Chapter Sixteen · The Consoling of the Gods · Verses 1–46

The gods, driven from their posts and utterly oppressed by Tāraka, come to Brahmā and pour out their grief. Brahmā explains that he cannot slay Tāraka himself, since it was his own boon that made the demon what he is — nor can Viṣṇu, nor Śiva, nor any god; only a son born of Śiva's own seed can kill him. He then reveals his plan: Satī, reborn as Pārvatī, daughter of Himavat, already attends the meditating Śiva with devotion, though he remains unmoved; the gods must find a way to kindle Śiva's desire for her, while Brahmā himself will go to persuade Tāraka to give up the heavens for an earthly kingdom instead. Brahmā then appears to Tāraka, praises his tapas, and — without revealing his true purpose — persuades him to rule the earth from the city of Śoṇita rather than heaven. The gods return to Indra and, having heard Brahmā's plan, urge him to see it carried out.
