Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra, son of Brahmā, to relate what happened to the gods after their earlier distress, and how they came to happiness. Sanatkumāra recounts that the gods, scorched and oppressed by the might of Maya, lord of the triple city Tripura, allied with the sons of Tāraka, took counsel together and went in sorrow to Brahmā, telling him of their affliction and begging him to devise a means of destroying their tormentor. Brahmā, smiling, reassures them that they need not fear the demons, but explains that he himself cannot sanction the demon's death, since it was his own boon that made the demon mighty and merit still continues to grow in the city of Tripura; instead he directs the gods to pray to Śiva, the lord of all, who alone can accomplish their deliverance if he is pleased. Hearing this, the gods go in distress to where the bull-bannered Śiva resides and, bowing with great devotion, heads bowed and hands folded, offer him an extended hymn of praise. In this hymn they first salute Śiva under his manifold cosmic and personal forms — as Hiraṇyagarbha and the sustaining Viṣṇu-form, as Hara the destroyer of beings, as the qualityless yet all-pervading great soul, as lord of beings bearing the world's burden, as the wildfire that consumes the demon-forest, as the husband of Ambikā and Pārvatī, as blue-throated Rudra, as known through Vedānta yet beyond every path, and in the successive forms of Vāsudeva, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Saṅkarṣaṇa, and Nārāyaṇa, among many other names — before turning, in the manner of a vibhūti-hymn reminiscent of the Bhagavadgītā, to declare Śiva the best and essence of every class of thing in creation: among gods Indra, among planets the sun, among worlds Satyaloka, among rivers the celestial Gaṅgā, among mountains the Himālaya, among cows Kāmadhenu, among varṇas the brāhmaṇa, among men the king, among sacred fields Kāśī, among stones crystal and the Śālagrāma, among beasts Nandin the bull, among the Vedas the Upaniṣads, among Purāṇas the Bhārata, among syllables the letter 'ma', among seed-mantras the Praṇava, among the senses the mind, among gifts fearlessness, among sacrifices the Aśvamedha and the sacrifice of recitation, among the ages the first, among the seasons spring, among trees the banyan, among the stages of life renunciation, among human aims liberation, and among the Rudras Nīlalohita, among dozens of further such comparisons — concluding that, supporting the entire universe with but a single fragment of himself, Śiva remains at once beyond it and intimately present within it. Having thus praised Mahādeva with many divine hymns, the gods, led by Indra, humbled despite their usual skill in securing their own ends, turn to the matter that brought them there: they tell Śiva that they, together with Indra, have been utterly defeated by the three sons of Tāraka and their allies; that the triple world has been brought under the demons' sway, the siddhas and sages destroyed, the sacrificial shares seized by the demons themselves, unrighteousness spread abroad, and the sages hindered from their rites; that the sons of Tāraka, being presently unslayable by any being, act entirely according to their own will; and they beg Śiva to devise some policy by which the world may be protected before it is utterly ruined by the terrible demons dwelling in Tripura. Having heard this speech of Indra and the assembled gods, Śiva then begins his reply.
