ततः सख्यौ समादाय (tataḥ sakhyau samādāya) — then, taking her two companionsthen, taking her two companions·जयां च विजयां तथा (jayāṃ ca vijayāṃ tathā) — Jayā and VijayāJayā and Vijayā·मातरं पितरं चैव (mātaraṃ pitaraṃ caiva) — her mother and fatherher mother and father·सखीभ्यां पर्यपृच्छत (sakhībhyāṃ paryapṛcchata) — she asked, through her two friendsshe asked, through her two friends

प्रथमं पितरं गत्वा (prathamaṃ pitaraṃ gatvā) — first going to her fatherfirst going to her father·हिमवन्तं नगेश्वरम् (himavantaṃ nageśvaram) — Himavat, the lord of mountainsHimavat, the lord of mountains·पर्यपृच्छत्सुप्रणम्य (paryapṛcchatsupraṇamya) — she had him asked, after bowing lowshe had him asked, after bowing low·विनयेन समन्विता (vinayena samanvitā) — endowed with humilityendowed with humility

हिमवन् श्रूयतां (himavan śrūyatāṃ) — O Himavat, let it be heardO Himavat, let it be heard·पुत्रीवचनं कथ्यतेऽधुना (putrīvacanaṃ kathyate'dhunā) — your daughter's word, now spokenyour daughter's word, now spoken·सा स्वयं चैव देहस्य (sā svayaṃ caiva dehasya) — she herself, of her own bodyshe herself, of her own body·रूपस्यापि तथा पुनः (rūpasyāpi tathā punaḥ) — and likewise of her beauty tooand likewise of her beauty too

भवतो हि कुलस्यास्य (bhavato hi kulasyāsya) — of this family of yours indeedof this family of yours indeed·साफल्यं कर्तुमिच्छति (sāphalyaṃ kartumicchati) — she wishes to bring about fruitionshe wishes to bring about fruition·तपसा साधनीयोऽसौ (tapasā sādhanīyo'sau) — he is to be attained by austerityhe is to be attained by austerity·नान्यथा दृश्यतां व्रजेत् (nānyathā dṛśyatāṃ vrajet) — not otherwise may he come within her sightnot otherwise may he come within her sight

तस्माच्च पर्वतश्रेष्ठ (tasmācca parvataśreṣṭha) — therefore, O best of mountainstherefore, O best of mountains·देयाज्ञा भवताधुना (deyājñā bhavatādhunā) — permission should be given by you nowpermission should be given by you now·तपः करोतु गिरिजा (tapaḥ karotu girijā) — let Girijā perform austeritylet Girijā perform austerity·वनं गत्वेति सादरम् (vanaṃ gatveti sādaram) — having gone to the forest — thus, respectfullyhaving gone to the forest — thus, respectfully

मह्यं च रोचतेऽत्यर्थं (mahyaṃ ca rocate'tyarthaṃ) — to me indeed this is exceedingly pleasingto me indeed this is exceedingly pleasing·मेनायै रुच्यतां पुनः (menāyai rucyatāṃ punaḥ) — let it also please Menālet it also please Menā·यथेदं भवितव्यं च (yathedaṃ bhavitavyaṃ ca) — as this is destined to beas this is destined to be·किमतः परमुत्तमम् (kimataḥ paramuttamam) — what better than this could there bewhat better than this could there be

साफल्यं तु मदीयस्य (sāphalyaṃ tu madīyasya) — the fruition of my ownthe fruition of my own·कुलस्य च न संशयः (kulasya ca na saṃśayaḥ) — family — there is no doubt of itfamily — there is no doubt of it·मात्रे तु रुच्यते चेद्धै (mātre tu rucyate ceddhai) — but if it pleases her motherbut if it pleases her mother·ततः शुभतरं नु किम् (tataḥ śubhataraṃ nu kim) — then what indeed could be more auspiciousthen what indeed could be more auspicious

इत्येवं वचनं पित्रा (ityevaṃ vacanaṃ pitrā) — this word thus spoken by the fatherthis word thus spoken by the father·प्रोक्तं श्रुत्वा तु ते तदा (proktaṃ śrutvā tu te tadā) — having heard it, they thenhaving heard it, they then·जग्मतुर्मातरं सख्यौ (jagmaturmātaraṃ sakhyau) — the two friends went to the motherthe two friends went to the mother·तदाज्ञसे तया सह (tadājñase tayā saha) — for that permission, together with herfor that permission, together with her

मातस्त्वं वचनं पुत्र्याः (mātastvaṃ vacanaṃ putryāḥ) — O mother, your daughter's wordO mother, your daughter's word·शृणु देवि नमोऽस्तु ते (śṛṇu devi namo'stu te) — hear, O goddess; salutation to youhear, O goddess; salutation to you·सुप्रसन्नतया तद्धै (suprasannatayā taddhai) — with a glad mind, indeedwith a glad mind, indeed·श्रुत्वा कर्तुमिहार्हसि (śrutvā kartumihārhasi) — having heard it, you ought to act upon it herehaving heard it, you ought to act upon it here

तप्तुकामा तु ते पुत्री (taptukāmā tu te putrī) — your daughter, desiring to practiseyour daughter, desiring to practise·शिवार्थं परमं तपः (śivārthaṃ paramaṃ tapaḥ) — supreme austerity for Śiva's sakesupreme austerity for Śiva's sake·प्राप्तानुज्ञा पितुश्चैव (prāptānujñā pituścaiva) — having obtained her father's permissionhaving obtained her father's permission·तुभ्यं च परिपृच्छति (tubhyaṃ ca paripṛcchati) — now asks you as wellnow asks you as well

इयं स्वरूपसाफल्यं (iyaṃ svarūpasāphalyaṃ) — this one, the fruition of her own formthis one, the fruition of her own form·कर्तुकामा पतिव्रते (kartukāmā pativrate) — desires to bring about, O devoted wifedesires to bring about, O devoted wife·त्वदाज्ञा यदि जायेत (tvadājñā yadi jāyeta) — if your permission should come aboutif your permission should come about·तप्यते च तथा तपः (tapyate ca tathā tapaḥ) — then she will perform that austeritythen she will perform that austerity

इत्युक्त्वा च ततः सख्यौ (ityuktvā ca tataḥ sakhyau) — having said this, the two friends thenhaving said this, the two friends then·तूष्णीमास्तां मुनीश्वर (tūṣṇīmāstāṃ munīśvara) — fell silent, O lord of sagesfell silent, O lord of sages·नाङ्गीचकार मेना सा (nāṅgīcakāra menā sā) — Menā did not acceptMenā did not accept·तद्वाक्यं खिन्नमानसा (tadvākyaṃ khinnamānasā) — that speech, her mind distressedthat speech, her mind distressed

ततः सा पार्वती प्राह (tataḥ sā pārvatī prāha) — then Pārvatī herself spokethen Pārvatī herself spoke·स्वयमेवाथ मातरम् (svayamevātha mātaram) — to her mother directlyto her mother directly·करौ बद्ध्वा विनीतात्मा (karau baddhvā vinītātmā) — folding her hands, humble of spiritfolding her hands, humble of spirit·स्मृत्वा शिवपदांबुजम् (smṛtvā śivapadāṃbujam) — remembering Śiva's lotus feetremembering Śiva's lotus feet

मातस्तपं गमिष्यामि (mātastapaṃ gamiṣyāmi) — O mother, I shall go to austerityO mother, I shall go to austerity·प्रातः प्राप्तुं महेश्वरम् (prātaḥ prāptuṃ maheśvaram) — at dawn, to attain Maheśvaraat dawn, to attain Maheśvara·अजुजानीहि मां गन्तुं (ajujānīhi māṃ gantuṃ) — permit me to gopermit me to go·तपसेऽद्य तपोवनम् (tapase'dya tapovanam) — today, to the tapas-forest, for austeritytoday, to the tapas-forest, for austerity

इत्याकर्ण्य वचः पुत्र्या (ityākarṇya vacaḥ putryā) — hearing this word of her daughterhearing this word of her daughter·मेना दुःखमुपागता (menā duḥkhamupāgatā) — Menā became sorrowfulMenā became sorrowful·सोपाहूय तदा (sopāhūya tadā) — then, calling her to herthen, calling her to her·पुत्रीमुवाच विकला सती (putrīmuvāca vikalā satī) — she spoke to her daughter, being distraughtshe spoke to her daughter, being distraught

दुःखितासि शिवे पुत्रि (duḥkhitāsi śive putri) — you are sorrowful, O Śivā, my daughteryou are sorrowful, O Śivā, my daughter·तपस्तप्तुं पुरा यदि (tapastaptuṃ purā yadi) — if [it is because you wish] to perform austerity, as beforeif [it is because you wish] to perform austerity, as before·तपश्चर गृहेऽद्य त्वं (tapaścara gṛhe'dya tvaṃ) — then practise austerity today in the housethen practise austerity today in the house·न बहिर्गच्छ पार्वति (na bahirgaccha pārvati) — do not go outside, O Pārvatīdo not go outside, O Pārvatī

कुत्र यासि तपः कर्तुं (kutra yāsi tapaḥ kartuṃ) — where would you go to perform austeritywhere would you go to perform austerity·देवाः सन्ति गृहे मम (devāḥ santi gṛhe mama) — the gods are present in my housethe gods are present in my house·तीर्थानि च समस्तानि (tīrthāni ca samastāni) — and all the sacred fordsand all the sacred fords·क्षेत्राणि विविधानि च (kṣetrāṇi vividhāni ca) — and the various holy fields tooand the various holy fields too

कर्तव्यो न हठः पुत्रि (kartavyo na haṭhaḥ putri) — stubbornness should not be shown, my daughterstubbornness should not be shown, my daughter·गंतव्यं न बहिः क्वचित् (gaṃtavyaṃ na bahiḥ kvacit) — you must not go outside anywhereyou must not go outside anywhere·साधितं किं त्वया पूर्वं (sādhitaṃ kiṃ tvayā pūrvaṃ) — what have you already accomplished beforewhat have you already accomplished before·पुनः किं साधयिष्यसि (punaḥ kiṃ sādhayiṣyasi) — what will you accomplish againwhat will you accomplish again

शरीरं कोमलं वत्से (śarīraṃ komalaṃ vatse) — your body is delicate, dear childyour body is delicate, dear child·तपस्तु कठिनं महत् (tapastu kaṭhinaṃ mahat) — but austerity is exceedingly hardbut austerity is exceedingly hard·एतस्मात्तु त्वया कार्यं (etasmāttu tvayā kāryaṃ) — therefore it should be performed by youtherefore it should be performed by you·तपोऽत्र न बहिर्व्रज (tapo'tra na bahirvraja) — your austerity here — do not go outsideyour austerity here — do not go outside

स्त्रीणां तपोवनगतिः (strīṇāṃ tapovanagatiḥ) — the going of women to a tapas-forestthe going of women to a tapas-forest·न श्रुता कामनार्थिनी (na śrutā kāmanārthinī) — desiring a wish, is not heard ofdesiring a wish, is not heard of·तस्मात्त्वं पुत्रि मा कार्षीः (tasmāttvaṃ putri mā kārṣīḥ) — therefore, my daughter, do not undertaketherefore, my daughter, do not undertake·तपोऽर्थं गमनं प्रति (tapo'rthaṃ gamanaṃ prati) — the going for the sake of austeritythe going for the sake of austerity

इत्येवं बहुधा पुत्री (ityevaṃ bahudhā putrī) — thus, in many ways, the daughterthus, in many ways, the daughter·तन्मात्रा विनिवारिता (tanmātrā vinivāritā) — was restrained by her motherwas restrained by her mother·संवदे न सुखं किंचित् (saṃvade na sukhaṃ kiṃcit) — in speaking, she found not the least happinessin speaking, she found not the least happiness·विनाराध्य महेश्वरम् (vinārādhya maheśvaram) — without worshipping Maheśvarawithout worshipping Maheśvara

तपोनिषिद्धा तपसे (taponiṣiddhā tapase) — forbidden, for the sake of austerityforbidden, for the sake of austerity·वनं गन्तुं च मेनया (vanaṃ gantuṃ ca menayā) — to go to the forest, by Menāto go to the forest, by Menā·हेतुना तेन सोमेति नाम (hetunā tena someti nāma) — for that reason, the name 'Umā'for that reason, the name 'Umā'·प्राप शिवा तदा (prāpa śivā tadā) — Śivā then obtainedŚivā then obtained

हित्वा हारं तथा चर्म (hitvā hāraṃ tathā carma) — giving up her necklace, and [donning] the hidegiving up her necklace, and [donning] the hide·मृगस्य परमं धृतम् (mṛgasya paramaṃ dhṛtam) — of a deer, excellently wornof a deer, excellently worn·जगाम तपसे तत्र (jagāma tapase tatra) — she went there, for austerityshe went there, for austerity·गङ्गावतरणं प्रति (gaṅgāvataraṇaṃ prati) — toward Gaṅgāvataraṇatoward Gaṅgāvataraṇa

यत्र स्थित्वा पुरा शंभुः (yatra sthitvā purā śaṃbhuḥ) — where, staying formerly, Śambhuwhere, staying formerly, Śambhu·तप्तवान्दुस्तरं तपः (taptavāndustaraṃ tapaḥ) — had performed austerity hard to crosshad performed austerity hard to cross·तत्र क्षणं तु सा स्थित्वा (tatra kṣaṇaṃ tu sā sthitvā) — there, having stayed a momentthere, having stayed a moment·बभूव विरहार्दिता (babhūva virahārditā) — she became afflicted by separationshe became afflicted by separation

सुंदराश्च द्रुमास्तत्र (suṃdarāśca drumāstatra) — and beautiful trees thereand beautiful trees there·पवित्राशिशवया मुने (pavitrāśiśavayā mune) — sacred and young, O sagesacred and young, O sage·आरोपिताः परीक्षार्थं (āropitāḥ parīkṣārthaṃ) — were planted, for the sake of a testwere planted, for the sake of a test·तपसः फलभागिनः (tapasaḥ phalabhāginaḥ) — sharers in the fruit of her austeritysharers in the fruit of her austerity
