आगतस्तत्क्षणात्कामः (āgatastatkṣaṇātkāmaḥ) — that very instant Kāma arrivedthat very instant Kāma arrived·सवसन्तो रतिप्रियः (savasanto ratipriyaḥ) — together with Vasanta, dear to Ratitogether with Vasanta, dear to Rati·सावलेपो युतो रत्या (sāvalepo yuto ratyā) — full of pride, accompanied by Ratifull of pride, accompanied by Rati·त्रैलोक्यविजयी प्रभुः (trailokyavijayī prabhuḥ) — the lord who conquers the three worldsthe lord who conquers the three worlds

प्रणामं च ततः कृत्वा (praṇāmaṃ ca tataḥ kṛtvā) — then, having bowedthen, having bowed·स्थित्वा तत्पुरतः स्मरः (sthitvā tatpurataḥ smaraḥ) — Smara, standing before himSmara, standing before him·महोन्नतमनास्तात (mahonnatamanāstāta) — O dear one, of most exalted mindO dear one, of most exalted mind·साञ्जलिः शक्रमब्रवीत् (sāñjaliḥ śakramabravīt) — with joined hands, spoke to Indrawith joined hands, spoke to Indra

किं कार्यं ते समुत्पन्नं (kiṃ kāryaṃ te samutpannaṃ) — what task has arisen for youwhat task has arisen for you·स्मृतोऽहं केन हेतुना (smṛto'haṃ kena hetunā) — for what reason have I been rememberedfor what reason have I been remembered·तत् त्वं कथय देवेश (tat tvaṃ kathaya deveśa) — tell me that, O lord of the godstell me that, O lord of the gods·तत्कर्तुं समुपागतः (tatkartuṃ samupāgataḥ) — I have come here to accomplish itI have come here to accomplish it

तच्छुत्वा वचनं तस्य (tacchutvā vacanaṃ tasya) — having heard that speech of hishaving heard that speech of his·कंदर्पस्य सुरेश्वरः (kaṃdarpasya sureśvaraḥ) — of Kandarpa, the lord of the gods [Indra]of Kandarpa, the lord of the gods [Indra]·उवाच वचनं प्रीत्या (uvāca vacanaṃ prītyā) — spoke these words with affectionspoke these words with affection·युक्तं युक्तमिति स्तुवन् (yuktaṃ yuktamiti stuvan) — praising him, saying, 'well said, well said'praising him, saying, 'well said, well said'

तव साधु समारम्भो (tava sādhu samārambho) — excellent is your resolveexcellent is your resolve·यन्मे कार्यमुपस्थितम् (yanme kāryamupasthitam) — regarding this task of mine that has come upregarding this task of mine that has come up·तत्कर्तुमुद्यतोऽसि त्वं (tatkartumudyato'si tvaṃ) — you stand ready to accomplish ityou stand ready to accomplish it·धन्योऽसि मकरध्वज (dhanyo'si makaradhvaja) — you are blessed, O Makaradhvajayou are blessed, O Makaradhvaja

प्रस्तुतं शृणु मद्वाक्यं (prastutaṃ śṛṇu madvākyaṃ) — hear this word of mine, now spokenhear this word of mine, now spoken·कथयामि तवाग्रतः (kathayāmi tavāgrataḥ) — I speak it before youI speak it before you·मदीयं चैव यत्कार्यं (madīyaṃ caiva yatkāryaṃ) — whatever task is minewhatever task is mine·त्वदीयं तन्न चान्यथा (tvadīyaṃ tanna cānyathā) — is indeed yours, and not otherwiseis indeed yours, and not otherwise

मित्राणि मम सन्त्येव (mitrāṇi mama santyeva) — I do indeed have friendsI do indeed have friends·बहूनि सुमहान्ति च (bahūni sumahānti ca) — many, and very great ones toomany, and very great ones too·परं तु स्मर सन्मित्र (paraṃ tu smara sanmitra) — but, O Smara, O true friendbut, O Smara, O true friend·त्वत्तुल्यं न हि कुत्रचित् (tvattulyaṃ na hi kutracit) — none is equal to you anywherenone is equal to you anywhere

जयार्थं मे द्वयं तात (jayārthaṃ me dvayaṃ tāta) — O dear one, for my victory there are twoO dear one, for my victory there are two·निर्मितं वज्रमुत्तमम् (nirmitaṃ vajramuttamam) — — the excellent thunderbolt was fashioned— the excellent thunderbolt was fashioned·वज्रं च निष्फलं स्याद्वै (vajraṃ ca niṣphalaṃ syādvai) — and the thunderbolt may indeed become fruitlessand the thunderbolt may indeed become fruitless·त्वं तु नैव कदाचन (tvaṃ tu naiva kadācana) — but you, never at any timebut you, never at any time

यतो हितं प्रजायेत (yato hitaṃ prajāyeta) — from whom benefit is bornfrom whom benefit is born·ततः को नु प्रियः परः (tataḥ ko nu priyaḥ paraḥ) — who indeed is dearer than that onewho indeed is dearer than that one·तस्मान्मित्रवरस्त्वं हि (tasmānmitravarastvaṃ hi) — therefore you, O best of friendstherefore you, O best of friends·मत्कार्यं कर्तुमर्हसि (matkāryaṃ kartumarhasi) — are worthy to accomplish my taskare worthy to accomplish my task

मम दुःखं समुत्पन्नम् (mama duḥkhaṃ samutpannam) — my sorrow has arisenmy sorrow has arisen·असाध्यं चापि कालजम् (asādhyaṃ cāpi kālajam) — incurable, and born of timeincurable, and born of time·केनापि नैव तच्छक्यं (kenāpi naiva tacchakyaṃ) — by no one at all is it possibleby no one at all is it possible·दूरीकर्तुं त्वया विना (dūrīkartuṃ tvayā vinā) — to remove, except by youto remove, except by you

दातुः परीक्षा दुर्भिक्षे (dātuḥ parīkṣā durbhikṣe) — the test of a giver comes in faminethe test of a giver comes in famine·रणे शूरस्य जायते (raṇe śūrasya jāyate) — of the brave, it arises in battleof the brave, it arises in battle·आपत्काले तु मित्रस्य (āpatkāle tu mitrasya) — of a friend, in a time of calamityof a friend, in a time of calamity·अशक्तौ स्त्रीणां कुलस्य हि (aśaktau strīṇāṃ kulasya hi) — and, in helplessness, indeed of women and of familyand, in helplessness, indeed of women and of family

विनये संकटे प्राप्ते (vinaye saṃkaṭe prāpte) — in humility, when danger has arrivedin humility, when danger has arrived·अवितथस्य परोक्षतः (avitathasya parokṣataḥ) — of the truthful one, in his absenceof the truthful one, in his absence·सुस्नेहस्य तथा तात (susnehasya tathā tāta) — and likewise, O dear one, of deep affectionand likewise, O dear one, of deep affection·नान्यथा सत्यमीरितम् (nānyathā satyamīritam) — this is declared as truth, not otherwisethis is declared as truth, not otherwise

प्राप्तायां वै ममापत्तौ (prāptāyāṃ vai mamāpattau) — now that my calamity has indeed comenow that my calamity has indeed come·अवार्यायां परेण हि (avāryāyāṃ pareṇa hi) — one that cannot be averted by anotherone that cannot be averted by another·परीक्षा च त्वदीयाद्य (parīkṣā ca tvadīyādya) — and your test, todayand your test, today·मित्रवर्य भविष्यति (mitravarya bhaviṣyati) — O best of friends, will take placeO best of friends, will take place

न केवलं मदीयं च (na kevalaṃ madīyaṃ ca) — it is not mine aloneit is not mine alone·कार्यमस्ति सुखावहम् (kāryamasti sukhāvaham) — this task that brings happinessthis task that brings happiness·किं तु सर्वसुरादीनां (kiṃ tu sarvasurādīnāṃ) — but rather, of all the gods and othersbut rather, of all the gods and others·कार्यमेतन्न संशयः (kāryametanna saṃśayaḥ) — this is their task — there is no doubtthis is their task — there is no doubt

इत्येतन्मघवद्वाक्यं (ityetanmaghavadvākyaṃ) — this speech of Maghavan [Indra]this speech of Maghavan [Indra]·श्रुत्वा तु मकरध्वजः (śrutvā tu makaradhvajaḥ) — having heard, Makaradhvaja [Kāma]having heard, Makaradhvaja [Kāma]·उवाच प्रेमगंभीरं वाक्यं (uvāca premagaṃbhīraṃ vākyaṃ) — spoke a word deep with lovespoke a word deep with love·सुस्मितपूर्वकम् (susmitapūrvakam) — preceded by a gentle smilepreceded by a gentle smile

किमर्थमित्थं वदसि (kimarthamitthaṃ vadasi) — why do you speak in this waywhy do you speak in this way·नोत्तरं वच्म्यहं तव (nottaraṃ vacmyahaṃ tava) — I will give you no replyI will give you no reply·उपकृत्कृत्रिमं लोके दृश्यते (upakṛtkṛtrimaṃ loke dṛśyate) — in the world, a benefactor's pretence is what is seenin the world, a benefactor's pretence is what is seen·कथ्यते न च (kathyate na ca) — but [true help] is not spoken ofbut [true help] is not spoken of

सङ्कटे बहु यो ब्रूते (saṅkaṭe bahu yo brūte) — one who, in a crisis, speaks muchone who, in a crisis, speaks much·स किं कार्यं करिष्यति (sa kiṃ kāryaṃ kariṣyati) — what task will he accomplishwhat task will he accomplish·तथापि च महाराज (tathāpi ca mahārāja) — yet still, O great kingyet still, O great king·कथयामि शृणु प्रभो (kathayāmi śṛṇu prabho) — I shall speak; listen, O lordI shall speak; listen, O lord

पदं ते कर्षितुं यो वै (padaṃ te karṣituṃ yo vai) — he who, to drag away your positionhe who, to drag away your position·तपस्तपति दारुणम् (tapastapati dāruṇam) — performs dreadful austerityperforms dreadful austerity·पातयिष्याम्यहं तं च (pātayiṣyāmyahaṃ taṃ ca) — him I shall cast downhim I shall cast down·शत्रुं ते मित्र सर्वथा (śatruṃ te mitra sarvathā) — your enemy, O friend, utterlyyour enemy, O friend, utterly

क्षणेन भ्रंशयिष्यामि (kṣaṇena bhraṃśayiṣyāmi) — in a moment I shall cause him to fallin a moment I shall cause him to fall·कटाक्षेण वरस्त्रियाः (kaṭākṣeṇa varastriyāḥ) — by the sidelong glance of a beautiful womanby the sidelong glance of a beautiful woman·देवर्षिदानवादींश्च (devarṣidānavādīṃśca) — be he a god, sage, or demon, and the likebe he a god, sage, or demon, and the like·नराणां गणना न मे (narāṇāṃ gaṇanā na me) — as for men, I take no account of themas for men, I take no account of them

वज्रं तिष्ठतु दूरे वै (vajraṃ tiṣṭhatu dūre vai) — let the thunderbolt stay far away indeedlet the thunderbolt stay far away indeed·शस्त्राण्यन्यान्यनेकशः (śastrāṇyanyānyanekaśaḥ) — and the many other weaponsand the many other weapons·किं ते कार्यं करिष्यन्ति (kiṃ te kāryaṃ kariṣyanti) — what will they accomplish for youwhat will they accomplish for you·मयि मित्र उपस्थिते (mayi mitra upasthite) — when I, O friend, am presentwhen I, O friend, am present

ब्रह्माणं वा हरिं वापि (brahmāṇaṃ vā hariṃ vāpi) — Brahmā, or even HariBrahmā, or even Hari·भ्रष्टं कुर्यां न संशयः (bhraṣṭaṃ kuryāṃ na saṃśayaḥ) — I could make fall — there is no doubtI could make fall — there is no doubt·अन्येषां गणना नास्ति (anyeṣāṃ gaṇanā nāsti) — of others there is no reckoning at allof others there is no reckoning at all·पातयेयं हरं त्वपि (pātayeyaṃ haraṃ tvapi) — I could bring down even HaraI could bring down even Hara

पञ्चैव मृदवो बाणाः (pañcaiva mṛdavo bāṇāḥ) — my arrows are but five, and softmy arrows are but five, and soft·ते च पुष्पमया मम (te ca puṣpamayā mama) — and they, mine, are made of flowersand they, mine, are made of flowers·चापस्त्रिधा पुष्पमयः (cāpastridhā puṣpamayaḥ) — the bow, threefold, is made of flowersthe bow, threefold, is made of flowers·शिञ्जिनी भ्रमरार्जिता (śiñjinī bhramarārjitā) — its string is won/formed of beesits string is won/formed of bees

बलं सुदयिता मे हि (balaṃ sudayitā me hi) — such is my strength; she who is my most belovedsuch is my strength; she who is my most beloved·वसंतः सचिवः स्मृतः (vasaṃtaḥ sacivaḥ smṛtaḥ) — Vasanta is remembered as my ministerVasanta is remembered as my minister·अहं पञ्चबलो देव (ahaṃ pañcabalo deva) — I, O lord, am possessed of five powersI, O lord, am possessed of five powers·मित्रं मम सुधानिधिः (mitraṃ mama sudhānidhiḥ) — my friend is Sudhānidhi [the moon]my friend is Sudhānidhi [the moon]

सेनाधिपश्च शृङ्गारो (senādhipaśca śṛṅgāro) — and Śṛṅgāra [erotic sentiment] is my commanderand Śṛṅgāra [erotic sentiment] is my commander·हावभावाश्च सैनिकाः (hāvabhāvāśca sainikāḥ) — and the amorous gestures are my soldiersand the amorous gestures are my soldiers·सर्वे मे मृदवः शक्र (sarve me mṛdavaḥ śakra) — all of mine, O Indra, are gentleall of mine, O Indra, are gentle·अहं चापि तथाविधः (ahaṃ cāpi tathāvidhaḥ) — and I too am of that same natureand I too am of that same nature

यद्येन पूर्यते कार्यं (yadyena pūryate kāryaṃ) — whatever task is accomplished by whatever meanswhatever task is accomplished by whatever means·धीमांस्तत्तेन योजयेत् (dhīmāṃstattena yojayet) — a wise man should employ that by that meansa wise man should employ that by that means·मम योग्यं तु यत्कार्यं (mama yogyaṃ tu yatkāryaṃ) — whatever task is indeed fitting for mewhatever task is indeed fitting for me·सर्वं तन्मे नियोजय (sarvaṃ tanme niyojaya) — assign all of that to meassign all of that to me

इत्येवं तु वचस्तस्य (ityevaṃ tu vacastasya) — having heard these very words of hishaving heard these very words of his·श्रुत्वा शक्रः सुहर्षितः (śrutvā śakraḥ suharṣitaḥ) — Indra, greatly delightedIndra, greatly delighted·उवाच प्रणमन्वाचा (uvāca praṇamanvācā) — spoke, bowing, with his voicespoke, bowing, with his voice·कामं कांतासुखावहम् (kāmaṃ kāṃtāsukhāvaham) — to Kāma, bringer of joy to beloved womento Kāma, bringer of joy to beloved women

यत्कार्यं मनसोद्दिष्टं (yatkāryaṃ manasoddiṣṭaṃ) — the task that has been pointed out in [my] mindthe task that has been pointed out in [my] mind·मया तात मनोभव (mayā tāta manobhava) — by me, O dear one, O Manobhavaby me, O dear one, O Manobhava·कर्तुं तत्त्वं समर्थोऽसि (kartuṃ tattvaṃ samartho'si) — you alone are capable of accomplishing ityou alone are capable of accomplishing it·नान्यस्मात्तस्य सम्भवः (nānyasmāttasya sambhavaḥ) — from another it cannot come aboutfrom another it cannot come about

शृणु काम प्रवक्ष्यामि (śṛṇu kāma pravakṣyāmi) — listen, O Kāma, I shall telllisten, O Kāma, I shall tell·यथार्थं मित्रसत्तम (yathārthaṃ mitrasattama) — truly, O best of friendstruly, O best of friends·यदर्थे च स्पृहा जाता (yadarthe ca spṛhā jātā) — and that for whose sake the longing has arisenand that for whose sake the longing has arisen·तव चाद्य मनोभव (tava cādya manobhava) — for you, today, O Manobhavafor you, today, O Manobhava

तारकाख्यो महादैत्यो (tārakākhyo mahādaityo) — the great demon named Tārakathe great demon named Tāraka·ब्रह्मणो वरमद्भुतम् (brahmaṇo varamadbhutam) — a wondrous boon from Brahmāa wondrous boon from Brahmā·अभूतजेयः संप्राप्य (abhūtajeyaḥ saṃprāpya) — having obtained [it], has become unconqueredhaving obtained [it], has become unconquered·सर्वेषामपि दुःखदः (sarveṣāmapi duḥkhadaḥ) — a bringer of sorrow to all as wella bringer of sorrow to all as well

तेन संपीड्यते लोको (tena saṃpīḍyate loko) — by him the world is oppressedby him the world is oppressed·नष्टा धर्मा ह्यनेकशः (naṣṭā dharmā hyanekaśaḥ) — many kinds of righteousness have indeed been destroyedmany kinds of righteousness have indeed been destroyed·दुःखिता निर्जराः सर्वे (duḥkhitā nirjarāḥ sarve) — all the immortals are sorrowfulall the immortals are sorrowful·ऋषयश्च तथाखिलाः (ṛṣayaśca tathākhilāḥ) — and likewise all the sagesand likewise all the sages

देवैश्च सकलैस्तेन (devaiśca sakalaistena) — and by all the gods, against himand by all the gods, against him·कृतं युद्धं यथाबलम् (kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ yathābalam) — battle was waged, according to their strengthbattle was waged, according to their strength·सर्वेषां चायुधान्यत्र (sarveṣāṃ cāyudhānyatra) — and there, the weapons of alland there, the weapons of all·विफलान्यभवन्पुरा (viphalānyabhavanpurā) — became fruitless previouslybecame fruitless previously

भग्नः पाशो जलेशस्य (bhagnaḥ pāśo jaleśasya) — the noose of the lord of the waters [Varuṇa] was brokenthe noose of the lord of the waters [Varuṇa] was broken·हरिचक्रं सुदर्शनम् (haricakraṃ sudarśanam) — and Hari's discus, Sudarśanaand Hari's discus, Sudarśana·तत्कुण्ठितमभूत्तस्य (tatkuṇṭhitamabhūttasya) — that became blunted, upon histhat became blunted, upon his·कण्ठे क्षिप्तं च विष्णुना (kaṇṭhe kṣiptaṃ ca viṣṇunā) — neck, when hurled by Viṣṇuneck, when hurled by Viṣṇu

एतस्य मरणं प्रोक्तं (etasya maraṇaṃ proktaṃ) — the death of this one has been declaredthe death of this one has been declared·प्रजेशेन दुरात्मनः (prajeśena durātmanaḥ) — by the lord of creatures, of [this] evil-souled oneby the lord of creatures, of [this] evil-souled one·शम्भोर्वीर्योद्भवाद्बालान् (śambhorvīryodbhavādbālān) — [to come] from a boy born of Śambhu's seed[to come] from a boy born of Śambhu's seed·महायोगीश्वरस्य हि (mahāyogīśvarasya hi) — of the great lord of yogis, indeedof the great lord of yogis, indeed

एतत्कार्यं त्वया साधु (etatkāryaṃ tvayā sādhu) — this task, well, by youthis task, well, by you·कर्तव्यं सुप्रयत्नतः (kartavyaṃ suprayatnataḥ) — must be accomplished, with the utmost effortmust be accomplished, with the utmost effort·ततः स्यान्मित्रवर्याति (tataḥ syānmitravaryāti) — then, O best of friends, indeed there shall bethen, O best of friends, indeed there shall be·देवानां नः परं सुखम् (devānāṃ naḥ paraṃ sukham) — for us gods, the highest happinessfor us gods, the highest happiness

ममापि विहितं तस्मात् (mamāpi vihitaṃ tasmāt) — for me too, therefore, this is ordainedfor me too, therefore, this is ordained·सर्वलोकसुखावहम् (sarvalokasukhāvaham) — bringing happiness to all the worldsbringing happiness to all the worlds·मित्रधर्मं हृदि स्मृत्वा (mitradharmaṃ hṛdi smṛtvā) — remembering the duty of friendship in your heartremembering the duty of friendship in your heart·कर्तुमर्हसि सांप्रतम् (kartumarhasi sāṃpratam) — you ought to accomplish it nowyou ought to accomplish it now

शंभुः स गिरिराजे हि (śaṃbhuḥ sa girirāje hi) — that Śambhu, indeed, on the king of mountainsthat Śambhu, indeed, on the king of mountains·तपः परममास्थितः (tapaḥ paramamāsthitaḥ) — is engaged in the highest austerityis engaged in the highest austerity·स प्रभुर्नापि कामेन (sa prabhurnāpi kāmena) — that lord is not [swayed] even by desirethat lord is not [swayed] even by desire·स्वतंत्रः परमेश्वरः (svataṃtraḥ parameśvaraḥ) — he is independent, the supreme lordhe is independent, the supreme lord

तत्समीपे च देवार्थं (tatsamīpe ca devārthaṃ) — and near him, for the gods' sakeand near him, for the gods' sake·पार्वती स्वसखीयुता (pārvatī svasakhīyutā) — Pārvatī, accompanied by her own friendsPārvatī, accompanied by her own friends·सेवमाना तिष्ठतीति (sevamānā tiṣṭhatīti) — stands there, rendering service — so it is saidstands there, rendering service — so it is said·पित्राज्ञप्ता मया श्रुतम् (pitrājñaptā mayā śrutam) — commanded by her father — thus have I heardcommanded by her father — thus have I heard

यथा तस्यां रुचिस्तस्य (yathā tasyāṃ rucistasya) — in such a way that his liking for herin such a way that his liking for her·शिवस्य नियतात्मनः (śivasya niyatātmanaḥ) — of Śiva, whose self is restrainedof Śiva, whose self is restrained·जायेत नितरां मार (jāyeta nitarāṃ māra) — should arise exceedingly, O Mārashould arise exceedingly, O Māra·तथा कार्यं त्वया ध्रुवम् (tathā kāryaṃ tvayā dhruvam) — thus the task must certainly be done by youthus the task must certainly be done by you

इति कृत्वा कृती स्यास्त्वं (iti kṛtvā kṛtī syāstvaṃ) — having done this, you shall become one who has achieved his purposehaving done this, you shall become one who has achieved his purpose·सर्वं दुःखं विनङ्क्ष्यति (sarvaṃ duḥkhaṃ vinaṅkṣyati) — all sorrow shall be destroyedall sorrow shall be destroyed·लोके स्थायी प्रतापस्ते (loke sthāyī pratāpaste) — your fame in the world, enduringyour fame in the world, enduring·भविष्यति न चान्यथा (bhaviṣyati na cānyathā) — shall come to be, and not otherwiseshall come to be, and not otherwise

इत्युक्तः स तु कामो हि (ityuktaḥ sa tu kāmo hi) — thus addressed, that Kāma indeedthus addressed, that Kāma indeed·प्रफुल्लमुखपंकजः (praphullamukhapaṃkajaḥ) — his lotus-face now in full bloomhis lotus-face now in full bloom·प्रेम्णोवाचेति देवेशं (premṇovāceti deveśaṃ) — spoke with love to the lord of gods, thusspoke with love to the lord of gods, thus·करिष्यामि न संशयः (kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ) — 'I shall do it — there is no doubt''I shall do it — there is no doubt'

इत्युक्त्वा वचनं तस्मै (ityuktvā vacanaṃ tasmai) — having spoken this word to himhaving spoken this word to him·तथेत्योमिति तद्वचः (tathetyomiti tadvacaḥ) — 'so be it,' 'om' — that word'so be it,' 'om' — that word·अग्रहीत्तरसा कामः (agrahīttarasā kāmaḥ) — Kāma accepted swiftlyKāma accepted swiftly·शिवमायाविमोहितः (śivamāyāvimohitaḥ) — deluded by Śiva's māyādeluded by Śiva's māyā

यत्र योगीश्वरः साक्षात् (yatra yogīśvaraḥ sākṣāt) — where the lord of yogis himselfwhere the lord of yogis himself·तप्यते परमं तपः (tapyate paramaṃ tapaḥ) — was performing the highest austeritywas performing the highest austerity·जगाम तत्र सुप्रीतः (jagāma tatra suprītaḥ) — there he went, well pleasedthere he went, well pleased·सदारः सवसन्तकः (sadāraḥ savasantakaḥ) — together with his wife and with Vasantatogether with his wife and with Vasanta
