तपः कुरु शुचिर्भूत्वा (tapaḥ kuru śucirbhūtvā) — perform austerity, becoming pureperform austerity, becoming pure·ब्रह्मणश्चायुतं समाः (brahmaṇaścāyutaṃ samāḥ) — toward Brahmā, for ten thousand yearstoward Brahmā, for ten thousand years·चेद्भविष्यति तत्पूर्वं (cedbhaviṣyati tatpūrvaṃ) — if that comes to pass firstif that comes to pass first·भविता ते सुतस्तदा (bhavitā te sutastadā) — then a son shall be yoursthen a son shall be yours

इन्द्रो दुष्टः प्रजाघाती (indro duṣṭaḥ prajāghātī) — Indra, wicked, a slayer of my mother's offspringIndra, wicked, a slayer of my mother's offspring·मातुर्मे स्वार्थसाधकः (māturme svārthasādhakaḥ) — and one who serves only his own interestand one who serves only his own interest·स फलं प्राप्नवानद्य (sa phalaṃ prāpnavānadya) — let him now obtain that fruitlet him now obtain that fruit·स्वराज्यं हि करोतु सः (svarājyaṃ hi karotu saḥ) — let him now rule his own kingdomlet him now rule his own kingdom

मातुराज्ञावशाद् ब्रह्मन् (māturājñāvaśād brahmann) — by the compulsion of my mother's command, O Brahmanby the compulsion of my mother's command, O Brahman·कृतमेतन्मयाखिलम् (kṛtametanmayākhilam) — all this was done by meall this was done by me·न मे भोगाभिलाषो वै (na me bhogābhilāṣo vai) — I have indeed no craving for enjoymentI have indeed no craving for enjoyment·कस्यचिद्भुवनस्य हि (kasyacidbhuvanasya hi) — of any world whatsoeverof any world whatsoever

तत्त्वसारं विधे ब्रूहि (tattvasāraṃ vidhe brūhi) — O ordainer, tell me the essence of truthO ordainer, tell me the essence of truth·मह्यं वेदविदांवर (mahyaṃ vedavidāṃvara) — to me, O best of knowers of the Vedato me, O best of knowers of the Veda·येन स्यां सुसुखी नित्यं (yena syāṃ susukhī nityaṃ) — by which I may be ever truly happyby which I may be ever truly happy·निर्विकारः प्रसन्नधीः (nirvikāraḥ prasannadhīḥ) — unwavering, of a pleased mindunwavering, of a pleased mind

तच्छ्रुत्वाहं मुनेऽवोचं (tacchrutvāhaṃ mune'vocaṃ) — hearing that, O sage, I saidhearing that, O sage, I said·सात्त्विको भाव उच्यते (sāttviko bhāva ucyate) — the sāttvika disposition is calledthe sāttvika disposition is called·तत्त्वसार इति प्रीत्या (tattvasāra iti prītyā) — "the essence of truth" — and, with pleasure"the essence of truth" — and, with pleasure·सृजाम्येकां वरां स्त्रियम् (sṛjāmyekāṃ varāṃ striyam) — I create one excellent womanI create one excellent woman

वराङ्गीं नाम तां दत्त्वा (varāṅgīṃ nāma tāṃ dattvā) — giving her, named Varāṅgīgiving her, named Varāṅgī·तस्मै दितिसुताय वै (tasmai ditisutāya vai) — indeed to that son of Ditiindeed to that son of Diti·अयां स्वधाम सुप्रीतः (ayāṃ svadhāma suprītaḥ) — I, well pleased, went to my own abodeI, well pleased, went to my own abode·कश्यपस्तत्पितापि च (kaśyapastatpitāpi ca) — and Kaśyapa, his father, likewiseand Kaśyapa, his father, likewise

ततो दैत्यः स वज्राङ्कः (tato daityaḥ sa vajrāṅkaḥ) — then that daitya Vajrāṅgathen that daitya Vajrāṅga·सात्त्विकं भावमाश्रितः (sāttvikaṃ bhāvamāśritaḥ) — resorting to the sāttvika dispositionresorting to the sāttvika disposition·आसुरं भावमुत्सृज्य (āsuraṃ bhāvamutsṛjya) — casting off his demonic naturecasting off his demonic nature·निर्वैरः सुखमाप्तवान् (nirvairaḥ sukhamāptavān) — free of enmity, attained happinessfree of enmity, attained happiness

न बभूव वरांग्या हि (na babhūva varāṃgyā hi) — but for Varāṅgī there did not arisebut for Varāṅgī there did not arise·हृदि भावोऽथ सात्त्विकः (hṛdi bhāvo'tha sāttvikaḥ) — in her heart the sāttvika dispositionin her heart the sāttvika disposition·सकामा स्वपतिं भेजे (sakāmā svapatiṃ bheje) — full of desire, she resorted to her husbandfull of desire, she resorted to her husband·श्रद्धया विविधं सती (śraddhayā vividhaṃ satī) — the virtuous woman, with devotion, in various waysthe virtuous woman, with devotion, in various ways

किमिच्छसि प्रिये ब्रूहि (kimicchasi priye brūhi) — what do you desire, O beloved — tell mewhat do you desire, O beloved — tell me·किं ते मनसि वर्तते (kiṃ te manasi vartate) — what is present in your mindwhat is present in your mind·तच्छ्रुत्वान्यत्तं प्राह (tacchrutvānyattaṃ prāha) — hearing this, attentive, she toldhearing this, attentive, she told·सा पतिं स्वमनोरथम् (sā patiṃ svamanoratham) — she, to her husband, her own heart's wishshe, to her husband, her own heart's wish

चेत् प्रसन्नोऽभवस्त्वं वै (cet prasanno'bhavastvaṃ vai) — if indeed you are pleasedif indeed you are pleased·सुतं मे देहि सत्पते (sutaṃ me dehi satpate) — give me a son, O virtuous lordgive me a son, O virtuous lord·महाबलं त्रिलोकस्य (mahābalaṃ trilokasya) — of great strength, of the three worldsof great strength, of the three worlds·जेतारं हरिदुःखदम् (jetāraṃ hariduḥkhadam) — a conqueror, a tormentor of Haria conqueror, a tormentor of Hari

इति श्रुत्वा प्रियावाक्यं (iti śrutvā priyāvākyaṃ) — hearing this word of his belovedhearing this word of his beloved·विस्मितोऽभूत्स आकुलः (vismito'bhūtsa ākulaḥ) — he became astonished and troubledhe became astonished and troubled·उवाच हृदि स ज्ञानी (uvāca hṛdi sa jñānī) — he, the knower, said within his hearthe, the knower, said within his heart·सात्त्विको वैरवर्जितः (sāttviko vairavarjitaḥ) — sāttvika, free of enmitysāttvika, free of enmity

प्रियेच्छति विरोधं वै (priyecchati virodhaṃ vai) — my beloved desires strife indeedmy beloved desires strife indeed·सुरैर्मे न हि रोचते (surairme na hi rocate) — with the gods; it does not please me at allwith the gods; it does not please me at all·किं कुर्यां हि क्व गच्छेयं (kiṃ kuryāṃ hi kva gaccheyaṃ) — what should I do, where should I gowhat should I do, where should I go·कथं नश्येन्न मे पणः (kathaṃ naśyenna me paṇaḥ) — how might my own pledge not be brokenhow might my own pledge not be broken

प्रियामनोरथश्चैव पूर्णः स्यात् (priyāmanorathaścaiva pūrṇaḥ syāt) — and if my beloved's wish should be fulfilledand if my beloved's wish should be fulfilled·त्रिजगद्द्रवेत् (trijagaddravet) — the three worlds would be thrown into distressthe three worlds would be thrown into distress·क्लेशयुङ् नितरां भूयो (kleśayuṅ nitarāṃ bhūyo) — beset again with exceeding afflictionbeset again with exceeding affliction·देवाश्च मुनयस्तथा (devāśca munayastathā) — and the gods and the sages likewiseand the gods and the sages likewise

न पूर्णः स्यात्प्रियाकामः (na pūrṇaḥ syātpriyākāmaḥ) — if my beloved's desire should not be fulfilledif my beloved's desire should not be fulfilled·तदा मे नरको भवेत् (tadā me narako bhavet) — then hell would be minethen hell would be mine·द्विधापि धर्महानिर्वै (dvidhāpi dharmahānirvai) — in either way, indeed, loss of dharmain either way, indeed, loss of dharma·भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुवान् (bhavatītyanuśuśruvān) — comes about — thus I have heardcomes about — thus I have heard

वज्राङ्ग इत्थं बभ्राम (vajrāṅga itthaṃ babhrāma) — Vajrāṅga wandered thus, in doubtVajrāṅga wandered thus, in doubt·स मुने धर्मसंकटे (sa mune dharmasaṃkaṭe) — O sage, caught in a dilemma of dharmaO sage, caught in a dilemma of dharma·बलाबलं द्वयोस्तत्र (balābalaṃ dvayostatra) — the strength and weakness of both sides, therethe strength and weakness of both sides, there·विचिचिंत च बुद्धितः (viciciṃta ca buddhitaḥ) — he weighed, with his intellecthe weighed, with his intellect

वज्राङ्गस्तु तदा प्रीतं (vajrāṅgastu tadā prītaṃ) — and Vajrāṅga then, seeing me pleasedand Vajrāṅga then, seeing me pleased·मां दृष्ट्वा खे स्थितं विभुम् (māṃ dṛṣṭvā khe sthitaṃ vibhum) — the mighty one, standing in the skythe mighty one, standing in the sky·सुप्रणम्य बहु स्तुत्वा (supraṇamya bahu stutvā) — bowing well, praising muchbowing well, praising much·वरं वव्रे प्रियाहितम् (varaṃ vavre priyāhitam) — chose a boon beneficial to his belovedchose a boon beneficial to his beloved

सुतं देहि स्वमातुर्मे (sutaṃ dehi svamāturme) — give a son, of great benefit to my own mothergive a son, of great benefit to my own mother·महाहितकरं प्रभो (mahāhitakaraṃ prabho) — O lord, working great goodO lord, working great good·महाबलं सुप्रतापं (mahābalaṃ supratāpaṃ) — greatly strong, greatly powerfulgreatly strong, greatly powerful·सुसमर्थं तपोनिधिम् (susamarthaṃ taponidhim) — greatly capable, a treasury of austeritygreatly capable, a treasury of austerity
