स गत्वा त्रिजगन्नाथं (sa gatvā trijagannāthaṃ) — he, going to the lord of the three worldshe, going to the lord of the three worlds·प्रणम्य ध्यानतत्परम् (praṇamya dhyānatatparam) — and bowing to him, intent on meditationand bowing to him, intent on meditation·अर्पयामास तनयां कालीं (arpayāmāsa tanayāṃ kālīṃ) — offered his daughter Kālīoffered his daughter Kālī·तस्मै हृदाद्भुताम् (tasmai hṛdādbhutām) — to him, wondrous in her heartto him, wondrous in her heart

फलपुष्पादिकं सर्वं (phalapuṣpādikaṃ sarvaṃ) — all the fruit, flowers and the restall the fruit, flowers and the rest·तत्तदग्रे निधाय सः (tattadagre nidhāya saḥ) — placing each before himplacing each before him·अग्रे कृत्वा सुतां (agre kṛtvā sutāṃ) — and setting his daughter in frontand setting his daughter in front·शम्भुमिदमाह च शैलराट् (śambhumidamāha ca śailarāṭ) — the king of mountains said this to Śambhuthe king of mountains said this to Śambhu

भगवंस्तनया मे (bhagavaṃstanayā me) — O lord, my daughterO lord, my daughter·त्वां सेवितुं चन्द्रशेखरम् (tvāṃ sevituṃ candraśekharam) — is eager to serve you, the moon-crested oneis eager to serve you, the moon-crested one·समुत्सुका समानीता (samutsukā samānītā) — greatly eager, I have brought her heregreatly eager, I have brought her here·त्वदाराधनकांक्षया (tvadārādhanakāṃkṣayā) — out of longing to worship youout of longing to worship you

सखीभ्यां सह नित्यं (sakhībhyāṃ saha nityaṃ) — together with her two companions, forevertogether with her two companions, forever·त्वां सेवतामेव शंकरम् (tvāṃ sevatāmeva śaṃkaram) — let her simply serve you, Śaṅkaralet her simply serve you, Śaṅkara·अनुजानीहि तां नाथ (anujānīhi tāṃ nātha) — give her leave, O lordgive her leave, O lord·मयि ते यद्यनुग्रहः (mayi te yadyanugrahaḥ) — if you have grace toward meif you have grace toward me

अथ तां शंकरोऽपश्यत् (atha tāṃ śaṃkaro'paśyat) — then Śaṅkara beheld herthen Śaṅkara beheld her·प्रथमारूढयौवनाम् (prathamārūḍhayauvanām) — newly come into her first youthnewly come into her first youth·फुल्लेन्दीवरपत्राभां (phullendīvarapatrābhāṃ) — with the hue of a full-blown blue-lotus petalwith the hue of a full-blown blue-lotus petal·पूर्णचन्द्रनिभाननाम् (pūrṇacandranibhānanām) — her face resembling the full moonher face resembling the full moon

समस्तलीलासंस्थान (samastalīlāsaṃsthāna) — the seat of every graceful playthe seat of every graceful play·शुभवेषविजृम्भिकाम् (śubhaveṣavijṛmbhikām) — blossoming forth in an auspicious dressblossoming forth in an auspicious dress·कम्बुग्रीवां विशालाक्षीं (kambugrīvāṃ viśālākṣīṃ) — with a conch-shell neck, wide-eyedwith a conch-shell neck, wide-eyed·चारुकर्णयुगोज्ज्वलाम् (cārukarṇayugojjvalām) — radiant with a lovely pair of earsradiant with a lovely pair of ears

मृणालायतपर्यन्त (mṛṇālāyataparyanta) — extending long like a lotus-stalkextending long like a lotus-stalk·बाहुयुग्ममनोहराम् (bāhuyugmamanoharām) — lovely with her pair of armslovely with her pair of arms·राजीवकुड्मलप्रख्यौ (rājīvakuḍmalaprakhyau) — resembling lotus-budsresembling lotus-buds·घनपीनौ दृढौ स्तनौ (ghanapīnau dṛḍhau stanau) — her two breasts, full, ample and firmher two breasts, full, ample and firm

बिभ्रतीं क्षीणमध्यां च (bibhratīṃ kṣīṇamadhyāṃ ca) — bearing a slender waistbearing a slender waist·त्रिवलीमध्यराजिताम् (trivalīmadhyarājitām) — and a middle adorned with three foldsand a middle adorned with three folds·स्थलपद्मप्रतीकाश (sthalapadmapratīkāśa) — resembling land-lotusesresembling land-lotuses·पादयुग्मविराजिताम् (pādayugmavirājitām) — shining with a pair of feetshining with a pair of feet

ध्यानपंजरनिर्बद्ध (dhyānapaṃjaranirbaddha) — bound fast in the cage of meditationbound fast in the cage of meditation·मुनिमानसमप्यलम् (munimānasamapyalam) — able to shake even a sage's mindable to shake even a sage's mind·दर्शनाद् भ्रंशने शक्तां (darśanād bhraṃśane śaktāṃ) — capable, by the mere sight of her, of causing its fallcapable, by the mere sight of her, of causing its fall·योषिद्गणशिरोमणिम् (yoṣidgaṇaśiromaṇim) — the crest-jewel of all womenthe crest-jewel of all women

दृष्ट्वा तदानीं सकलेश्वरं विभुं (dṛṣṭvā tadānīṃ sakaleśvaraṃ vibhuṃ) — then seeing the mighty lord of allthen seeing the mighty lord of all·तपो जुषाणं विनिमीलितेक्षणम् (tapo juṣāṇaṃ vinimīlitekṣaṇam) — engaged in austerity, his eyes shutengaged in austerity, his eyes shut·कपर्दिनं चन्द्रकलाविभूषणं (kapardinaṃ candrakalāvibhūṣaṇaṃ) — matted-locked, adorned with the crescent moonmatted-locked, adorned with the crescent moon·वेदान्तवेद्यं परमासने स्थितम् (vedāntavedyaṃ paramāsane sthitam) — knowable through Vedānta, seated on his supreme seatknowable through Vedānta, seated on his supreme seat

ववन्द शीर्ष्णा च पुनर्हिमाचलः (vavanda śīrṣṇā ca punarhimācalaḥ) — Himācala again bowed with his headHimācala again bowed with his head·स संशयं प्रापददीनसत्त्वः (sa saṃśayaṃ prāpadadīnasattvaḥ) — though of undaunted spirit, he fell into doubtthough of undaunted spirit, he fell into doubt·उवाच वाक्यं जगदेकबन्धुं (uvāca vākyaṃ jagadekabandhuṃ) — he spoke a word to the sole kinsman of the worldhe spoke a word to the sole kinsman of the world·गिरीशवरो वाक्यविदां वरिष्ठः (girīśavaro vākyavidāṃ variṣṭhaḥ) — the best of mountain-lords, foremost among speakersthe best of mountain-lords, foremost among speakers

देवदेव महादेव (devadeva mahādeva) — O god of gods, O great godO god of gods, O great god·करुणाकर शंकर (karuṇākara śaṃkara) — O fount of compassion, O ŚaṅkaraO fount of compassion, O Śaṅkara·पश्य मां शरणं प्राप्तम् (paśya māṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptam) — look upon me, who have come for refugelook upon me, who have come for refuge·उन्मील्य नयने विभो (unmīlya nayane vibho) — opening your eyes, O mighty oneopening your eyes, O mighty one

शिव शर्व महेशान (śiva śarva maheśāna) — O Śiva, O Śarva, O great rulerO Śiva, O Śarva, O great ruler·जगदानन्दकृत्प्रभो (jagadānandakṛtprabho) — O lord who makes the world joyfulO lord who makes the world joyful·त्वां नतोऽहं महादेव (tvāṃ nato'haṃ mahādeva) — I bow to you, O great godI bow to you, O great god·सर्वापद्विनिवर्तकम् (sarvāpadvinivartakam) — who turns back every calamitywho turns back every calamity

न त्वां जानन्ति देवेश (na tvāṃ jānanti deveśa) — they do not know you, O lord of the godsthey do not know you, O lord of the gods·वेदाः शास्त्राणि कृत्स्नशः (vedāḥ śāstrāṇi kṛtsnaśaḥ) — the Vedas, the śāstras, in their entiretythe Vedas, the śāstras, in their entirety·अतीतो महिमाध्वानं (atīto mahimādhvānaṃ) — the path of your glory lies beyondthe path of your glory lies beyond·तव वाङ्मनसोः सदा (tava vāṅmanasoḥ sadā) — always, speech and mindalways, speech and mind

अतद्व्यावृत्तितस्त्वां वै (atadvyāvṛttitastvāṃ vai) — by excluding what you are notby excluding what you are not·चकितं चकितं सदा (cakitaṃ cakitaṃ sadā) — ever bewildered, again and againever bewildered, again and again·अभिधत्ते श्रुतिः सर्वा (abhidhatte śrutiḥ sarvā) — every scripture describes youevery scripture describes you·परेषां का कथा मता (pareṣāṃ kā kathā matā) — what then is to be said of otherswhat then is to be said of others

जानन्ति बहवो भक्ताः (jānanti bahavo bhaktāḥ) — many devotees know youmany devotees know you·त्वत्कृपां प्राप्य भक्तितः (tvatkṛpāṃ prāpya bhaktitaḥ) — having obtained your grace through devotionhaving obtained your grace through devotion·शरणागतभक्तानां (śaraṇāgatabhaktānāṃ) — for devotees who have taken refugefor devotees who have taken refuge·न कुत्रापि भ्रमादिकम् (na kutrāpi bhramādikam) — there is nowhere any delusion or the likethere is nowhere any delusion or the like

विज्ञप्तिं शृणु मत्प्रीत्या (vijñaptiṃ śṛṇu matprītyā) — hear now, with love for mehear now, with love for me·स्वदासस्य ममाधुना (svadāsasya mamādhunā) — this petition of your own servantthis petition of your own servant·तव देवाज्ञया तात (tava devājñayā tāta) — by your own leave, O deva, O fatherby your own leave, O deva, O father·दीनत्वाद्वर्णयामि हि (dīnatvādvarṇayāmi hi) — humbly I now set it forthhumbly I now set it forth

सभाग्योऽहं महादेव (sabhāgyo'haṃ mahādeva) — I have become fortunate, O great godI have become fortunate, O great god·प्रसादात्तव शंकर (prasādāttava śaṃkara) — through your grace, O Śaṅkarathrough your grace, O Śaṅkara·मत्वा स्वदासं मां नाथ (matvā svadāsaṃ māṃ nātha) — considering me your own servant, O lordconsidering me your own servant, O lord·कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते (kṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te) — show me grace; salutation be to youshow me grace; salutation be to you

प्रत्यहं चागमिष्यामि (pratyahaṃ cāgamiṣyāmi) — and I shall come every dayand I shall come every day·दर्शनार्थं तव प्रभो (darśanārthaṃ tava prabho) — for the sake of your darśana, O lordfor the sake of your darśana, O lord·अनया सुतया स्वामिन् (anayā sutayā svāminn) — with this daughter, O masterwith this daughter, O master·इदेशं दातुमर्हसि (ideśaṃ dātumarhasi) — you should grant this commandyou should grant this command

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य (ityākarṇya vacastasya) — hearing this speech of hishearing this speech of his·उन्मील्य नेत्रे महेश्वरः (unmīlya netre maheśvaraḥ) — Maheśvara, opening his eyesMaheśvara, opening his eyes·त्यक्तध्यानः परामृश्य (tyaktadhyānaḥ parāmṛśya) — setting aside his meditation, and reflectingsetting aside his meditation, and reflecting·देवदेवोऽब्रवीद्वचः (devadevo'bravīdvacaḥ) — the god of gods spoke these wordsthe god of gods spoke these words

आगन्तव्यं त्वया नित्यं (āgantavyaṃ tvayā nityaṃ) — you should come every dayyou should come every day·दर्शनार्थं ममाचल (darśanārthaṃ mamācala) — for my darśana, O mountainfor my darśana, O mountain·कुमारीं सदने स्थाप्य (kumārīṃ sadane sthāpya) — leaving the young girl at homeleaving the young girl at home·नान्यथा मम दर्शनम् (nānyathā mama darśanam) — otherwise there is no darśana of meotherwise there is no darśana of me

महेशवचनं श्रुत्वा (maheśavacanaṃ śrutvā) — hearing Maheśa's such a wordhearing Maheśa's such a word·शिवातातस्तथाविधम् (śivātātastathāvidham) — Śivā's father, of that kindŚivā's father, of that kind·अचलः प्रत्युवाचेदं (acalaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ) — the mountain replied thusthe mountain replied thus·गिरिशं नतकंधरः (giriśaṃ natakaṃdharaḥ) — to Giriśa, his neck bowedto Giriśa, his neck bowed

कस्मान्मयानया सार्धं (kasmānmayānayā sārdhaṃ) — for what reason, with herfor what reason, with her·नागन्तव्यं तदुच्यताम् (nāgantavyaṃ taducyatām) — must I not come — let that be toldmust I not come — let that be told·सेवने किमयोग्येयं (sevane kimayogyeyaṃ) — is she unfit for your serviceis she unfit for your service·नाहं वेद्म्यत्र कारणम् (nāhaṃ vedmyatra kāraṇam) — I do not know the reason for thisI do not know the reason for this

ततोऽब्रवीद्गिरिं शंभुः (tato'bravīdgiriṃ śaṃbhuḥ) — then Śambhu said to the mountainthen Śambhu said to the mountain·प्रहसन्वृषभध्वजः (prahasanvṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) — Vṛṣabhadhvaja, laughingVṛṣabhadhvaja, laughing·लोकाचारं विशेषेण (lokācāraṃ viśeṣeṇa) — especially the custom of the worldespecially the custom of the world·दर्शयन्हि कुयोगिनाम् (darśayanhi kuyoginām) — displaying, of false yogisdisplaying, of false yogis

इयं कुमारी सुश्रोणी (iyaṃ kumārī suśroṇī) — this maiden, of lovely hipsthis maiden, of lovely hips·तन्वी चन्द्रानना शुभा (tanvī candrānanā śubhā) — slender, moon-faced, auspiciousslender, moon-faced, auspicious·नानेतव्या मत्समीपे (nānetavyā matsamīpe) — is not to be brought near meis not to be brought near me·वारयामि पुनः पुनः (vārayāmi punaḥ punaḥ) — I forbid it again and againI forbid it again and again

मायारूपा स्मृता नारी (māyārūpā smṛtā nārī) — woman is held to be māyā incarnatewoman is held to be māyā incarnate·विद्भिर्वेदपारगैः (vidbhirvedapāragaiḥ) — by the wise who have crossed to the far shore of the Vedasby the wise who have crossed to the far shore of the Vedas·युवती तु विशेषेण (yuvatī tu viśeṣeṇa) — and especially a young womanand especially a young woman·विघ्नकत्री तपस्विनाम् (vighnakatrī tapasvinām) — is a maker of obstacles for asceticsis a maker of obstacles for ascetics

अहं तपस्वी योगी च (ahaṃ tapasvī yogī ca) — I am an ascetic and a yogīI am an ascetic and a yogī·निर्लिप्तो मायया सदा (nirlipto māyayā sadā) — ever untouched by māyāever untouched by māyā·प्रयोजनं युवत्या वै (prayojanaṃ yuvatyā vai) — what use, indeed, with a youngwhat use, indeed, with a young·स्त्रिया किं मेऽस्ति भूधर (striyā kiṃ me'sti bhūdhara) — woman have I, O lord of the earthwoman have I, O lord of the earth

एवं पुनर्न वक्तव्यं (evaṃ punarna vaktavyaṃ) — thus this should not be said againthus this should not be said again·तपस्विवरसंश्रित (tapasvivarasaṃśrita) — O refuge of the best of asceticsO refuge of the best of ascetics·वेदधर्मप्रवीणस्त्वं (vedadharmapravīṇastvaṃ) — you are skilled in Vedic dharmayou are skilled in Vedic dharma·यतो ज्ञानिवरो बुधः (yato jñānivaro budhaḥ) — since you are the best of the wise, a learned onesince you are the best of the wise, a learned one

भवत्यचल तत्सङ्गात् (bhavatyacala tatsaṅgāt) — it comes, O mountain, from association with herit comes, O mountain, from association with her·विषयोत्पत्तिराशु वै (viṣayotpattirāśu vai) — the rise of desire for sense-objects, swiftly indeedthe rise of desire for sense-objects, swiftly indeed·विनश्यति च वैराग्यं (vinaśyati ca vairāgyaṃ) — and dispassion perishesand dispassion perishes·ततो भ्रश्यति सत्तपः (tato bhraśyati sattapaḥ) — from that, true austerity falls awayfrom that, true austerity falls away

अतस्तपस्विना शैल (atastapasvinā śaila) — therefore, O mountain, by an ascetictherefore, O mountain, by an ascetic·न कार्या स्त्रीषु सङ्गतिः (na kāryā strīṣu saṅgatiḥ) — association with women should not be madeassociation with women should not be made·महाविषयमूलं सा (mahāviṣayamūlaṃ sā) — she is the root of great sense-objectsshe is the root of great sense-objects·ज्ञानवैराग्यनाशिनी (jñānavairāgyanāśinī) — the destroyer of knowledge and dispassionthe destroyer of knowledge and dispassion

इत्याद्युक्त्वा बहुतरं (ityādyuktvā bahutaraṃ) — having said this and much morehaving said this and much more·महायोगी महेश्वरः (mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ) — the great yogī, Maheśvarathe great yogī, Maheśvara·विरराम गिरीशं तं (virarāma girīśaṃ taṃ) — to that lord of the mountain, fell silentto that lord of the mountain, fell silent·महायोगिवरः प्रभुः (mahāyogivaraḥ prabhuḥ) — the lord, best of great yogīsthe lord, best of great yogīs

एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य शंभोः (etacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya śaṃbhoḥ) — hearing this speech of that Śambhuhearing this speech of that Śambhu·निरामयं निःस्पृहं निष्ठुरं च (nirāmayaṃ niḥspṛhaṃ niṣṭhuraṃ ca) — untroubled, desireless, and harshuntroubled, desireless, and harsh·कालीतातश्चकितोऽभूत्सुरर्षे (kālītātaścakito'bhūtsurarṣe) — O sage among gods, Kālī's father became startledO sage among gods, Kālī's father became startled·तद्वत्किंचिद्व्याकुलश्चास तूष्णीम् (tadvatkiṃcidvyākulaścāsa tūṣṇīm) — and, somewhat agitated, sat silent likewiseand, somewhat agitated, sat silent likewise

तपस्विनोक्तं वचनं निशम्य (tapasvinoktaṃ vacanaṃ niśamya) — hearing the word spoken by the ascetichearing the word spoken by the ascetic·तथा गिरीशं चकितं विचार्य (tathā girīśaṃ cakitaṃ vicārya) — and seeing the mountain-lord thus startledand seeing the mountain-lord thus startled·अतः प्रणम्यैव शिवं भवानी (ataḥ praṇamyaiva śivaṃ bhavānī) — therefore Bhavānī, having bowed to Śivatherefore Bhavānī, having bowed to Śiva·जगाद वाक्यं विशदं तदानीम् (jagāda vākyaṃ viśadaṃ tadānīm) — then spoke a clear wordthen spoke a clear word
