तपोरत तपःस्थान (taporata tapaḥsthāna) — O delighter in austerity, O seat of austerityO delighter in austerity, O seat of austerity·सुतपःफलदायिने (sutapaḥphaladāyine) — to the giver of the fruit of good austerityto the giver of the fruit of good austerity·तपःप्रियाय शान्ताय (tapaḥpriyāya śāntāya) — to the lover of austerity, the tranquil oneto the lover of austerity, the tranquil one·नमस्ते ब्रह्मरूपिणे (namaste brahmarūpiṇe) — salutation to you, whose form is Brahmansalutation to you, whose form is Brahman

व्यवहारकरायैव (vyavahārakarāyaiva) — to the very doer of worldly transactionto the very doer of worldly transaction·लोकाचारकराय ते (lokācārakarāya te) — to you, the doer of the world's customto you, the doer of the world's custom·सगुणाय परेशाय (saguṇāya pareśāya) — to the one with qualities, the supreme lordto the one with qualities, the supreme lord·नमोऽस्तु परमात्मने (namo'stu paramātmane) — salutation be to the supreme selfsalutation be to the supreme self

लीला तव महेश (līlā tava maheśa) — your play, O great lordyour play, O great lord·अनावेद्या साधुसुखप्रदा (anāvedyā sādhusukhapradā) — is unknowable, giving joy to the virtuousis unknowable, giving joy to the virtuous·भक्ताधीनस्वरूपोऽसि (bhaktādhīnasvarūpo'si) — your very form is subject to your devoteesyour very form is subject to your devotees·भक्तवश्यो हि कर्मकृत् (bhaktavaśyo hi karmakṛt) — indeed, controlled by devotees, you actindeed, controlled by devotees, you act

मम भाग्योदयादत्र (mama bhāgyodayādatra) — here, from the rise of my fortunehere, from the rise of my fortune·त्वमागत इह प्रभो (tvamāgata iha prabho) — you, O lord, have come hereyou, O lord, have come here·सनाथं कृतवान्मां त्वं (sanāthaṃ kṛtavānmāṃ tvaṃ) — you have made me one with a protectoryou have made me one with a protector·वर्णितो दीनवत्सलः (varṇito dīnavatsalaḥ) — you are called the lover of the lowlyyou are called the lover of the lowly

अद्य मे सफलं जन्म (adya me saphalaṃ janma) — today my birth is fruitfultoday my birth is fruitful·सफलं जीवनं मम (saphalaṃ jīvanaṃ mama) — my life is fruitfulmy life is fruitful·अद्य मे सफलं सर्वं (adya me saphalaṃ sarvaṃ) — today everything of mine is fruitfultoday everything of mine is fruitful·यदत्र त्वं समागतः (yadatra tvaṃ samāgataḥ) — since you have arrived heresince you have arrived here

ज्ञात्वा मां दासमव्यग्रम् (jñātvā māṃ dāsamavyagram) — knowing me, undisturbed, as your servantknowing me, undisturbed, as your servant·आज्ञां देहि महेश्वर (ājñāṃ dehi maheśvara) — give your command, O great lordgive your command, O great lord·त्वत्सेवां च महाप्रीत्या (tvatsevāṃ ca mahāprītyā) — and your service, with great loveand your service, with great love·कुर्यामहमनन्यधीः (kuryāmahamananyadhīḥ) — I would perform, my mind on nothing elseI would perform, my mind on nothing else

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य (ityākarṇya vacastasya) — hearing this speech of hishearing this speech of his·गिरीशस्य महेश्वरः (girīśasya maheśvaraḥ) — the lord of the mountain, Maheśvarathe lord of the mountain, Maheśvara·किंचिदुन्मील्य नेत्रे च (kiṃcidunmīlya netre ca) — opening his eyes a littleopening his eyes a little·ददर्श सगणं गिरिम् (dadarśa sagaṇaṃ girim) — beheld the mountain-lord with his retinuebeheld the mountain-lord with his retinue

तव पृष्ठे तपस्तनुं (tava pṛṣṭhe tapastanuṃ) — on your slope, to perform austerityon your slope, to perform austerity·रहस्यमहमागतः (rahasyamahamāgataḥ) — in seclusion, I have comein seclusion, I have come·यथा न कोऽपि निकटं (yathā na ko'pi nikaṭaṃ) — so that no one may come nearso that no one may come near·समायातु तथा कुरु (samāyātu tathā kuru) — so arrange itso arrange it

त्वं महात्मा तपोधामा (tvaṃ mahātmā tapodhāmā) — you are the great soul, the abode of austerityyou are the great soul, the abode of austerity·मुनीनां च सदाश्रयः (munīnāṃ ca sadāśrayaḥ) — and the constant refuge of sagesand the constant refuge of sages·देवानां राक्षसानां च (devānāṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca) — of gods and rākṣasasof gods and rākṣasas·परेषां च महात्मनाम् (pareṣāṃ ca mahātmanām) — and of other great soulsand of other great souls

सदावासो द्विजादीनां (sadāvāso dvijādīnāṃ) — the constant dwelling-place of brāhmaṇas and othersthe constant dwelling-place of brāhmaṇas and others·गङ्गापूतश्च नित्यदा (gaṅgāpūtaśca nityadā) — and ever purified by the Gaṅgāand ever purified by the Gaṅgā·परोपकारी सर्वेषां (paropakārī sarveṣāṃ) — the benefactor of allthe benefactor of all·गिरीणामधिपः प्रभुः (girīṇāmadhipaḥ prabhuḥ) — the mighty lord of the mountainsthe mighty lord of the mountains

अहं तपश्चराम्यत्र (ahaṃ tapaścarāmyatra) — here I shall practise austerityhere I shall practise austerity·गङ्गावतरणे स्थले (gaṅgāvataraṇe sthale) — at the place of the Gaṅgā's descentat the place of the Gaṅgā's descent·आश्रितस्तव सुप्रीतो (āśritastava suprīto) — resorting to you, well pleasedresorting to you, well pleased·गिरिराज यतात्मवान् (girirāja yatātmavān) — O king of mountains, my mind restrainedO king of mountains, my mind restrained

निर्विघ्नं मे तपश्चात्र (nirvighnaṃ me tapaścātra) — that my austerity here may be without obstaclethat my austerity here may be without obstacle·हेतुना येन शैलप (hetunā yena śailapa) — by whatever means, O lord of the mountainby whatever means, O lord of the mountain·सर्वथा हि गिरिश्रेष्ठ (sarvathā hi giriśreṣṭha) — in every way indeed, O best of mountainsin every way indeed, O best of mountains·सुयत्नं कुरु साम्प्रतम् (suyatnaṃ kuru sāmpratam) — make good effort nowmake good effort now

ममेदमेव परमं (mamedameva paramaṃ) — this alone is the supremethis alone is the supreme·सेवनं पर्वतोत्तम (sevanaṃ parvatottama) — service to me, O best of mountainsservice to me, O best of mountains·स्वगृहं गच्छ सत्प्रीत्या (svagṛhaṃ gaccha satprītyā) — go to your own home, with true lovego to your own home, with true love·तत्संपादय यत्नतः (tatsaṃpādaya yatnataḥ) — and accomplish it with effortand accomplish it with effort

इत्युक्त्वा जगतां नाथः (ityuktvā jagatāṃ nāthaḥ) — having said this, the lord of the universehaving said this, the lord of the universe·तूष्णीमास स सूतिकृत् (tūṣṇīmāsa sa sūtikṛt) — the creator, fell silentthe creator, fell silent·गिरिराजस्तदा शम्भुं (girirājastadā śambhuṃ) — then the mountain-king, to Śambhuthen the mountain-king, to Śambhu·प्रणयादिदमब्रवीत् (praṇayādidamabravīt) — lovingly said thislovingly said this

पूजितोऽसि जगन्नाथ (pūjito'si jagannātha) — you have been worshipped, O lord of the universeyou have been worshipped, O lord of the universe·मया त्वं परमेश्वर (mayā tvaṃ parameśvara) — by me, O supreme lordby me, O supreme lord·स्वागतेनाद्य विषये (svāgatenādya viṣaye) — with welcome, today, present in my domainwith welcome, today, present in my domain·स्थितं त्वां प्रार्थयामि किम् (sthitaṃ tvāṃ prārthayāmi kim) — what shall I ask of youwhat shall I ask of you

महता तपसा त्वं हि (mahatā tapasā tvaṃ hi) — by great austerity, indeed, youby great austerity, indeed, you·देवैर्यत्नपराश्रितैः (devairyatnaparāśritaiḥ) — by gods resorting to the utmost effortby gods resorting to the utmost effort·न प्राप्यसे महेशान (na prāpyase maheśāna) — are not attained, O great lordare not attained, O great lord·स त्वं स्वयमुपस्थितः (sa tvaṃ svayamupasthitaḥ) — yet you have come here of your own accordyet you have come here of your own accord

मत्तोऽप्यन्यतमो नास्ति (matto'pyanyatamo nāsti) — there is none more fortunate than Ithere is none more fortunate than I·न मत्तोऽन्योऽस्ति पुण्यवान् (na matto'nyo'sti puṇyavān) — and none other more meritorious than Iand none other more meritorious than I·भवानिति च मत्पृष्ठे (bhavāniti ca matpṛṣṭhe) — since you, upon my slopesince you, upon my slope·तपसे समुपस्थितः (tapase samupasthitaḥ) — have arrived for austerityhave arrived for austerity

देवेन्द्रादधिकं मन्ये (devendrādadhikaṃ manye) — I consider [myself] greater than the king of the godsI consider [myself] greater than the king of the gods·स्वात्मानं परमेश्वर (svātmānaṃ parameśvara) — my own self, O supreme lordmy own self, O supreme lord·सगणेन त्वयागत्य (sagaṇena tvayāgatya) — since you, with your retinue, having comesince you, with your retinue, having come·कृतोऽनुग्रहभागहम् (kṛto'nugrahabhāgaham) — have made me a recipient of gracehave made me a recipient of grace

निर्विघ्नं कुरु देवेश (nirvighnaṃ kuru deveśa) — perform without obstacle, O lord of godsperform without obstacle, O lord of gods·स्वतन्त्रः परमं तपः (svatantraḥ paramaṃ tapaḥ) — independent, your supreme austerityindependent, your supreme austerity·करिष्येऽहं तथा सेवां (kariṣye'haṃ tathā sevāṃ) — and I shall likewise render serviceand I shall likewise render service·दासोऽहं ते सदा प्रभो (dāso'haṃ te sadā prabho) — I am ever your servant, O lordI am ever your servant, O lord

इत्युक्त्वा गिरिराजोऽसौ (ityuktvā girirājo'sau) — having said this, that mountain-kinghaving said this, that mountain-king·स्वं वेश्म द्रुतमागतः (svaṃ veśma drutamāgataḥ) — quickly came to his own housequickly came to his own house·वृत्तान्तं तं समाचख्यौ (vṛttāntaṃ taṃ samācakhyau) — and related that whole accountand related that whole account·प्रियायै च समादरात् (priyāyai ca samādarāt) — to his beloved wife, with great respectto his beloved wife, with great respect

नीयमानान् परीवारान् (nīyamānān parīvārān) — the attendants being brought alongthe attendants being brought along·स्वगणानपि नारद (svagaṇānapi nārada) — and also his own gaṇas, O Nāradaand also his own gaṇas, O Nārada·समाहूयाखिलान् (samāhūyākhilān) — having summoned all of themhaving summoned all of them·शैलपतिः प्रोवाच तत्त्वतः (śailapatiḥ provāca tattvataḥ) — the lord of the mountain spoke trulythe lord of the mountain spoke truly

अद्यप्रभृति नो यातु (adyaprabhṛti no yātu) — from today, let no one gofrom today, let no one go·कोऽपि गङ्गावतारणम् (ko'pi gaṅgāvatāraṇam) — to Gaṅgāvatāraṇa, whoever it beto Gaṅgāvatāraṇa, whoever it be·मच्छासनेन मत्प्रस्थं (macchāsanena matprasthaṃ) — by my own command, my [own] peakby my own command, my [own] peak·सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम् (satyametad bravīmyaham) — this I speak trulythis I speak truly

गमिष्यति जनः कश्चित् (gamiṣyati janaḥ kaścit) — if some person will goif some person will go·तत्र चेत्तं महाखलम् (tatra cettaṃ mahākhalam) — there, that great wretchthere, that great wretch·दण्डयिष्ये विशेषेण (daṇḍayiṣye viśeṣeṇa) — I shall punish especiallyI shall punish especially·सत्यमेतन्मयोदितम् (satyametanmayoditam) — this has been truly declared by methis has been truly declared by me
