अहं श्रुत्वामरनुतिं (ahaṃ śrutvāmaranutiṃ) — I, having heard the praise of the immortalsI, having heard the praise of the immortals·यथार्थां हृदयङ्गमाम् (yathārthāṃ hṛdayaṅgamām) — true, and touching the hearttrue, and touching the heart·सुप्रसन्नतरो भूत्वा (suprasannataro bhūtvā) — becoming exceedingly pleasedbecoming exceedingly pleased·प्रत्यवोचं दिवौकसः (pratyavocaṃ divaukasaḥ) — I replied to the godsI replied to the gods

स्वागतं स्वाधिकारा वै (svāgataṃ svādhikārā vai) — welcome; are you, each in your own chargewelcome; are you, each in your own charge·निर्विघ्नाः सन्ति वः सुराः (nirvighnāḥ santi vaḥ surāḥ) — free of obstruction, O godsfree of obstruction, O gods·किमर्थमागता यूयम् (kimarthamāgatā yūyam) — for what reason have you comefor what reason have you come·अत्र सर्वे वदन्तु मे (atra sarve vadantu me) — here — let all of you tell mehere — let all of you tell me

इति श्रुत्वा वचो मे (iti śrutvā vaco me) — hearing these words of minehearing these words of mine·ते नत्वा सर्वे दिवौकसः (te natvā sarve divaukasaḥ) — all those gods, bowingall those gods, bowing·मामूचुर्नतका दीनाः (māmūcurnatakā dīnāḥ) — bent low and wretched, spoke to mebent low and wretched, spoke to me·तारकेण प्रपीडिताः (tārakeṇa prapīḍitāḥ) — oppressed by Tārakaoppressed by Tāraka

लोकेश तारको दैत्यो (lokeśa tārako daityo) — O lord of the world, the demon TārakaO lord of the world, the demon Tāraka·वरेण तव दर्पितः (vareṇa tava darpitaḥ) — made arrogant by your boonmade arrogant by your boon·निरस्यास्मान्हठात्स्थानान् (nirasyāsmānhaṭhātsthānān) — has driven us forcibly from our placeshas driven us forcibly from our places·यग्रहीत्रो बलात्स्वयम् (yagrahītro balātsvayam) — and has seized them himself by forceand has seized them himself by force

भवतः किमु न ज्ञातं (bhavataḥ kimu na jñātaṃ) — do you not knowdo you not know·दुःखं यन्न उपस्थितम् (duḥkhaṃ yanna upasthitam) — the sorrow that has befallen usthe sorrow that has befallen us·तद्दुःखं नाशय क्षिप्रं (tadduḥkhaṃ nāśaya kṣipraṃ) — destroy that sorrow swiftlydestroy that sorrow swiftly·वयं ते शरणं गताः (vayaṃ te śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ) — we have come to you for refugewe have come to you for refuge

अहर्निशं बाधतेऽस्मान् (aharniśaṃ bādhate'smān) — day and night he harasses usday and night he harasses us·यत्र तत्रास्थितान्स वै (yatra tatrāsthitānsa vai) — wherever we may bewherever we may be·पलायमानाः पश्यामो (palāyamānāḥ paśyāmo) — fleeing, we seefleeing, we see·यत्र तत्रापि तारकम् (yatra tatrāpi tārakam) — Tāraka there too, wherever we goTāraka there too, wherever we go

तारकान्नश्च यदुःखं (tārakānnaśca yaduḥkhaṃ) — whatever sorrow has arisen for us from Tārakawhatever sorrow has arisen for us from Tāraka·संभूतं सकलेश्वर (saṃbhūtaṃ sakaleśvara) — O lord of allO lord of all·तेन सर्वे वयं तात (tena sarve vayaṃ tāta) — by it, O father, all of usby it, O father, all of us·पीडिता विकला अति (pīḍitā vikalā ati) — are afflicted, utterly distraughtare afflicted, utterly distraught

अग्न्यर्यमोऽथ वरुणो (agnyaryamo'tha varuṇo) — Agni, Yama, and VaruṇaAgni, Yama, and Varuṇa·निर्ऋतिर्वायुरेव च (nirṛtirvāyureva ca) — Nirṛti and Vāyu tooNirṛti and Vāyu too·अन्ये दिक्पतयश्चापि (anye dikpatayaścāpi) — and the other guardians of the directions as welland the other guardians of the directions as well·सर्वे तद्वशगामिनः (sarve tadvaśagāminaḥ) — all have come under his swayall have come under his sway

सर्वे मनुष्यधर्माणः (sarve manuṣyadharmāṇaḥ) — all, reduced to the condition of menall, reduced to the condition of men·सर्वैः परिकरैर्युताः (sarvaiḥ parikarairyutāḥ) — together with all their retinuestogether with all their retinues·सेवन्ते तं महादैत्यं (sevante taṃ mahādaityaṃ) — serve that great demonserve that great demon·न स्वतंत्राः कदाचन (na svataṃtrāḥ kadācana) — never are they freenever are they free

एवं तेनार्दिता देवा (evaṃ tenārditā devā) — thus afflicted by him, the godsthus afflicted by him, the gods·वशगास्तस्य सर्वदा (vaśagāstasya sarvadā) — are always under his controlare always under his control·तदिच्छाकार्यनिरताः (tadicchākāryaniratāḥ) — devoted to whatever task he wishesdevoted to whatever task he wishes·सर्वे तस्यानुजीविनः (sarve tasyānujīvinaḥ) — all have become his dependentsall have become his dependents

यावत्यो वनिताः सर्वा (yāvatyo vanitāḥ sarvā) — whatever women there arewhatever women there are·ये चाप्यप्सरसां गणाः (ye cāpyapsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ) — and whatever the troops of Apsarasesand whatever the troops of Apsarases·सर्वास्तानग्रहीद्दैत्यः (sarvāstānagrahīddaityaḥ) — all of them has that demon seizedall of them has that demon seized·तारकोऽसौ महाबली (tārako'sau mahābalī) — that mighty Tārakathat mighty Tāraka

न यज्ञाः संप्रवर्तन्ते (na yajñāḥ saṃpravartante) — no sacrifices are performedno sacrifices are performed·न तपस्यन्ति तापसाः (na tapasyanti tāpasāḥ) — no ascetics practice austerityno ascetics practice austerity·दानधर्मादिकं किंचित् (dānadharmādikaṃ kiṃcit) — nothing at all of giving, righteousness, and the likenothing at all of giving, righteousness, and the like·न लोकेषु प्रवर्तते (na lokeṣu pravartate) — takes place in the worldstakes place in the worlds

तस्य सेनापतिः क्रौंचो (tasya senāpatiḥ krauṃco) — his commander is Krauñcahis commander is Krauñca·महापाप्यस्ति दानवः (mahāpāpyasti dānavaḥ) — a most sinful demona most sinful demon·स पातालतलं गत्वा (sa pātālatalaṃ gatvā) — going down to the netherworldgoing down to the netherworld·बाधते त्वनिशं प्रजाः (bādhate tvaniśaṃ prajāḥ) — he continually harasses the people therehe continually harasses the people there

तेन नस्तारकेणेदं (tena nastārakeṇedaṃ) — by that Tāraka of oursby that Tāraka of ours·सकलं भुवनत्रयम् (sakalaṃ bhuvanatrayam) — this entire triple worldthis entire triple world·हतं हठाज्जगद्धातः (hataṃ haṭhājjagaddhātaḥ) — has been struck down by force, O sustainer of the worldhas been struck down by force, O sustainer of the world·पापेनाकरुणात्मना (pāpenākaruṇātmanā) — by that sinful, merciless beingby that sinful, merciless being

वयं च तत्र यास्यामो (vayaṃ ca tatra yāsyāmo) — and we shall go thereand we shall go there·यत्स्थानं त्वं विनिर्दिशेः (yatsthānaṃ tvaṃ vinirdiśeḥ) — to whatever place you may point outto whatever place you may point out·स्वस्थास्तद्वारितास्तेन (svasthāstadvāritāstena) — we, once secure, having been barred from it by himwe, once secure, having been barred from it by him·लोकनाथ सुरारिणा (lokanātha surāriṇā) — O lord of the world, by that enemy of the godsO lord of the world, by that enemy of the gods

त्वं नो गतिश्च शास्ता च (tvaṃ no gatiśca śāstā ca) — you are our refuge and our ruleryou are our refuge and our ruler·धाता त्राता त्वमेव हि (dhātā trātā tvameva hi) — you indeed are our sustainer and protectoryou indeed are our sustainer and protector·वयं सर्वे तारकाख्यवह्नौ (vayaṃ sarve tārakākhyavahnau) — we are all, in the fire named Tārakawe are all, in the fire named Tāraka·दग्धाः सुविह्वलाः (dagdhāḥ suvihvalāḥ) — burnt, utterly overwhelmedburnt, utterly overwhelmed

तेन क्रूरा उपाया नः (tena krūrā upāyā naḥ) — by him, our harsh remediesby him, our harsh remedies·सर्वे हतबलाः कृताः (sarve hatabalāḥ kṛtāḥ) — have all been rendered powerlesshave all been rendered powerless·विकारे सांनिपाते वा (vikāre sāṃnipāte vā) — as in a disorder of the combined humorsas in a disorder of the combined humors·वीर्यवन्त्यौषधानि च (vīryavantyauṣadhāni ca) — [where] even potent medicines [fail][where] even potent medicines [fail]

यत्रास्माकं जयाशा हि (yatrāsmākaṃ jayāśā hi) — wherein indeed lay our hope of victorywherein indeed lay our hope of victory·हरिचक्रे सुदर्शने (haricakre sudarśane) — in Hari's discus Sudarśanain Hari's discus Sudarśana·तत्कुंठितमभूत्तस्य (tatkuṃṭhitamabhūttasya) — that too has become blunted, on histhat too has become blunted, on his·कंठे पुष्पमिवार्पितम् (kaṃṭhe puṣpamivārpitam) — neck, like a flower laid thereneck, like a flower laid there

इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा (ityetadvacanaṃ śrutvā) — hearing this speechhearing this speech·निर्जराणामहं मुने (nirjarāṇāmahaṃ mune) — of the immortals, I, O sageof the immortals, I, O sage·प्रत्यवोचं सुरान्सर्वान् (pratyavocaṃ surānsarvān) — replied to all the godsreplied to all the gods·तत्कालसदृशं वचः (tatkālasadṛśaṃ vacaḥ) — with words fitting that occasionwith words fitting that occasion

ममैव वचसा दैत्यः (mamaiva vacasā daityaḥ) — by my own word alone has the demonby my own word alone has the demon·तारकाख्यः समेधितः (tārakākhyaḥ samedhitaḥ) — named Tāraka grown mightynamed Tāraka grown mighty·न मत्तस्तस्य हननं (na mattastasya hananaṃ) — his death should not come from mehis death should not come from me·युज्यते हि दिवौकसः (yujyate hi divaukasaḥ) — it is fitting, O godsit is fitting, O gods

ततो नैव वधो योग्यो (tato naiva vadho yogyo) — therefore his slaying is not propertherefore his slaying is not proper·यतो वृद्धिमुपागतः (yato vṛddhimupāgataḥ) — since it is by me that he has grownsince it is by me that he has grown·विषवृक्षोऽपि संवर्ध्य (viṣavṛkṣo'pi saṃvardhya) — having raised even a poison-treehaving raised even a poison-tree·स्वयं छेत्तुमसांप्रतम् (svayaṃ chettumasāṃpratam) — it is not fitting to cut it down oneselfit is not fitting to cut it down oneself

युष्माकं चाखिलं कार्यं (yuṣmākaṃ cākhilaṃ kāryaṃ) — and this whole task of yoursand this whole task of yours·कर्तुं योग्यो हि शंकरः (kartuṃ yogyo hi śaṃkaraḥ) — Śaṅkara indeed is fit to accomplishŚaṅkara indeed is fit to accomplish·किन्तु स्वयं न शक्तो हि (kintu svayaṃ na śakto hi) — but he himself is not ablebut he himself is not able·प्रतिकर्तुं प्रचोदितः (pratikartuṃ pracoditaḥ) — to act against him, unless urgedto act against him, unless urged

तारकाख्यस्तु पापेन (tārakākhyastu pāpena) — Tāraka, by his own sinTāraka, by his own sin·स्वयमेष्यति संक्षयम् (svayameṣyati saṃkṣayam) — will himself come to destructionwill himself come to destruction·यथा यूयं संविदध्वम् (yathā yūyaṃ saṃvidadhvam) — act as I now direct youact as I now direct you·उपदेशकरस्त्वहम् (upadeśakarastvaham) — I am only the one who gives the counselI am only the one who gives the counsel

न मया तारको वध्यो (na mayā tārako vadhyo) — Tāraka is not to be slain by meTāraka is not to be slain by me·हरिणापि हरेण च (hariṇāpi hareṇa ca) — nor by Hari, nor by Haranor by Hari, nor by Hara·नान्येनापि सुरैर्वापि (nānyenāpi surairvāpi) — nor by any other, nor even by all the godsnor by any other, nor even by all the gods·मद्राक्तत्सत्यमुच्यते (madrāktatsatyamucyate) — from my own boon this is spoken as truthfrom my own boon this is spoken as truth

शिववीर्यसमुत्पन्नो (śivavīryasamutpanno) — born of Śiva's own seedborn of Śiva's own seed·यदि स्यात्तनयः सुराः (yadi syāttanayaḥ surāḥ) — if there should be a son, O godsif there should be a son, O gods·स एव तारकाख्यस्य (sa eva tārakākhyasya) — he alone, of the one named Tārakahe alone, of the one named Tāraka·हन्ता दैत्यस्य नापरः (hantā daityasya nāparaḥ) — shall be the slayer of the demon, no othershall be the slayer of the demon, no other

यमुपायमहं वच्मि (yamupāyamahaṃ vacmi) — the plan I now tell youthe plan I now tell you·तं कुरुध्वं सुरोत्तमाः (taṃ kurudhvaṃ surottamāḥ) — carry that out, O best of godscarry that out, O best of gods·महादेवप्रसादेन (mahādevaprasādena) — by the grace of Mahādevaby the grace of Mahādeva·सिद्धिमेष्यति स ध्रुवम् (siddhimeṣyati sa dhruvam) — it will surely come to successit will surely come to success

सती दाक्षायणी पूर्वं (satī dākṣāyaṇī pūrvaṃ) — she who was formerly Satī, Dakṣa's daughtershe who was formerly Satī, Dakṣa's daughter·त्यक्तदेहा तु याभवत् (tyaktadehā tu yābhavat) — and who gave up her bodyand who gave up her body·सोत्पन्ना मेनकागर्भात् (sotpannā menakāgarbhāt) — she has been born from Menakā's wombshe has been born from Menakā's womb·सा कथा विदिता हि वः (sā kathā viditā hi vaḥ) — that story is indeed known to youthat story is indeed known to you

तस्या अवश्यं गिरिशः (tasyā avaśyaṃ giriśaḥ) — of her, Giriśa will surelyof her, Giriśa will surely·करिष्यति करग्रहम् (kariṣyati karagraham) — perform the taking of the hand [marry her]perform the taking of the hand [marry her]·तत्कुरुध्वमुपायं च (tatkurudhvamupāyaṃ ca) — nevertheless devise the means for itnevertheless devise the means for it·तथापि त्रिदिवौकसः (tathāpi tridivaukasaḥ) — O dwellers of heavenO dwellers of heaven

तथा विदध्वं सुतरां (tathā vidadhvaṃ sutarāṃ) — arrange it thus, most thoroughlyarrange it thus, most thoroughly·तस्यां तु परियत्नतः (tasyāṃ tu pariyatnataḥ) — with the utmost effort, upon herwith the utmost effort, upon her·पार्वत्यां मेनकाजायां (pārvatyāṃ menakājāyāṃ) — Pārvatī, Menakā's daughterPārvatī, Menakā's daughter·रेतःप्रतिनिपातने (retaḥpratinipātane) — that his seed should fallthat his seed should fall

तमूर्ध्वरेतसं शंभुं (tamūrdhvaretasaṃ śaṃbhuṃ) — that Śambhu, whose seed is ever upward-heldthat Śambhu, whose seed is ever upward-held·सैव प्रच्युतरेतसम् (saiva pracyutaretasam) — to make him one whose seed has fallen — she aloneto make him one whose seed has fallen — she alone·कर्तुं समर्था नान्यास्ति (kartuṃ samarthā nānyāsti) — is capable; no other womanis capable; no other woman·तथा काप्यबला बलात् (tathā kāpyabalā balāt) — howsoever weak, could do so by forcehowsoever weak, could do so by force

सा सुता गिरिराजस्य (sā sutā girirājasya) — that daughter of the mountain-kingthat daughter of the mountain-king·सांप्रतं प्रौढयौवना (sāṃprataṃ prauḍhayauvanā) — now in the fullness of her youthnow in the fullness of her youth·तपस्यन्तं हिमगिरौ (tapasyantaṃ himagirau) — performing austerity on the Himālayaperforming austerity on the Himālaya·नित्यं संसेवते हरम् (nityaṃ saṃsevate haram) — constantly attends upon Haraconstantly attends upon Hara

वाक्याद्धिमवतः काली (vākyāddhimavataḥ kālī) — at Himavat's word, Kālīat Himavat's word, Kālī·स्वपितुर्हठतश्शिवा (svapiturhaṭhataśśivā) — Śivā, compelled by her fatherŚivā, compelled by her father·सखीभ्यां सेवते सार्धं (sakhībhyāṃ sevate sārdhaṃ) — together with her two companions, attendstogether with her two companions, attends·ध्यानस्थं परमेश्वरम् (dhyānasthaṃ parameśvaram) — upon the supreme lord seated in meditationupon the supreme lord seated in meditation

तामग्रतोऽर्चमानां वै (tāmagrato'rcamānāṃ vai) — though she, worshipping him before his very eyesthough she, worshipping him before his very eyes·त्रैलोक्ये वरवर्णिनीम् (trailokye varavarṇinīm) — the most beautiful woman in the three worldsthe most beautiful woman in the three worlds·ध्यानासक्तो महेशो हि (dhyānāsakto maheśo hi) — Maheśa, absorbed in meditationMaheśa, absorbed in meditation·मनसापि न हीयते (manasāpi na hīyate) — does not waver even in minddoes not waver even in mind

भार्यां समीहेत यथा (bhāryāṃ samīheta yathā) — so that he should desire as wifeso that he should desire as wife·स कालीं चन्द्रशेखरः (sa kālīṃ candraśekharaḥ) — Candraśekhara, that KālīCandraśekhara, that Kālī·तथा विधध्वं त्रिदशा (tathā vidhadhvaṃ tridaśā) — so contrive, O godsso contrive, O gods·न चिरादेव यत्नतः (na cirādeva yatnataḥ) — without delay, by your effortwithout delay, by your effort

स्थानं गत्वाथ दैत्यस्य (sthānaṃ gatvātha daityasya) — and going to the place of the demonand going to the place of the demon·तमहं तारकं ततः (tamahaṃ tārakaṃ tataḥ) — that Tāraka, I thenthat Tāraka, I then·निवारयिष्ये कुहठात् (nivārayiṣye kuhaṭhāt) — shall restrain from his wrongful obstinacyshall restrain from his wrongful obstinacy·स्वस्थानं गच्छतामराः (svasthānaṃ gacchatāmarāḥ) — go, O gods, to your own abodesgo, O gods, to your own abodes

इत्युक्त्वाहं सुरान् शीघ्रं (ityuktvāhaṃ surān śīghraṃ) — having said this to the gods, I quicklyhaving said this to the gods, I quickly·तारकाख्यासुरस्य वै (tārakākhyāsurasya vai) — of the demon named Tārakaof the demon named Tāraka·उपसङ्गम्य सुप्रीत्या (upasaṅgamya suprītyā) — approached, and with great affectionapproached, and with great affection·समाभाष्येदमब्रवम् (samābhāṣyedamabravam) — addressing him, spoke thisaddressing him, spoke this

तेजःसारमिमं स्वर्गं (tejaḥsāramimaṃ svargaṃ) — this heaven, the very essence of splendorthis heaven, the very essence of splendor·राज्यं त्वं परिपासि नः (rājyaṃ tvaṃ paripāsi naḥ) — you now rule as its kingdom, on our behalfyou now rule as its kingdom, on our behalf·यदर्थं सुतपस्तप्तं (yadarthaṃ sutapastaptaṃ) — that for which such excellent austerity was performedthat for which such excellent austerity was performed·वाञ्छसि त्वं ततोऽधिकम् (vāñchasi tvaṃ tato'dhikam) — you desire more than thatyou desire more than that

वरश्चाप्यवरो दत्तो (varaścāpyavaro datto) — the boon that was given was a lesser onethe boon that was given was a lesser one·न मया स्वर्गराज्यता (na mayā svargarājyatā) — sovereignty over heaven was not given by mesovereignty over heaven was not given by me·तस्मात्स्वर्गं परित्यज्य (tasmātsvargaṃ parityajya) — therefore, giving up heaventherefore, giving up heaven·क्षितौ राज्यं समाचर (kṣitau rājyaṃ samācara) — rule instead upon the earthrule instead upon the earth

देवयोग्यानि तत्रैव (devayogyāni tatraiva) — the tasks fit for the gods, there toothe tasks fit for the gods, there too·कार्याणि निखिलान्यपि (kāryāṇi nikhilānyapi) — all of them, without exceptionall of them, without exception·भविष्यन्त्यसुरश्रेष्ठ (bhaviṣyantyasuraśreṣṭha) — shall be yours, O best of demonsshall be yours, O best of demons·नात्र कार्या विचारणा (nātra kāryā vicāraṇā) — have no hesitation about thishave no hesitation about this

इत्युक्त्वाहं च संबोध्य (ityuktvāhaṃ ca saṃbodhya) — having said this, and having instructedhaving said this, and having instructed·असुरं तं सकलेश्वरः (asuraṃ taṃ sakaleśvaraḥ) — that demon, I, the lord of allthat demon, I, the lord of all·स्मृत्वा शिवां च सशिवं (smṛtvā śivāṃ ca saśivaṃ) — calling to mind Śivā together with Śivacalling to mind Śivā together with Śiva·तत्रान्तर्धानमागतः (tatrāntardhānamāgataḥ) — vanished from that placevanished from that place

तारकोऽपि परित्यज्य (tārako'pi parityajya) — Tāraka too, giving upTāraka too, giving up·स्वर्गं क्षितिमथाभ्यगात् (svargaṃ kṣitimathābhyagāt) — heaven, then went to the earthheaven, then went to the earth·शोणिताख्यपुरे स्थित्वा (śoṇitākhyapure sthitvā) — dwelling in the city named Śoṇitadwelling in the city named Śoṇita·सर्वराज्यं चकार सः (sarvarājyaṃ cakāra saḥ) — he ruled over the whole kingdomhe ruled over the whole kingdom

देवाः सर्वेऽपि तच्छुत्वा (devāḥ sarve'pi tacchutvā) — all the gods too, hearing thatall the gods too, hearing that·मद्वाक्यं सुप्रणम्य माम् (madvākyaṃ supraṇamya mām) — my word, and bowing well to memy word, and bowing well to me·शक्रस्थानं ययुः प्रीत्या (śakrasthānaṃ yayuḥ prītyā) — went gladly to Indra's abodewent gladly to Indra's abode·शक्रेण सुसमाहिताः (śakreṇa susamāhitāḥ) — gathered together with Indragathered together with Indra

तत्र गत्वा मिलित्वा च (tatra gatvā militvā ca) — going there, and meeting togethergoing there, and meeting together·विचार्य च परस्परम् (vicārya ca parasparam) — and deliberating among themselvesand deliberating among themselves·ते सर्वे मरुतः प्रीत्या (te sarve marutaḥ prītyā) — all those Maruts, affectionatelyall those Maruts, affectionately·मघवन्तं वचोऽब्रुवन् (maghavantaṃ vaco'bruvan) — spoke this word to Maghavan [Indra]spoke this word to Maghavan [Indra]

शम्भोर्यथा शिवायां वै (śambhoryathā śivāyāṃ vai) — so that in Śivā, for Śambhuso that in Śivā, for Śambhu·रुचिर्जायेत कामतः (rucirjāyeta kāmataḥ) — love should arise through desirelove should arise through desire·मघवंस्ते प्रकर्तव्यं (maghavaṃste prakartavyaṃ) — O Maghavan, you must carry outO Maghavan, you must carry out·ब्रह्मोक्तं सर्वमेव तत् (brahmoktaṃ sarvameva tat) — all of that which Brahmā has toldall of that which Brahmā has told
