there is no doubt·जातमात्रं तु तं पुत्रं (jātamātraṃ tu taṃ putraṃ) — but that son, as soon as bornbut that son, as soon as born·शंबरः संहरिष्यति (śaṃbaraḥ saṃhariṣyati) — Śambara shall carry offŚambara shall carry off

हत्वा प्रास्य समुद्रं तं (hatvā prāsya samudraṃ taṃ) — having struck him down and cast him into the oceanhaving struck him down and cast him into the ocean·शंबरो दानवोत्तमः (śaṃbaro dānavottamaḥ) — Śambara, foremost of demonsŚambara, foremost of demons·मृतं ज्ञात्वा वृथा मूढो (mṛtaṃ jñātvā vṛthā mūḍho) — thinking him dead, foolishly, in vainthinking him dead, foolishly, in vain·नगरं स्वं गमिष्यति (nagaraṃ svaṃ gamiṣyati) — shall return to his own cityshall return to his own city

तावच्च नगरं तस्य (tāvacca nagaraṃ tasya) — and until then, in his [Śambara's] cityand until then, in his [Śambara's] city·रते स्थेयं यथासुखम् (rate stheyaṃ yathāsukham) — you, Rati, should dwell in comfortyou, Rati, should dwell in comfort·तत्रैव स्वपतेः प्राप्तिः (tatraiva svapateḥ prāptiḥ) — there itself the attainment of your own husbandthere itself the attainment of your own husband·प्रद्युम्नस्य भविष्यति (pradyumnasya bhaviṣyati) — namely Pradyumna, shall come to passnamely Pradyumna, shall come to pass

तत्र कामो मिलित्वा तं (tatra kāmo militvā taṃ) — there Kāma, having met himthere Kāma, having met him·हत्वा शम्बरमाहवे (hatvā śambaramāhave) — and having slain Śambara in battleand having slain Śambara in battle·भविष्यति सुखी देवाः (bhaviṣyati sukhī devāḥ) — shall be happy, O godsshall be happy, O gods·प्रद्युम्नाख्यः स्वकामिनीम् (pradyumnākhyaḥ svakāminīm) — [united] with his own beloved, he who is called Pradyumna[united] with his own beloved, he who is called Pradyumna

हे देवाः सुप्रसन्नोऽस्मि (he devāḥ suprasanno'smi) — O gods, I am well pleasedO gods, I am well pleased·जीवयिष्यामि चान्तरे (jīvayiṣyāmi cāntare) — and I shall bring him to life within [every heart]and I shall bring him to life within [every heart]·कामः स मद्गणो भूत्वा (kāmaḥ sa madgaṇo bhūtvā) — that Kāma, having become my attendantthat Kāma, having become my attendant·विहरिष्यति नित्यशः (vihariṣyati nityaśaḥ) — shall wander forevershall wander forever
