भस्मीभूते स्मरे (bhasmībhūte smare) — when Smara was reduced to asheswhen Smara was reduced to ashes·शंभुतृतीयनयनाग्निना (śaṃbhutṛtīyanayanāgninā) — by the fire of Śambhu's third eyeby the fire of Śambhu's third eye·तस्मिन्प्रविष्टे जलधौ (tasminpraviṣṭe jaladhau) — and when that [fire] had entered the oceanand when that [fire] had entered the ocean·वद त्वं किमभूत्ततः (vada tvaṃ kimabhūttataḥ) — tell me — what happened thentell me — what happened then

किं चकार ततो देवी (kiṃ cakāra tato devī) — what then did the goddess dowhat then did the goddess do·पार्वती कुधरात्मजा (pārvatī kudharātmajā) — Pārvatī, daughter of the mountainPārvatī, daughter of the mountain·गता कुत्र सखीभ्यां सा (gatā kutra sakhībhyāṃ sā) — where did she go, with her two companionswhere did she go, with her two companions·तद्वदाद्य दयानिधे (tadvadādya dayānidhe) — tell me that now, O ocean of compassiontell me that now, O ocean of compassion

शृणु तात महाप्राज्ञ (śṛṇu tāta mahāprājña) — hear, dear one, O greatly wisehear, dear one, O greatly wise·चरितं शशिमौलिनः (caritaṃ śaśimaulinaḥ) — the deeds of the moon-crested onethe deeds of the moon-crested one·महोपकारकस्यैव (mahopakārakasyaiva) — of him who is a great benefactorof him who is a great benefactor·स्वामिनो मम चादरात् (svāmino mama cādarāt) — my own lord — with due respectmy own lord — with due respect

यदादहच्छंभुनेत्रोद्भवो (yadādahacchaṃbhunetrodbhavo) — when that which arose from Śambhu's eye burntwhen that which arose from Śambhu's eye burnt·हि मदनं शुचिः (hi madanaṃ śuciḥ) — that pure [fire indeed burnt] Madanathat pure [fire indeed burnt] Madana·महाशब्दोऽद्भुतोऽभूद्वै (mahāśabdo'dbhuto'bhūdvai) — a great, wondrous sound then arosea great, wondrous sound then arose·येनाकाशः प्रपूरितः (yenākāśaḥ prapūritaḥ) — by which the sky was filled fullby which the sky was filled full

तेन शब्देन महता (tena śabdena mahatā) — by that great soundby that great sound·कामं दग्धं समीक्ष्य च (kāmaṃ dagdhaṃ samīkṣya ca) — and seeing Kāma burntand seeing Kāma burnt·सखीभ्यां सह भीता सा (sakhībhyāṃ saha bhītā sā) — she, frightened, together with her two companionsshe, frightened, together with her two companions·ययौ स्वगृहमाकुला (yayau svagṛhamākulā) — went, agitated, to her own housewent, agitated, to her own house

तेन शब्देन हिमवान् (tena śabdena himavān) — by that sound, Himavatby that sound, Himavat·परिवारसमन्वितः (parivārasamanvitaḥ) — together with his familytogether with his family·विस्मितोऽभूदतिक्लिष्टः (vismito'bhūdatikliṣṭaḥ) — was astonished, and greatly distressedwas astonished, and greatly distressed·सुतां स्मृत्वा गतां ततः (sutāṃ smṛtvā gatāṃ tataḥ) — remembering his daughter, who had gone thereremembering his daughter, who had gone there

जगाम शोकं शैलेशो (jagāma śokaṃ śaileśo) — the lord of mountains fell into griefthe lord of mountains fell into grief·सुतां दृष्ट्वातिविह्वलाम् (sutāṃ dṛṣṭvātivihvalām) — seeing his daughter utterly overwhelmedseeing his daughter utterly overwhelmed·रुदन्तीं शंभुविरहात् (rudantīṃ śaṃbhuvirahāt) — weeping from separation from Śambhuweeping from separation from Śambhu·आससादाचलेश्वरः (āsasādācaleśvaraḥ) — the lord of the mountain reached herthe lord of the mountain reached her

आसाद्य पाणिना तस्या (āsādya pāṇinā tasyā) — reaching her, and with his hand herreaching her, and with his hand her·मार्जयन्नयनद्वयम् (mārjayannayanadvayam) — wiping her two eyeswiping her two eyes·मा बिभीहि शिवेऽरोदीः (mā bibhīhi śive'rodīḥ) — do not fear, O Śivā, do not weepdo not fear, O Śivā, do not weep·इत्युक्त्वा तां तदाग्रहीत् (ityuktvā tāṃ tadāgrahīt) — having said this, he then took hold of herhaving said this, he then took hold of her

क्रोडे कृत्वा सुतां शीघ्रं (kroḍe kṛtvā sutāṃ śīghraṃ) — quickly taking his daughter into his lapquickly taking his daughter into his lap·हिमवानचलेश्वरः (himavānacaleśvaraḥ) — Himavat, the lord of the mountainHimavat, the lord of the mountain·स्वमालयमथानिन्ये (svamālayamathāninye) — then brought her to his own dwellingthen brought her to his own dwelling·सांत्वयन्नतिविह्वलाम् (sāṃtvayannativihvalām) — consoling her, utterly overwhelmed as she wasconsoling her, utterly overwhelmed as she was

अंतर्हिते स्मरं दग्ध्वा (aṃtarhite smaraṃ dagdhvā) — when Hara, having burnt Smara, had vanishedwhen Hara, having burnt Smara, had vanished·हरे तद्विरहाच्छिवा (hare tadvirahācchivā) — Śivā, from separation from himŚivā, from separation from him·विकलाभूद् भृशं सा वै (vikalābhūd bhṛśaṃ sā vai) — became greatly distraught, indeedbecame greatly distraught, indeed·लेभे शर्म न कुत्रचित् (lebhe śarma na kutracit) — and found peace nowhere at alland found peace nowhere at all

पितुर्गृहं तदा गत्वा (piturgṛhaṃ tadā gatvā) — then having gone to her father's housethen having gone to her father's house·मिलित्वा मातरं शिवा (militvā mātaraṃ śivā) — and having met her mother, Śivāand having met her mother, Śivā·पुनर्जातं तदा मेने (punarjātaṃ tadā mene) — then felt as though she had been born againthen felt as though she had been born again·स्वात्मानं सा धरात्मजा (svātmānaṃ sā dharātmajā) — she, the daughter of the mountain, herselfshe, the daughter of the mountain, herself

निनिंद च स्वरूपं सा (niniṃda ca svarūpaṃ sā) — and she condemned her own beautyand she condemned her own beauty·हा हतास्मीत्यथाब्रवीत् (hā hatāsmītyathābravīt) — and said, "Alas, I am undone!"and said, "Alas, I am undone!"·सखीभिर्बोधिता चापि (sakhībhirbodhitā cāpi) — and even though comforted by her companionsand even though comforted by her companions·न बुबोध गिरीन्द्रजा (na bubodha girīndrajā) — the daughter of the mountain-king would not be consoledthe daughter of the mountain-king would not be consoled

स्वपती च पिबंती च (svapatī ca pibaṃtī ca) — sleeping, and drinkingsleeping, and drinking·सा स्नाती गच्छती शिवा (sā snātī gacchatī śivā) — she, Śivā, bathing, walkingshe, Śivā, bathing, walking·तिष्ठन्ती च सखीमध्ये (tiṣṭhantī ca sakhīmadhye) — and sitting among her friendsand sitting among her friends·न किंचित्सुखमाप ह (na kiṃcitsukhamāpa ha) — she found not the slightest happinessshe found not the slightest happiness

धिक्स्वरूपं मदीयं च (dhiksvarūpaṃ madīyaṃ ca) — shame on my own beautyshame on my own beauty·तथा जन्म च कर्म च (tathā janma ca karma ca) — and my birth and my deeds tooand my birth and my deeds too·इति ब्रुवंती सततं (iti bruvaṃtī satataṃ) — saying this continuallysaying this continually·स्मरन्ती हरचेष्टितम् (smarantī haraceṣṭitam) — remembering Hara's every actremembering Hara's every act

एवं सा पार्वती (evaṃ sā pārvatī) — thus that Pārvatīthus that Pārvatī·शंभुविरहात् क्लिष्टमानसा (śaṃbhuvirahāt kliṣṭamānasā) — her mind distressed by separation from Śambhuher mind distressed by separation from Śambhu·सुखं न लेभे किंचिद्वा (sukhaṃ na lebhe kiṃcidvā) — found not the slightest happinessfound not the slightest happiness·ब्रवीच्छिवशिवेति च (bravīcchivaśiveti ca) — and said "Śiva, Śiva" again and againand said "Śiva, Śiva" again and again

निवसंती पितुर्गेहे (nivasaṃtī piturgehe) — dwelling in her father's housedwelling in her father's house·पिनाकिगतचेतना (pinākigatacetanā) — her mind gone to the wielder of the Pinākaher mind gone to the wielder of the Pināka·शुशोचाथ शिवा तात (śuśocātha śivā tāta) — Śivā grieved then, dear sonŚivā grieved then, dear son·मुमोह च मुहुर्मुहुः (mumoha ca muhurmuhuḥ) — and swooned again and againand swooned again and again

शैलाधिराजोऽप्यथ मेनकापि (śailādhirājo'pyatha menakāpi) — the lord of mountains, and Menakā toothe lord of mountains, and Menakā too·मैनाकमुख्यास्तनयाश्च सर्वे (mainākamukhyāstanayāśca sarve) — and all the sons headed by Mainākaand all the sons headed by Maināka·तां सांत्वयामासुरदीनसत्त्वा (tāṃ sāṃtvayāmāsuradīnasattvā) — consoled her, being magnanimous of spiritconsoled her, being magnanimous of spirit·हरं विसस्मार तथापि नो सा (haraṃ visasmāra tathāpi no sā) — yet even so she did not forget Harayet even so she did not forget Hara

अथ देवमुने धीमन् (atha devamune dhīman) — then, O sage of the gods, O wise onethen, O sage of the gods, O wise one·हिमवत्प्रस्तरे तदा (himavatprastare tadā) — upon a slope of the Himalaya, thenupon a slope of the Himalaya, then·नियोजितो बलभिदा (niyojito balabhidā) — directed by Indra, breaker of Baladirected by Indra, breaker of Bala·गमस्त्वं कामचारतः (gamastvaṃ kāmacārataḥ) — you arrived, wandering at willyou arrived, wandering at will

ततस्त्वं पूजितस्तेन (tatastvaṃ pūjitastena) — then you were honoured by himthen you were honoured by him·भूधरेण महात्मना (bhūdhareṇa mahātmanā) — the great-souled lord of the mountainthe great-souled lord of the mountain·कुशलं पृष्टवांस्तं वै (kuśalaṃ pṛṣṭavāṃstaṃ vai) — you asked him of his welfare, indeedyou asked him of his welfare, indeed·तदाविष्टो वरासने (tadāviṣṭo varāsane) — seated then upon an excellent seatseated then upon an excellent seat

ततः प्रोवाच शैलेशः (tataḥ provāca śaileśaḥ) — then the lord of mountains relatedthen the lord of mountains related·कन्याचरितमादितः (kanyācaritamāditaḥ) — his daughter's story from the beginninghis daughter's story from the beginning·हरसेवान्वितं (harasevānvitaṃ) — her devotion in serving Haraher devotion in serving Hara·कामदहनं च हरेण ह (kāmadahanaṃ ca hareṇa ha) — and Kāma's burning by Haraand Kāma's burning by Hara

श्रुत्वावोचो मुने त्वं तु (śrutvāvoco mune tvaṃ tu) — hearing this, O sage, you then saidhearing this, O sage, you then said·तं शैलेशं शिवं भज (taṃ śaileśaṃ śivaṃ bhaja) — to that lord of mountains, "worship Śiva"to that lord of mountains, "worship Śiva"·तमामंत्र्योदतिष्ठस्त्वं (tamāmaṃtryodatiṣṭhastvaṃ) — taking leave of him, you then rosetaking leave of him, you then rose·संस्मृत्य मनसा शिवम् (saṃsmṛtya manasā śivam) — remembering Śiva in your mindremembering Śiva in your mind

तं समुत्सृज्य रहसि (taṃ samutsṛjya rahasi) — leaving him, in solitudeleaving him, in solitude·कालीं तामगमस्त्वरा (kālīṃ tāmagamastvarā) — you swiftly went to that Kālīyou swiftly went to that Kālī·लोकोपकारको ज्ञानी (lokopakārako jñānī) — a benefactor of the world, a knowera benefactor of the world, a knower·त्वं मुने शिववल्लभः (tvaṃ mune śivavallabhaḥ) — you, O sage, dear to Śivayou, O sage, dear to Śiva

आसाद्य कालीं संबोध्य (āsādya kālīṃ saṃbodhya) — reaching Kālī, and addressing herreaching Kālī, and addressing her·तद्धिते स्थित आदरात् (taddhite sthita ādarāt) — established in her welfare, with respectestablished in her welfare, with respect·अवोचस्त्वं वचस्तथ्यं (avocastvaṃ vacastathyaṃ) — you spoke a true wordyou spoke a true word·सर्वेषां ज्ञानिनां वरः (sarveṣāṃ jñānināṃ varaḥ) — you, the best of all the wiseyou, the best of all the wise

शृणु कालि वचो मे हि (śṛṇu kāli vaco me hi) — hear, O Kālī, my word indeedhear, O Kālī, my word indeed·सत्यं वच्मि दयारतः (satyaṃ vacmi dayārataḥ) — I speak the truth, intent on compassionI speak the truth, intent on compassion·सर्वथा ते हितकरं (sarvathā te hitakaraṃ) — wholly beneficial to youwholly beneficial to you·निर्विकारं सुकामदम् (nirvikāraṃ sukāmadam) — free from fault, granting good desiresfree from fault, granting good desires

सेवितश्च महादेवः (sevitaśca mahādevaḥ) — and Mahādeva was servedand Mahādeva was served·त्वयेह तपसा विना (tvayeha tapasā vinā) — by you here, without true austerityby you here, without true austerity·गर्ववत्या यदध्वंसी (garvavatyā yadadhvaṃsī) — you being full of pride — which the destroyeryou being full of pride — which the destroyer·हीनानुग्रहकारकः (hīnānugrahakārakaḥ) — the doer of grace to the lowly, [has undone]the doer of grace to the lowly, [has undone]

विरक्तश्च स ते स्वामी (viraktaśca sa te svāmī) — and that lord of yours, dispassionateand that lord of yours, dispassionate·महायोगी महेश्वरः (mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ) — the great yogi, Maheśvarathe great yogi, Maheśvara·विसृष्टवान्स्मरं दग्ध्वा (visṛṣṭavānsmaraṃ dagdhvā) — having burnt Smara, lefthaving burnt Smara, left·त्वां शिवे भक्तवत्सलः (tvāṃ śive bhaktavatsalaḥ) — you, O Śivā — he who is fond of his devoteesyou, O Śivā — he who is fond of his devotees

तस्मात्त्वं सुतपोयुक्ता (tasmāttvaṃ sutapoyuktā) — therefore, joined to true austeritytherefore, joined to true austerity·चिरमाराधयेश्वरम् (ciramārādhayeśvaram) — worship the Lord for a long timeworship the Lord for a long time·तपसा संस्कृतां रुद्रः (tapasā saṃskṛtāṃ rudraḥ) — Rudra, [you] refined by austerityRudra, [you] refined by austerity·स द्वितीयां करिष्यति (sa dvitīyāṃ kariṣyati) — he will make his consorthe will make his consort

त्वं चापि शंकरं शम्भुं (tvaṃ cāpi śaṃkaraṃ śambhuṃ) — and you too, Śaṅkara, Śambhuand you too, Śaṅkara, Śambhu·न त्यक्ष्यसि कदाचन (na tyakṣyasi kadācana) — will never abandonwill never abandon·नान्यं पतिं हठाद्देवि (nānyaṃ patiṃ haṭhāddevi) — nor, O goddess, by force take another husbandnor, O goddess, by force take another husband·ग्रहीष्यसि शिवादृते (grahīṣyasi śivādṛte) — other than Śivaother than Śiva

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्ते हि (ityākarṇya vacaste hi) — hearing your words indeedhearing your words indeed·मुने सा भूधरात्मजा (mune sā bhūdharātmajā) — O sage, she, the daughter of the mountainO sage, she, the daughter of the mountain·किंचिदुच्छ्वसिता काली (kiṃciducchvasitā kālī) — Kālī, somewhat relievedKālī, somewhat relieved·प्राहत्वां सांजलिर्मुदा (prāhatvāṃ sāṃjalirmudā) — spoke to you, hands joined, with joyspoke to you, hands joined, with joy

त्वं तु सर्वज्ञ जगताम् (tvaṃ tu sarvajña jagatām) — you indeed, O all-knowing one, of all the worldsyou indeed, O all-knowing one, of all the worlds·उपकारकर प्रभो (upakārakara prabho) — a benefactor, O Lorda benefactor, O Lord·रुद्रस्याराधनार्थाय (rudrasyārādhanārthāya) — for the sake of Rudra's worshipfor the sake of Rudra's worship·मंत्रं देहि मुने हि मे (maṃtraṃ dehi mune hi me) — give me a mantra, O sagegive me a mantra, O sage

न सिध्यति क्रिया कापि (na sidhyati kriyā kāpi) — no rite whatever succeedsno rite whatever succeeds·सर्वेषां सद्गुरुं विना (sarveṣāṃ sadguruṃ vinā) — for anyone, without a true teacherfor anyone, without a true teacher·मया श्रुता पुरा सत्यं (mayā śrutā purā satyaṃ) — this I have heard before, trulythis I have heard before, truly·श्रुतिरेषा सनातनी (śrutireṣā sanātanī) — this is the eternal scriptural teachingthis is the eternal scriptural teaching

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्याः (iti śrutvā vacastasyāḥ) — hearing this word of hershearing this word of hers·पार्वत्या मुनिसत्तमः (pārvatyā munisattamaḥ) — Pārvatī's, O best of sagesPārvatī's, O best of sages·पंचाक्षरं शम्भुमन्त्रं (paṃcākṣaraṃ śambhumantraṃ) — the five-syllabled mantra of Śambhuthe five-syllabled mantra of Śambhu·विधिपूर्वमुपादिशः (vidhipūrvamupādiśaḥ) — you duly taught, according to ruleyou duly taught, according to rule

अवोचश्च वचस्तां त्वं (avocaśca vacastāṃ tvaṃ) — and you spoke a word to herand you spoke a word to her·श्रद्धामुत्पादयन्मुने (śraddhāmutpādayanmune) — producing faith, O sageproducing faith, O sage·प्रभावं मन्त्रराजस्य (prabhāvaṃ mantrarājasya) — the power of that king of mantrasthe power of that king of mantras·तस्य सर्वाधिकं मुने (tasya sarvādhikaṃ mune) — surpassing all, O sagesurpassing all, O sage

शृणु देवि मनोरस्य (śṛṇu devi manorasya) — hear, O goddess, of this mantrahear, O goddess, of this mantra·प्रभावं परमाद्भुतम् (prabhāvaṃ paramādbhutam) — the supremely wondrous powerthe supremely wondrous power·यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण (yasya śravaṇamātreṇa) — by the mere hearing of whichby the mere hearing of which·शंकरः सुप्रसीदति (śaṃkaraḥ suprasīdati) — Śaṅkara becomes well pleasedŚaṅkara becomes well pleased

मंत्रोऽयं सर्वमंत्राणाम् (maṃtro'yaṃ sarvamaṃtrāṇām) — this mantra, of all mantrasthis mantra, of all mantras·अधिराजश्च कामदः (adhirājaśca kāmadaḥ) — is the sovereign king, and grants desiresis the sovereign king, and grants desires·भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदोऽत्यन्तं (bhuktimuktiprado'tyantaṃ) — utterly bestowing enjoyment and liberationutterly bestowing enjoyment and liberation·शंकरस्य महाप्रियः (śaṃkarasya mahāpriyaḥ) — and greatly dear to Śaṅkaraand greatly dear to Śaṅkara

सुभगे येन जप्तेन (subhage yena japtena) — O fortunate one, by whose repetitionO fortunate one, by whose repetition·विधिना सोऽचिराद् द्रुतम् (vidhinā so'cirād drutam) — in due manner, before long, swiftlyin due manner, before long, swiftly·आराधितस्ते प्रत्यक्षो (ārādhitaste pratyakṣo) — worshipped by you, visible before your eyesworshipped by you, visible before your eyes·भविष्यति शिवो ध्रुवम् (bhaviṣyati śivo dhruvam) — Śiva will certainly appearŚiva will certainly appear

चिन्तयन्ती च तद्रूपं (cintayantī ca tadrūpaṃ) — and meditating on that formand meditating on that form·नियमस्था शराक्षरम् (niyamasthā śarākṣaram) — established in discipline, the five-syllabled [mantra]established in discipline, the five-syllabled [mantra]·जप मन्त्रं शिवे त्वं हि (japa mantraṃ śive tvaṃ hi) — repeat the mantra, O Śivārepeat the mantra, O Śivā·संतुष्यति शिवो द्रुतम् (saṃtuṣyati śivo drutam) — Śiva will quickly become satisfiedŚiva will quickly become satisfied

एवं कुरु तपः साध्वि (evaṃ kuru tapaḥ sādhvi) — thus perform austerity, O virtuous onethus perform austerity, O virtuous one·तपःसाध्यो महेश्वरः (tapaḥsādhyo maheśvaraḥ) — Maheśvara is attainable through austerityMaheśvara is attainable through austerity·तपस्येव फलं सर्वैः (tapasyeva phalaṃ sarvaiḥ) — by austerity alone is fruit attained by allby austerity alone is fruit attained by all·प्राप्यते नान्यथा क्वचित् (prāpyate nānyathā kvacit) — never by any other meansnever by any other means

एवमुक्त्वा तदा कालीं (evamuktvā tadā kālīṃ) — having thus spoken to Kālīhaving thus spoken to Kālī·नारद त्वं शिवप्रियः (nārada tvaṃ śivapriyaḥ) — O Nārada, you, dear to ŚivaO Nārada, you, dear to Śiva·यादृच्छिकोऽगमस्त्वं तु (yādṛcchiko'gamastvaṃ tu) — went of your own free willwent of your own free will·स्वर्गं देवहिते रतः (svargaṃ devahite rataḥ) — to heaven, intent on the good of the godsto heaven, intent on the good of the gods
