Chapter Eighteen·The Disturbance Wrought by Kāma·Verses 1–45
Kāma, still deluded by Śiva's own māyā without knowing it, arrives at Śiva's hermitage and unleashes spring out of season — flowers bloom, cuckoos sing, moonlight kindles desire in every creature, even in the unconscious, until the ascetics of the forest can bear it no longer. Śiva marvels at this untimely wonder but continues his fierce austerity unmoved. Kāma, with Rati at his side, can find no opening in Śiva's perfect meditation, until Pārvatī herself arrives with her friends to offer worship; her presence alone makes Śiva pause his meditation for an instant, and in that instant Kāma looses his arrow. Struck, Śiva breaks into a long, joyous description of Pārvatī's beauty, and very nearly reaches to embrace her — until, remembering the boon he once granted Brahmā, he catches himself, falls silent, and turns sharply from desire to self-rebuke, casting off even his meditation-seat in dispassion, unwilling to let the lord of all fall prey to passion.

Displaying her own limbs, and glancing again and again with lovely looks, Śivā, O sage, broke into a gentle smile out of great delight.

Having reflected thus for a mere instant, and having then paid due honor to Girijā, that great yogī, now awakened and wholly detached, spoke as follows.

Having thus attained dispassion, the Self of all, the supreme lord, forbade even that resting-place — thinking, "should I fall, here of all places?"
