ततः सा समये पूर्णे (tataḥ sā samaye pūrṇe) — then, when the time was fulfilledthen, when the time was fulfilled·वराङ्गी सुषुवे सुतम् (varāṅgī suṣuve sutam) — Varāṅgī gave birth to a sonVarāṅgī gave birth to a son·महाकायं महावीर्यं (mahākāyaṃ mahāvīryaṃ) — of vast body, of great mightof vast body, of great might·प्रज्वलन्तं दिशो दश (prajvalantaṃ diśo daśa) — blazing through the ten directionsblazing through the ten directions

सोल्काश्चाशनयः पेतुः (solkāścāśanayaḥ petuḥ) — blazing thunderbolts fellblazing thunderbolts fell·महाशब्दा भयंकराः (mahāśabdā bhayaṃkarāḥ) — with great, terrifying soundwith great, terrifying sound·उदयं चक्रुरुत्कृष्टाः (udayaṃ cakrurutkṛṣṭāḥ) — fierce [comets] rosefierce [comets] rose·केतवो दुःखदायकाः (ketavo duḥkhadāyakāḥ) — comets, bringers of sorrowcomets, bringers of sorrow

चचाल वसुधा साद्रिः (cacāla vasudhā sādriḥ) — the earth, with its mountains, trembledthe earth, with its mountains, trembled·जज्वलुः सकला दिशः (jajvaluḥ sakalā diśaḥ) — all directions blazedall directions blazed·चुक्षुभुः सरितः सर्वाः (cukṣubhuḥ saritaḥ sarvāḥ) — all the rivers were roiledall the rivers were roiled·सागराश्च विशेषतः (sāgarāśca viśeṣataḥ) — and, especially, the oceansand, especially, the oceans

सराहोः सूर्यविध्वोस्तु (sarāhoḥ sūryavidhvostu) — around the sun and moon, with Rāhuaround the sun and moon, with Rāhu·मुहुः परिधयोऽभवन् (muhuḥ paridhayo'bhavan) — halos formed again and againhalos formed again and again·महाभयस्य विप्रेन्द्र (mahābhayasya viprendra) — of great terror, O foremost of Brahminsof great terror, O foremost of Brahmins·सूचकाः सुखहारकाः (sūcakāḥ sukhahārakāḥ) — signs, stealers of happinesssigns, stealers of happiness

महीधरविवरेभ्यश्च (mahīdharavivarebhyaśca) — and from the caves of mountainsand from the caves of mountains·निर्घाता भयसूचकाः (nirghātā bhayasūcakāḥ) — thunderclaps, signs of fearthunderclaps, signs of fear·रथनिर्ह्रादतुल्याश्च (rathanirhrādatulyāśca) — and like the rumble of chariotsand like the rumble of chariots·जज्ञिरेऽवसरे ततः (jajñire'vasare tataḥ) — arose at that timearose at that time

सृगालोलूकटंकारैः (sṛgālolūkaṭaṃkāraiḥ) — with the shrieks of jackals and owlswith the shrieks of jackals and owls·वमन्त्यो मुखतोऽनलम् (vamantyo mukhato'nalam) — spewing fire from their mouthsspewing fire from their mouths·अंतर्ग्रामेषु विकटं (aṃtargrāmeṣu vikaṭaṃ) — within the villages, terriblywithin the villages, terribly·प्रणेदुरशिवाः शिवाः (praṇeduraśivāḥ śivāḥ) — the inauspicious she-jackals howledthe inauspicious she-jackals howled

खार्कारभसा मत्ताः (khārkārabhasā mattāḥ) — braying furiously, maddenedbraying furiously, maddened·खुरैर्घ्नन्तो रसां खराः (khurairghnanto rasāṃ kharāḥ) — donkeys, striking the earth with their hoovesdonkeys, striking the earth with their hooves·वरूथशः तदा तात (varūthaśaḥ tadā tāta) — in herds, then, O sonin herds, then, O son·पर्यधावन्नितस्ततः (paryadhāvannitastataḥ) — ran about here and thereran about here and there

खगा उदपतन्नीडाद् (khagā udapatannīḍād) — birds flew up from their nestsbirds flew up from their nests·रासभत्रस्तमानसाः (rāsabhatrastamānasāḥ) — their minds terrified as by a braying asstheir minds terrified as by a braying ass·क्रोशंतो व्यग्रचित्ताश्च (krośaṃto vyagracittāśca) — crying out, and distraught in mindcrying out, and distraught in mind·स्थितिमापुर्न कुत्रचित् (sthitimāpurna kutracit) — they found rest nowherethey found rest nowhere

व्यरुदन्प्रतिमास्तत्र (vyarudanpratimāstatra) — there the images weptthere the images wept·देवानामुत्पतिष्णवः (devānāmutpatiṣṇavaḥ) — of the gods, seeming ready to leap upof the gods, seeming ready to leap up·विनानिलं द्रुमाः पेतुः (vinānilaṃ drumāḥ petuḥ) — trees fell without any windtrees fell without any wind·ग्रहयुद्धं बभूव खे (grahayuddhaṃ babhūva khe) — and there was war among the planets in the skyand there was war among the planets in the sky

इत्यादिका बहूत्पाता (ityādikā bahūtpātā) — such and many other portentssuch and many other portents·जज्ञिरे मुनिसत्तम (jajñire munisattama) — arose, O best of sagesarose, O best of sages·अज्ञानिनो जनास्तत्र (ajñānino janāstatra) — ignorant people thereignorant people there·मेनिरे विश्वसम्प्लवम् (menire viśvasamplavam) — believed it was the dissolution of the universebelieved it was the dissolution of the universe

महावीरः स सहसा (mahāvīraḥ sa sahasā) — that great hero, swiftlythat great hero, swiftly·व्यज्यमानात्मपौरुषः (vyajyamānātmapauruṣaḥ) — his own valor manifestinghis own valor manifesting·ववृधेऽत्यश्मसारेण (vavṛdhe'tyaśmasāreṇa) — grew, with a body harder than steelgrew, with a body harder than steel·कायेनाद्रिपतिर्यथा (kāyenādripatiryathā) — like the lord of mountainslike the lord of mountains

अथो स तारको दैत्यो (atho sa tārako daityo) — then that demon Tārakathen that demon Tāraka·महाबलपराक्रमः (mahābalaparākramaḥ) — of great strength and valorof great strength and valor·तपः कर्तुं जनन्याश्च (tapaḥ kartuṃ jananyāśca) — to perform austerity, of his mother'sto perform austerity, of his mother's·आज्ञां ययाचे महामनाः (ājñāṃ yayāce mahāmanāḥ) — begged permission, high-mindedbegged permission, high-minded

शतवर्षं जलं प्राश्नन् (śatavarṣaṃ jalaṃ prāśnan) — for a hundred years drinking [only] waterfor a hundred years drinking [only] water·शतवर्षं च वायुभुक् (śatavarṣaṃ ca vāyubhuk) — and for a hundred years feeding on airand for a hundred years feeding on air·शतवर्षं जले तिष्ठन् (śatavarṣaṃ jale tiṣṭhan) — for a hundred years standing in waterfor a hundred years standing in water·शतं च स्थण्डिलेऽतपत् (śataṃ ca sthaṇḍile'tapat) — and for a hundred he did austerity on bare groundand for a hundred he did austerity on bare ground

शतवर्षं तथा चाग्नौ (śatavarṣaṃ tathā cāgnau) — for a hundred years, likewise, amid firefor a hundred years, likewise, amid fire·शतवर्षमधोमुखः (śatavarṣamadhomukhaḥ) — for a hundred years with head hanging downfor a hundred years with head hanging down·शतवर्षं तु हस्तस्य (śatavarṣaṃ tu hastasya) — and for a hundred years, by his hand'sand for a hundred years, by his hand's·तलेन च भुवं स्थितः (talena ca bhuvaṃ sthitaḥ) — palm, he stood on the earthpalm, he stood on the earth

शतवर्षं तु वृक्षस्य (śatavarṣaṃ tu vṛkṣasya) — for a hundred years, of a tree'sfor a hundred years, of a tree's·शाखामालम्ब्य वै मुने (śākhāmālambya vai mune) — holding onto the branch, O sageholding onto the branch, O sage·पादाभ्यां शुचिधूमं हि (pādābhyāṃ śucidhūmaṃ hi) — with his feet, the pure smoke indeedwith his feet, the pure smoke indeed·पिबंश्चाधोमुखस्तथा (pibaṃścādhomukhastathā) — drinking, likewise hanging head-downdrinking, likewise hanging head-down

एवं कष्टतरं तेपे (evaṃ kaṣṭataraṃ tepe) — thus he performed still harsherthus he performed still harsher·सुतपः स तु दैत्यराट् (sutapaḥ sa tu daityarāṭ) — austerity, that lord of demonsausterity, that lord of demons·काममुद्दिश्य विधिवत् (kāmamuddiśya vidhivat) — aiming at his desire, in due formaiming at his desire, in due form·शृण्वतामपि दुस्सहम् (śṛṇvatāmapi dussaham) — unbearable even to those who merely heard of itunbearable even to those who merely heard of it

तत्रैवं तपतस्तस्य (tatraivaṃ tapatastasya) — as he thus practiced austerity thereas he thus practiced austerity there·महत्तेजो विनिस्सृतम् (mahattejo vinissṛtam) — a great radiance streamed fortha great radiance streamed forth·शिरसः सर्वसंसर्पि (śirasaḥ sarvasaṃsarpi) — from his head, spreading everywherefrom his head, spreading everywhere·महोपद्रवकृन्मुने (mahopadravakṛnmune) — causing great calamity, O sagecausing great calamity, O sage

तेनैव देवलोकास्ते (tenaiva devalokāste) — by that very [radiance], those worlds of the godsby that very [radiance], those worlds of the gods·दग्धप्राया बभूविरे (dagdhaprāyā babhūvire) — became almost burntbecame almost burnt·अभितो दुःखमापन्नाः (abhito duḥkhamāpannāḥ) — on every side fell into sorrowon every side fell into sorrow·सर्वे देवर्षयो मुने (sarve devarṣayo mune) — all the gods and seers, O sageall the gods and seers, O sage

इन्द्रश्च भयमापेदे (indraśca bhayamāpede) — and Indra fell into fearand Indra fell into fear·अधिकं देवेश्वरस्तदा (adhikaṃ deveśvarastadā) — exceedingly, the lord of the gods, thenexceedingly, the lord of the gods, then·तपस्यत्यद्य कश्चिद्धै (tapasyatyadya kaściddhai) — someone is performing austerity todaysomeone is performing austerity today·मत्पदं धर्षयिष्यति (matpadaṃ dharṣayiṣyati) — he will surely assail my thronehe will surely assail my throne

अकांडे चैव ब्रह्माण्डं (akāṃḍe caiva brahmāṇḍaṃ) — and untimely, the whole universeand untimely, the whole universe·संहरिष्यत्ययं प्रभुः (saṃhariṣyatyayaṃ prabhuḥ) — this mighty one will destroythis mighty one will destroy·इति संशयमापन्ना (iti saṃśayamāpannā) — thus falling into doubtthus falling into doubt·निश्चयं नोपलेभिरे (niścayaṃ nopalebhire) — they could reach no certaintythey could reach no certainty

ततः सर्वे सुसंमन्त्र्य (tataḥ sarve susaṃmantrya) — then all, having consulted wellthen all, having consulted well·मिथस्ते निर्जरर्षयः (mithaste nirjararṣayaḥ) — among themselves, those immortals and seersamong themselves, those immortals and seers·मल्लोकमगमन्भीता (mallokamagamanbhītā) — frightened, came to my worldfrightened, came to my world·दीना मां समुपस्थिताः (dīnā māṃ samupasthitāḥ) — wretched, approached mewretched, approached me

मां प्रणम्य सुसंस्तूय (māṃ praṇamya susaṃstūya) — bowing to me and praising me wellbowing to me and praising me well·सर्वे ते क्लिष्टचेतसः (sarve te kliṣṭacetasaḥ) — all of them, their minds afflictedall of them, their minds afflicted·कृतस्त्वञ्जलयो मह्यं (kṛtastvañjalayo mahyaṃ) — with hands folded to mewith hands folded to me·वृत्तं सर्वं न्यवेदयन् (vṛttaṃ sarvaṃ nyavedayan) — related the whole matterrelated the whole matter

अहं सर्वं सुनिश्चित्य (ahaṃ sarvaṃ suniścitya) — I, having fully ascertainedI, having fully ascertained·कारणं तस्य सद्बुद्ध्या (kāraṇaṃ tasya sadbuddhyā) — the cause of it, with good judgmentthe cause of it, with good judgment·वरं दातुं गतस्तत्र (varaṃ dātuṃ gatastatra) — went there, to grant a boonwent there, to grant a boon·यत्र तप्यति सोऽसुरः (yatra tapyati so'suraḥ) — where that demon was practicing austeritywhere that demon was practicing austerity

अवोचं वचनं तं वै (avocaṃ vacanaṃ taṃ vai) — I spoke this word to him indeedI spoke this word to him indeed·वरं ब्रूहीत्यहं मुने (varaṃ brūhītyahaṃ mune) — 'ask for a boon,' O sage'ask for a boon,' O sage·तपस्तप्तं त्वया तीव्रं (tapastaptaṃ tvayā tīvraṃ) — given the fierce austerity performed by yougiven the fierce austerity performed by you·नादेयं विद्यते तव (nādeyaṃ vidyate tava) — nothing that cannot be given to you existsnothing that cannot be given to you exists

इत्येवं मद्वचः श्रुत्वा (ityevaṃ madvacaḥ śrutvā) — hearing these words of minehearing these words of mine·तारकः स महासुरः (tārakaḥ sa mahāsuraḥ) — that great demon Tārakathat great demon Tāraka·मां प्रणम्य सुसंस्तूय (māṃ praṇamya susaṃstūya) — bowing to me and praising me wellbowing to me and praising me well·वरं वव्रेऽतिदारुणम् (varaṃ vavre'tidāruṇam) — asked for a most terrible boonasked for a most terrible boon

त्वयि प्रसन्ने वरदे (tvayi prasanne varade) — when you, the granter of boons, are pleasedwhen you, the granter of boons, are pleased·किमसाध्यं भवेन्मम (kimasādhyaṃ bhavenmama) — what could be unattainable for mewhat could be unattainable for me·अतो याचे वरं त्वत्तः (ato yāce varaṃ tvattaḥ) — therefore I ask a boon of youtherefore I ask a boon of you·शृणु तन्मे पितामह (śṛṇu tanme pitāmaha) — hear it from me, O grandfatherhear it from me, O grandfather

यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश (yadi prasanno deveśa) — if you are pleased, O lord of godsif you are pleased, O lord of gods·यदि देयो वरो मम (yadi deyo varo mama) — if a boon is to be given to meif a boon is to be given to me·देयं वरद्वयं मह्यं (deyaṃ varadvayaṃ mahyaṃ) — two boons should be given to metwo boons should be given to me·कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि (kṛpāṃ kṛtvā mamopari) — showing mercy upon meshowing mercy upon me

त्वया च निर्मिते लोके (tvayā ca nirmite loke) — in this world created by youin this world created by you·सकलेऽस्मिन्महाप्रभो (sakale'sminmahāprabho) — this whole one, O great lordthis whole one, O great lord·मत्तुल्यो बलवान्नूनं (mattulyo balavānnūnaṃ) — surely, a man equal to me in strengthsurely, a man equal to me in strength·न भवेत्कोऽपि वै पुमान् (na bhavetko'pi vai pumān) — should not exist at allshould not exist at all

शिववीर्यसमुत्पन्नः (śivavīryasamutpannaḥ) — born of Śiva's own seedborn of Śiva's own seed·पुत्रः सेनापतिर्यदा (putraḥ senāpatiryadā) — when a son, become a generalwhen a son, become a general·भूत्वा शस्त्रं क्षिपेन्मह्यं (bhūtvā śastraṃ kṣipenmahyaṃ) — having become so, hurls a weapon at mehaving become so, hurls a weapon at me·तदा मे मरणं भवेत् (tadā me maraṇaṃ bhavet) — then alone should my death comethen alone should my death come

इत्युक्तोऽथ तदा तेन (ityukto'tha tadā tena) — thus addressed then by thatthus addressed then by that·दैत्येनाहं मुनीश्वर (daityenāhaṃ munīśvara) — demon, I, O lord of sagesdemon, I, O lord of sages·वरं च तादृशं दत्त्वा (varaṃ ca tādṛśaṃ dattvā) — having granted just such a boonhaving granted just such a boon·स्वलोकमगमं द्रुतम् (svalokamagamaṃ drutam) — swiftly returned to my own worldswiftly returned to my own world

दैत्योऽपि स वरं लब्ध्वा (daityo'pi sa varaṃ labdhvā) — that demon too, having obtained the boonthat demon too, having obtained the boon·मनसेप्सितमुत्तमम् (manasepsitamuttamam) — desired in his heart, the bestdesired in his heart, the best·सुप्रसन्नतरो भूत्वा (suprasannataro bhūtvā) — becoming exceedingly pleasedbecoming exceedingly pleased·शोणिताख्यपुरं गतः (śoṇitākhyapuraṃ gataḥ) — went to the city named Śoṇitawent to the city named Śoṇita

देवानां चैव यद् द्रव्यं (devānāṃ caiva yad dravyaṃ) — and whatever wealth of the godsand whatever wealth of the gods·पितॄणां च परस्य च (pitṝṇāṃ ca parasya ca) — and of the ancestors, and of othersand of the ancestors, and of others·तत्सर्वं समुपादत्त (tatsarvaṃ samupādatta) — all of that was seizedall of that was seized·मसुरेण दुरात्मना (masureṇa durātmanā) — by that evil-souled demonby that evil-souled demon

वशीकृत्य स लोकांस्त्रीन् (vaśīkṛtya sa lokāṃstrīn) — having subdued the three worldshaving subdued the three worlds·स्वयमिन्द्रो बभूव ह (svayamindro babhūva ha) — he himself became Indrahe himself became Indra·अद्वितीयः प्रभुश्चासीत् (advitīyaḥ prabhuścāsīt) — he was the unrivalled lordhe was the unrivalled lord·राज्यं चक्रेऽद्भुतं वशी (rājyaṃ cakre'dbhutaṃ vaśī) — and, self-mastered, ruled with wondrous powerand, self-mastered, ruled with wondrous power
