तपःशक्त्यान्वितः शम्भो (tapaḥśaktyānvitaḥ śambho) — O Śambhu, endowed with the power of tapasO Śambhu, endowed with the power of tapas·करोषि विपुलं तपः (karoṣi vipulaṃ tapaḥ) — you perform vast austerityyou perform vast austerity·तव बुद्धिरियं जाता (tava buddhiriyaṃ jātā) — this resolve has arisen in youthis resolve has arisen in you·तपस्तप्तुं महात्मनः (tapastaptuṃ mahātmanaḥ) — O great soul, to perform austerityO great soul, to perform austerity

सा शक्तिः प्रकृतिज्ञेया (sā śaktiḥ prakṛtijñeyā) — that Śakti is to be known as Prakṛtithat Śakti is to be known as Prakṛti·सर्वेषामपि कर्मणाम् (sarveṣāmapi karmaṇām) — of all actions whatsoeverof all actions whatsoever·तया विरच्यते सर्वं (tayā viracyate sarvaṃ) — by her everything is createdby her everything is created·पाल्यते च विनाश्यते (pālyate ca vināśyate) — and sustained and destroyedand sustained and destroyed

कस्त्वं का प्रकृतिः सूक्ष्मा (kastvaṃ kā prakṛtiḥ sūkṣmā) — who are you, and what is the subtle prakṛtiwho are you, and what is the subtle prakṛti·भगवंस्तद्विमृश्यताम् (bhagavaṃstadvimṛśyatām) — O lord, let this be consideredO lord, let this be considered·विना प्रकृत्या च कथं (vinā prakṛtyā ca kathaṃ) — and how, without prakṛtiand how, without prakṛti·लिङ्गरूपी महेश्वरः (liṅgarūpī maheśvaraḥ) — can Maheśvara have a manifest form at allcan Maheśvara have a manifest form at all

अर्चनीयोऽसि वन्द्योऽसि (arcanīyo'si vandyo'si) — you are worthy of worship, worthy of homageyou are worthy of worship, worthy of homage·ध्येयोऽसि प्राणिनां सदा (dhyeyo'si prāṇināṃ sadā) — worthy of meditation, ever, for all beingsworthy of meditation, ever, for all beings·प्रकृत्या च विचार्येति (prakṛtyā ca vicāryeti) — and this being considered through prakṛtiand this being considered through prakṛti·हृदा सर्वं तदुच्यताम् (hṛdā sarvaṃ taducyatām) — let all of it be told, weighed in the heartlet all of it be told, weighed in the heart

तस्माच्च प्रकृतेः सद्भिः (tasmācca prakṛteḥ sadbhiḥ) — and therefore, by the virtuous, of prakṛtiand therefore, by the virtuous, of prakṛti·न कार्यः सङ्ग्रहः क्वचित् (na kāryaḥ saṅgrahaḥ kvacit) — no attachment should ever be madeno attachment should ever be made·स्थातव्यं निर्विकारैश्च (sthātavyaṃ nirvikāraiśca) — and one should remain unchangingand one should remain unchanging·लोकाचारविवर्जितैः (lokācāravivarjitaiḥ) — and free from worldly customand free from worldly custom

इत्युक्ता शम्भुना तात (ityuktā śambhunā tāta) — thus addressed by Śambhu, O dear onethus addressed by Śambhu, O dear one·लौकिकव्यवहारतः (laukikavyavahārataḥ) — according to worldly customaccording to worldly custom·सुविहस्य हृदा काली (suvihasya hṛdā kālī) — Kālī, laughing well within her heartKālī, laughing well within her heart·जगाद मधुरं वचः (jagāda madhuraṃ vacaḥ) — spoke a sweet wordspoke a sweet word

यदुक्तं भवता योगिन् (yaduktaṃ bhavatā yoginn) — what has been said by you, O yogīwhat has been said by you, O yogī·वचनं शंकर प्रभो (vacanaṃ śaṃkara prabho) — that word, O Śaṅkara, O lordthat word, O Śaṅkara, O lord·सा च किं प्रकृतिर्न स्यात् (sā ca kiṃ prakṛtirna syāt) — is that not itself prakṛtiis that not itself prakṛti·अतीतस्तां भवान्कथम् (atītastāṃ bhavānkatham) — how are you beyond herhow are you beyond her

एतद्विचार्य वक्तव्यं (etadvicārya vaktavyaṃ) — this should be considered and spokenthis should be considered and spoken·तत्त्वतो हि यथातथम् (tattvato hi yathātatham) — truly, exactly as it istruly, exactly as it is·प्रकृत्या सर्वमेतच्च (prakṛtyā sarvametacca) — and all this, by prakṛtiand all this, by prakṛti·बद्धमस्ति निरंतरम् (baddhamasti niraṃtaram) — is bound, without a breakis bound, without a break

तस्मात्त्वया न वक्तव्यं (tasmāttvayā na vaktavyaṃ) — therefore nothing should be said by youtherefore nothing should be said by you·न कार्यं किंचिदेव हि (na kāryaṃ kiṃcideva hi) — nor anything at all donenor anything at all done·वचनं रचनं सर्वं (vacanaṃ racanaṃ sarvaṃ) — speech and every makingspeech and every making·प्राकृतं विद्धि चेतसा (prākṛtaṃ viddhi cetasā) — know with your mind to be of prakṛtiknow with your mind to be of prakṛti

यच्छृणोषि यदश्नासि (yacchṛṇoṣi yadaśnāsi) — what you hear, what you eatwhat you hear, what you eat·यत्पश्यसि करोषि यत् (yatpaśyasi karoṣi yat) — what you see, what you dowhat you see, what you do·तत्सर्वं प्रकृतेः कार्यं (tatsarvaṃ prakṛteḥ kāryaṃ) — all of that is prakṛti's own workall of that is prakṛti's own work·मिथ्यावादो निरर्थकः (mithyāvādo nirarthakaḥ) — to call it false is pointlessto call it false is pointless

प्रकृतेः परमश्चेत्त्वं (prakṛteḥ paramaścettvaṃ) — if you are beyond prakṛtiif you are beyond prakṛti·किमर्थं तप्यसे तपः (kimarthaṃ tapyase tapaḥ) — for what purpose do you perform austerityfor what purpose do you perform austerity·त्वया शंभोऽधुना ह्यस्मिन् (tvayā śaṃbho'dhunā hyasmin) — by you, O Śambhu, now, on thisby you, O Śambhu, now, on this·गिरौ हिमवति प्रभो (girau himavati prabho) — mountain Himavat, O lordmountain Himavat, O lord

प्रकृत्या गिलितोऽसि त्वं (prakṛtyā gilito'si tvaṃ) — you have been swallowed by prakṛtiyou have been swallowed by prakṛti·न जानासि निजं हर (na jānāsi nijaṃ hara) — O Hara, you do not know your own selfO Hara, you do not know your own self·निजं जानासि चेदीश (nijaṃ jānāsi cedīśa) — and if, O lord, you do know your own selfand if, O lord, you do know your own self·किमर्थं तप्यसे तपः (kimarthaṃ tapyase tapaḥ) — for what purpose do you perform austerityfor what purpose do you perform austerity

वाग्वादेन च किं कार्यं (vāgvādena ca kiṃ kāryaṃ) — and what use is there, with disputationand what use is there, with disputation·मम योगिंस्त्वया सह (mama yogiṃstvayā saha) — to me, O yogī, with youto me, O yogī, with you·प्रत्यक्षे ह्यनुमानस्य (pratyakṣe hyanumānasya) — when direct perception is present, of inferencewhen direct perception is present, of inference·न प्रमाणं विदुर्बुधाः (na pramāṇaṃ vidurbudhāḥ) — the wise do not recognize it as a valid means of knowledgethe wise do not recognize it as a valid means of knowledge

इंद्रियाणां गोचरत्वं (iṃdriyāṇāṃ gocaratvaṃ) — the state of being an object of the sensesthe state of being an object of the senses·यावद्भवति देहिनाम् (yāvadbhavati dehinām) — whatever comes to be, for embodied beingswhatever comes to be, for embodied beings·तावत्सर्वं विमन्तव्यं (tāvatsarvaṃ vimantavyaṃ) — all of that should be consideredall of that should be considered·प्राकृतं ज्ञानिभिर्धिया (prākṛtaṃ jñānibhirdhiyā) — as of prakṛti, by the wise, with their intellectas of prakṛti, by the wise, with their intellect

किं बहूक्तेन योगीश (kiṃ bahūktena yogīśa) — what use is much speech, O lord of yogīswhat use is much speech, O lord of yogīs·शृणु मद्वचनं परम् (śṛṇu madvacanaṃ param) — hear my supreme wordhear my supreme word·सा चाहं पुरुषोऽसि त्वं (sā cāhaṃ puruṣo'si tvaṃ) — I am that [prakṛti], and you are puruṣaI am that [prakṛti], and you are puruṣa·सत्यं सत्यं न संशयः (satyaṃ satyaṃ na saṃśayaḥ) — true, true, there is no doubttrue, true, there is no doubt

मदनुग्रहतस्त्वं हि (madanugrahatastvaṃ hi) — indeed, through grace granted by meindeed, through grace granted by me·सगुणो रूपवान्मतः (saguṇo rūpavānmataḥ) — you are held to be with qualities and possessed of formyou are held to be with qualities and possessed of form·मां विना त्वं निरीहोऽसि (māṃ vinā tvaṃ nirīho'si) — without me you are without effortwithout me you are without effort·न किंचित्कर्तुमर्हसि (na kiṃcitkartumarhasi) — and are not able to do anything at alland are not able to do anything at all

पराधीनः सदा त्वं हि (parādhīnaḥ sadā tvaṃ hi) — indeed, ever dependent on anotherindeed, ever dependent on another·नानाकर्मकरो वशी (nānākarmakaro vaśī) — controlled, performing manifold actscontrolled, performing manifold acts·निर्विकारी कथं त्वं हि (nirvikārī kathaṃ tvaṃ hi) — how then are you truly without changehow then are you truly without change·न लिप्तश्च मया कथम् (na liptaśca mayā katham) — and how are you not touched by meand how are you not touched by me

प्रकृतेः परमोऽसि त्वं (prakṛteḥ paramo'si tvaṃ) — if you are beyond prakṛtiif you are beyond prakṛti·यदि सत्यं वचस्तव (yadi satyaṃ vacastava) — if your word is trueif your word is true·तर्हि त्वया न भेतव्यं (tarhi tvayā na bhetavyaṃ) — then you should not be afraidthen you should not be afraid·समीपे मम शंकर (samīpe mama śaṃkara) — in my presence, O Śaṅkarain my presence, O Śaṅkara

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्याः (ityākarṇya vacastasyāḥ) — hearing this speech of hershearing this speech of hers·सांख्यशास्त्रोदितं शिवः (sāṃkhyaśāstroditaṃ śivaḥ) — declared in the manner of Sāṃkhya, Śivadeclared in the manner of Sāṃkhya, Śiva·वेदान्तमतसंस्थो हि (vedāntamatasaṃstho hi) — indeed, standing firm in the Vedānta viewindeed, standing firm in the Vedānta view·वाक्यमूचे शिवां प्रति (vākyamūce śivāṃ prati) — spoke a word to Śivāspoke a word to Śivā

इत्येवं त्वं यदि ब्रूषे (ityevaṃ tvaṃ yadi brūṣe) — if you speak thusif you speak thus·गिरिजे सांख्यधारिणी (girije sāṃkhyadhāriṇī) — O Girijā, holding the Sāṃkhya viewO Girijā, holding the Sāṃkhya view·प्रत्यहं कुरु मे सेवाम् (pratyahaṃ kuru me sevām) — then daily perform my servicethen daily perform my service·अनिषिद्धां सुभाषिणि (aniṣiddhāṃ subhāṣiṇi) — unforbidden, O fair-spoken oneunforbidden, O fair-spoken one

यद्यहं ब्रह्म निर्लिप्तो (yadyahaṃ brahma nirlipto) — if I, unstained Brahmanif I, unstained Brahman·मायया परमेश्वरः (māyayā parameśvaraḥ) — by māyā, the supreme lordby māyā, the supreme lord·वेदांतवेद्यो मायेशः (vedāṃtavedyo māyeśaḥ) — knowable through Vedānta, the lord of māyāknowable through Vedānta, the lord of māyā·त्वं करिष्यसि किं तदा (tvaṃ kariṣyasi kiṃ tadā) — what will you do, thenwhat will you do, then

इत्येवमुक्त्वा गिरिजां (ityevamuktvā girijāṃ) — having thus spoken to Girijāhaving thus spoken to Girijā·वाक्यमूचे गिरिं प्रभुः (vākyamūce giriṃ prabhuḥ) — the lord spoke a word to the mountainthe lord spoke a word to the mountain·भक्तानुरंजनकरो (bhaktānuraṃjanakaro) — he who gives delight to his devoteeshe who gives delight to his devotees·भक्तानुग्रहकारकः (bhaktānugrahakārakaḥ) — and who bestows grace upon his devoteesand who bestows grace upon his devotees

अत्रैव सोऽहं तपसा परेण (atraiva so'haṃ tapasā pareṇa) — right here, I, through supreme austerityright here, I, through supreme austerity·गिरे तव प्रस्थवरेऽतिरम्ये (gire tava prasthavare'tiramye) — O mountain, on your excellent, most delightful slopeO mountain, on your excellent, most delightful slope·चरामि भूमौ परमार्थभावस्वरूपम् (carāmi bhūmau paramārthabhāvasvarūpam) — shall walk this ground, my true nature of highest realityshall walk this ground, my true nature of highest reality·आनंदमयं सुलोचयन् (ānaṃdamayaṃ sulocayan) — full of bliss, well contemplatingfull of bliss, well contemplating

तपस्तपुमनुज्ञा मे (tapastapumanujñā me) — the permission for me to perform this austeritythe permission for me to perform this austerity·दातव्या पर्वताधिप (dātavyā parvatādhipa) — should be granted, O lord of mountainsshould be granted, O lord of mountains·अनुज्ञया विना किंचित् (anujñayā vinā kiṃcit) — without permission, nothing whatsoeverwithout permission, nothing whatsoever·तपः कर्तुं न शक्यते (tapaḥ kartuṃ na śakyate) — of austerity can be performedof austerity can be performed

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य (etacchrutvā vacastasya) — hearing this speech of hishearing this speech of his·देवदेवस्य शूलिनः (devadevasya śūlinaḥ) — the god of gods, the trident-bearerthe god of gods, the trident-bearer·प्रणम्य हिमवान् शंभुम् (praṇamya himavān śaṃbhum) — bowing to Śambhu, Himavānbowing to Śambhu, Himavān·इदं वचनमब्रवीत् (idaṃ vacanamabravīt) — spoke this wordspoke this word

त्वदीयं हि जगत्सर्वं (tvadīyaṃ hi jagatsarvaṃ) — indeed, this whole world is yoursindeed, this whole world is yours·सदेवासुरमानुषम् (sadevāsuramānuṣam) — together with gods, asuras and mentogether with gods, asuras and men·किमप्यहं महादेव (kimapyahaṃ mahādeva) — what, then, O great god, may Iwhat, then, O great god, may I·तुच्छो भूत्वा वदामि ते (tuccho bhūtvā vadāmi te) — being so trifling, say to youbeing so trifling, say to you

एवमुक्तो हिमवता (evamukto himavatā) — thus addressed by Himavatthus addressed by Himavat·शंकरो लोकशंकरः (śaṃkaro lokaśaṃkaraḥ) — Śaṅkara, the bringer of good to the worldŚaṅkara, the bringer of good to the world·विहस्य गिरिराजं तं (vihasya girirājaṃ taṃ) — laughing, to that king of mountainslaughing, to that king of mountains·प्राह याहीति सादरम् (prāha yāhīti sādaram) — said, with reverence, "go now"said, with reverence, "go now"

शंकरेणाभ्यनुज्ञातः (śaṃkareṇābhyanujñātaḥ) — given leave by Śaṅkaragiven leave by Śaṅkara·स्वगृहं हिमवान्ययौ (svagṛhaṃ himavānyayau) — Himavān went to his own homeHimavān went to his own home·सार्धं गिरिजया वै स (sārdhaṃ girijayā vai sa) — and he, together with Girijāand he, together with Girijā·प्रत्यहं दर्शने स्थितः (pratyahaṃ darśane sthitaḥ) — remained fixed, daily, on his darśanaremained fixed, daily, on his darśana

निषिषेध न तां कोऽपि (niṣiṣedha na tāṃ ko'pi) — no one at all forbade herno one at all forbade her·गणो नंदीश्वरादिकः (gaṇo naṃdīśvarādikaḥ) — among the gaṇas, beginning with Nandīśvaraamong the gaṇas, beginning with Nandīśvara·महेशशासनात्तात (maheśaśāsanāttāta) — O dear one, because of Maheśa's commandO dear one, because of Maheśa's command·तच्छासनकरः शुचिः (tacchāsanakaraḥ śuciḥ) — pure, carrying out that commandpure, carrying out that command

सांख्यवेदांतमतयोः (sāṃkhyavedāṃtamatayoḥ) — of the two, holding the Sāṃkhya and Vedānta viewsof the two, holding the Sāṃkhya and Vedānta views·शिवयोः शिवदः सदा (śivayoḥ śivadaḥ sadā) — of Śiva and Śivā, ever bestowing goodof Śiva and Śivā, ever bestowing good·संवादः सुखकृच्चोक्तः (saṃvādaḥ sukhakṛccoktaḥ) — this dialogue is declared to bring happinessthis dialogue is declared to bring happiness·अभिन्नयोः सुविचारतः (abhinnayoḥ suvicārataḥ) — for the two who, on true reflection, are undividedfor the two who, on true reflection, are undivided

गिरिराजस्य वचनात् (girirājasya vacanāt) — at the word of the king of mountainsat the word of the king of mountains·तनयां तस्य शंकरः (tanayāṃ tasya śaṃkaraḥ) — Śaṅkara [received] his daughterŚaṅkara [received] his daughter·पार्श्वे समीपे जग्राह (pārśve samīpe jagrāha) — took her close by his sidetook her close by his side·गौरवादपि गोपरः (gauravādapi goparaḥ) — even the lord beyond the senses, out of regard [for him]even the lord beyond the senses, out of regard [for him]

उवाचेदं वचः कालीं (uvācedaṃ vacaḥ kālīṃ) — said this word to Kālīsaid this word to Kālī·सखीभ्यां सह गोपतिः (sakhībhyāṃ saha gopatiḥ) — the lord of the earth, together with her companionsthe lord of the earth, together with her companions·नित्यं मां सेवतां यातु (nityaṃ māṃ sevatāṃ yātu) — let her go, ever serving melet her go, ever serving me·निर्भीता ह्यत्र तिष्ठतु (nirbhītā hyatra tiṣṭhatu) — or let her stay here, unafraidor let her stay here, unafraid

एवमुक्त्वा तु तां देवीं (evamuktvā tu tāṃ devīṃ) — having thus spoken, that goddesshaving thus spoken, that goddess·सेवायै जगृहे हरः (sevāyai jagṛhe haraḥ) — Hara accepted for his serviceHara accepted for his service·निर्विकारो महायोगी (nirvikāro mahāyogī) — the changeless great yogīthe changeless great yogī·नानालीलाकरः प्रभुः (nānālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, performer of manifold sportsthe lord, performer of manifold sports

इदमेव महद्धैर्यं (idameva mahaddhairyaṃ) — this alone is the great fortitudethis alone is the great fortitude·धीराणां सुतपस्विनाम् (dhīrāṇāṃ sutapasvinām) — of the steadfast and truly austereof the steadfast and truly austere·विघ्नवन्त्यपि संप्राप्य (vighnavantyapi saṃprāpya) — that, even on encountering things fraught with obstaclesthat, even on encountering things fraught with obstacles·यद्विघ्नैर्न विहन्यते (yadvighnairna vihanyate) — they are not thrown off course by such obstaclesthey are not thrown off course by such obstacles

ततः स्वपुरमायातो (tataḥ svapuramāyāto) — then, having come to his own citythen, having come to his own city·गिरिराट् परिचारकैः (girirāṭ paricārakaiḥ) — the king of mountains, with his attendantsthe king of mountains, with his attendants·मुमोदातीव मनसि (mumodātīva manasi) — rejoiced exceedingly in his mindrejoiced exceedingly in his mind·सप्रियः स मुनीश्वर (sapriyaḥ sa munīśvara) — together with his beloved, O lord of sagestogether with his beloved, O lord of sages

हरश्च ध्यानयोगेन (haraśca dhyānayogena) — and Hara, through the discipline of meditationand Hara, through the discipline of meditation·परमात्मानमादरात् (paramātmānamādarāt) — the supreme self, with reverencethe supreme self, with reverence·निर्विघ्नेन स्वमनसा (nirvighnena svamanasā) — with his own mind, undisturbedwith his own mind, undisturbed·त्वासीच्चिन्तयितुं स्थितः (tvāsīccintayituṃ sthitaḥ) — remained fixed in contemplationremained fixed in contemplation

काली सखीभ्यां सहिता (kālī sakhībhyāṃ sahitā) — Kālī, together with her companionsKālī, together with her companions·प्रत्यहं चंद्रशेखरम् (pratyahaṃ caṃdraśekharam) — daily, the moon-crested onedaily, the moon-crested one·सेवमाना महादेवं (sevamānā mahādevaṃ) — serving the great godserving the great god·गमनागमने स्थिता (gamanāgamane sthitā) — remained occupied in coming and goingremained occupied in coming and going

प्रक्षाल्य चरणौ शंभोः (prakṣālya caraṇau śaṃbhoḥ) — washing Śambhu's two feetwashing Śambhu's two feet·पपौ तच्चरणोदकम् (papau taccaraṇodakam) — she drank that foot-watershe drank that foot-water·वह्निशौचेन वस्त्रेण (vahniśaucena vastreṇa) — with a cloth purified by firewith a cloth purified by fire·चक्रे तद्गात्रमार्जनम् (cakre tadgātramārjanam) — she wiped clean his bodyshe wiped clean his body

षोडशेनोपचारेण (ṣoḍaśenopacāreṇa) — with the sixteen-fold rite of worshipwith the sixteen-fold rite of worship·संपूज्य विधिवद्धरम् (saṃpūjya vidhivaddharam) — duly worshipping Haraduly worshipping Hara·पुनः पुनः सुप्रणम्य (punaḥ punaḥ supraṇamya) — bowing again and againbowing again and again·ययौ नित्यं पितुर्गृहम् (yayau nityaṃ piturgṛham) — she would daily go to her father's houseshe would daily go to her father's house

इति संचिन्त्य भूतेशो (iti saṃcintya bhūteśo) — thus reflecting, the lord of beingsthus reflecting, the lord of beings·द्रुतं ध्यानसमाश्रितः (drutaṃ dhyānasamāśritaḥ) — quickly resorted to meditationquickly resorted to meditation·महायोगीश्वरोऽभूद्वै (mahāyogīśvaro'bhūdvai) — indeed became the great lord of yogīsindeed became the great lord of yogīs·महालीलाकरः प्रभुः (mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, performer of great sportive playthe lord, performer of great sportive play

बभूवतुस्तौ सुप्रीतौ (babhūvatustau suprītau) — the two of them became well pleasedthe two of them became well pleased·पार्वतीपरमेश्वरौ (pārvatīparameśvarau) — Pārvatī and ParameśvaraPārvatī and Parameśvara·चक्रतुर्देवकार्यं हि (cakraturdevakāryaṃ hi) — and indeed they took up the work of the godsand indeed they took up the work of the gods·परोपकरणे रतौ (paropakaraṇe ratau) — devoted to helping othersdevoted to helping others
