In response to the gods' hymn of praise, Śiva speaks: the lord of Tripura is presently protected by merit (puṇya), and one who abides in dharma may never be slain by the wise, however great the gods' distress and however powerful and unassailable the demons may be. The Tripura demons, sons of Tāraka, are bound by their vows and are his own devotees; knowing that betrayal of a friend is a grave sin from which even the pious find no expiation for ingratitude, Śiva declares he cannot countenance their destruction, and that so long as they remain devoted to him they must not be slain — yet he directs the gods to lay the matter before Viṣṇu. The gods report to Brahmā, and all proceed to Vaikuṇṭha, where they lay their sorrow before Hari. Viṣṇu observes that where eternal dharma abides, sorrow cannot arise, as darkness cannot remain when the sun is seen; the anguished gods press him further, asking how their own dharma can prosper while Tripura lives, and begging that either Tripura be slain or the gods themselves be allowed to perish. Seeing their abject state, Viṣṇu falls into thought, recalls the sacrifices (yajñas) to his aid, and from the sacrificial fire thousands of mighty, weapon-bearing bhūta-hosts spring forth. Viṣṇu, upholding Rudra's command, sends them to burn, pierce, and shatter the triple city and then return; but on entering the fiery radiance of Tripura's lord they are instantly reduced to ashes like moths in a flame, and the few survivors flee back to Hari in terror. Pondering how the demons' city can be destroyed by force, Viṣṇu recalls Śiva's own teaching that hostile magic cannot destroy the righteous, and reasons that the Tripura demons owe their inviolability precisely to their righteousness: their worship of Rudra (the liṅga) frees them from every sin and grants them both worldly prosperity and, in time, liberation. He therefore resolves that so long as Vedic dharma, the worship of Śaṅkara, and pure observances continue among them, no destruction is possible; the demons' Vedic dharma must first be made to depart, so that having abandoned liṅga-worship they will no longer be secure. Determining this, and acting under Śiva's own command for the protection of the three worlds, Viṣṇu devises the stratagem of undermining their fidelity to the Veda, sends the reassured gods home with the promise that he will accomplish the gods' task in his own way and by his own effort turn the demons away from Rudra, and thereafter sets about bringing this supreme benefit to pass — the account of which, destroying all sin, is now to be heard.
ayaṃ vai tripurādhyakṣaḥ puṇyavānvartate'dhunā | yatra puṇyaṃ pravarteta na hantavyo budhaiḥ kvacit 1 ||
"This lord of Tripura is now possessed of merit; wherever merit prevails, that one should never be slain by the wise."
अयं वै त्रिपुराध्यक्षः (ayaṃ vai tripurādhyakṣaḥ) — "this lord of Tripuraपुण्यवान्वर्ततेऽधुना (puṇyavānvartate'dhunā) — is now possessed of merit;यत्र पुण्यं प्रवर्तेत (yatra puṇyaṃ pravarteta) — wherever merit prevails,न हन्तव्यो बुधैः क्वचित् (na hantavyo budhaiḥ kvacit) — he should never be slain by the wise"
jānāmi devakaṣṭaṃ ca vibudhāḥ sakalaṃ mahat | daityāste prabalā hantumaśakyāstu surāsuraiḥ 2 ||
"I know, O gods, your whole great distress; but those demons are powerful, impossible to slay even by gods and demons together."
जानामि देवकष्टं च (jānāmi devakaṣṭaṃ ca) — "I know, O gods,विबुधाः सकलं महत् (vibudhāḥ sakalaṃ mahat) — your whole great distress;दैत्यास्ते प्रबला (daityāste prabalā) — those demons are powerful,हन्तुमशक्यास्तु सुरासुरैः (hantumaśakyāstu surāsuraiḥ) — impossible to slay by gods and demons alike"
puṇyavantastu te sarve samayāstārakātmajāḥ | dussādhyastu vadhasteṣāṃ sarveṣāṃ puravāsinām 3 ||
Meritorious, all of them, are those sons of Tāraka, bound by their vows; therefore the slaying of all those dwellers of the city is very hard to accomplish.
पुण्यवन्तस्तु ते सर्वे (puṇyavantastu te sarve) — meritorious, all of them, areसमयास्तारकात्मजाः (samayāstārakātmajāḥ) — those sons of Tāraka, bound by their vows;दुस्साध्यस्तु वधस्तेषां (dussādhyastu vadhasteṣāṃ) — therefore very hard to accomplish is the slaying of them,सर्वेषां पुरवासिनाम् (sarveṣāṃ puravāsinām) — of all those dwellers of the city
mitradrohaṃ kathaṃ jānankaromi raṇakarkaśaḥ | suhṛddrohe mahatpāpaṃ pūrvamuktaṃ svayambhuvā 4 ||
"How, though fierce in battle, could I knowingly commit betrayal of a friend? Great sin lies in betraying a well-wisher — this was declared of old by the Self-born [Brahmā]."
मित्रद्रोहं कथं जानन् (mitradrohaṃ kathaṃ jānan) — "how, knowingly, could I commitकरोमि रणकर्कशः (karomi raṇakarkaśaḥ) — betrayal of a friend, though fierce in battle?सुहृद्द्रोहे महत्पापं (suhṛddrohe mahatpāpaṃ) — in the betrayal of a well-wisher, great sin lies —पूर्वमुक्तं स्वयम्भुवा (pūrvamuktaṃ svayambhuvā) — this was declared of old by the Self-born [Brahmā]"

brahmaghne ca surāpe ca steye bhagnavrate tathā | niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ 5 ||
"For the slayer of a brāhmaṇa, for the drinker of liquor, for theft, and likewise for the breaker of a vow, expiation has been prescribed by the good; but for the ungrateful there is no expiation."
ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च (brahmaghne ca surāpe ca) — "for the slayer of a brāhmaṇa, and for the drinker of liquor,स्तेये भग्नव्रते तथा (steye bhagnavrate tathā) — for theft, and likewise for the breaker of a vow,निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भिः (niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ) — expiation has been prescribed by the good;कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः (kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ) — but for the ungrateful there is no expiation"
mama bhaktāstu te daityā mayā vadhyāḥ kathaṃ surāḥ | vicāryatāṃ bhavadbhiśca dharmajñaireva dharmataḥ 6 ||
"Those demons are my devotees; how, O gods, could they be slain by me? Let this be considered by you, who know dharma, strictly according to dharma."
मम भक्तास्तु ते दैत्या (mama bhaktāstu te daityā) — "my devotees indeed are those demons;मया वध्याः कथं सुराः (mayā vadhyāḥ kathaṃ surāḥ) — how, O gods, could they be slain by me?विचार्यतां भवद्भिश्च (vicāryatāṃ bhavadbhiśca) — let it be considered by you,धर्मज्ञैरेव धर्मतः (dharmajñaireva dharmataḥ) — who know dharma, strictly according to dharma"
tāvatte naiva hantavyā yāvadbhaktikṛtaśca me | tathāpi viṣṇave devā nivedyaṃ kāraṇaṃ tvidam 7 ||
"So long as they remain devoted to me, they should never be slain. Even so, O gods, this matter should be reported to Viṣṇu."
तावत्ते नैव हन्तव्या (tāvatte naiva hantavyā) — "so long they should not at all be slainयावद्भक्तिकृतश्च मे (yāvadbhaktikṛtaśca me) — as they remain devoted to me;तथापि विष्णवे देवा (tathāpi viṣṇave devā) — even so, O gods, to Viṣṇuनिवेद्यं कारणं त्विदम् (nivedyaṃ kāraṇaṃ tvidam) — this matter should be reported"
ityevaṃ tadvacaḥ śrutvā devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ | nyavedayan drutaṃ sarve brahmaṇe prathamaṃ mune 8 ||
Having heard these words, O sage, the gods, headed by Indra, all swiftly reported the matter, first of all, to Brahmā.
इत्येवं तद्वचः श्रुत्वा (ityevaṃ tadvacaḥ śrutvā) — having heard these words thus,देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः (devāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ) — the gods, headed by Indra,न्यवेदयन् द्रुतं सर्वे (nyavedayan drutaṃ sarve) — all swiftly reported it,ब्रह्मणे प्रथमं मुने (brahmaṇe prathamaṃ mune) — O sage, first of all to Brahmā
tato vidhiṃ puraskṛtya sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ | vaikuṇṭhaṃ prayayuḥ śīghraṃ sarve śobhāsamanvitam 9 ||
Then, placing Brahmā at their head, all the gods, together with Indra, quickly went to Vaikuṇṭha, replete with splendour.
ततो विधिं पुरस्कृत्य (tato vidhiṃ puraskṛtya) — then, placing Brahmā (Vidhi) at their head,सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः (sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ) — all the gods, together with Indra,वैकुण्ठं प्रययुः शीघ्रं (vaikuṇṭhaṃ prayayuḥ śīghraṃ) — quickly went to Vaikuṇṭha,सर्वे शोभासमन्वितम् (sarve śobhāsamanvitam) — the abode replete with splendour
tatra gatvā hariṃ dṛṣṭvā praṇemurjātasambhramāḥ | tuṣṭuvuśca mahābhaktyā kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ surāḥ 10 ||
Having gone there and seen Hari, the gods, filled with reverent haste, bowed down, and, with folded hands, praised him with great devotion.
तत्र गत्वा हरिं दृष्ट्वा (tatra gatvā hariṃ dṛṣṭvā) — having gone there and seen Hari,प्रणेमुर्जातसम्भ्रमाः (praṇemurjātasambhramāḥ) — they bowed down, filled with reverent haste,तुष्टुवुश्च महाभक्त्या (tuṣṭuvuśca mahābhaktyā) — and praised him with great devotion,कृताञ्जलिपुटाः सुराः (kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ surāḥ) — the gods, with folded hands
svaduḥkhakāraṇaṃ sarvaṃ pūrvavattadanantaram | nyavedayandrutaṃ tasmai viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave 11 ||
Thereafter they swiftly reported to that mighty Viṣṇu the whole cause of their sorrow, just as before.
स्वदुःखकारणं सर्वं (svaduḥkhakāraṇaṃ sarvaṃ) — the whole cause of their sorrow,पूर्ववत्तदनन्तरम् (pūrvavattadanantaram) — just as before, thereafterन्यवेदयन्द्रुतं तस्मै (nyavedayandrutaṃ tasmai) — they swiftly reported to thatविष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे (viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave) — mighty Viṣṇu
devaduḥkhaṃ tataḥ śrutvā dattaṃ ca tripurālayaiḥ | jñātvā vrataṃ ca teṣāṃ tadviṣṇurvacanamabravīt 12 ||
Having then heard of the gods' sorrow, and of what had been granted by the dwellers of Tripura, and having learned of their vow, Viṣṇu spoke this word.
Noteदत्तं च त्रिपुरालयैः — literally "and what was given/granted by the dwellers of Tripura," most likely a compressed reference back to the boon(s) the Tripura demons had earlier received (recounted in preceding chapters), rather than naming any new gift; rendered literally here without supplying an unattested specific referent.
देवदुःखं ततः श्रुत्वा (devaduḥkhaṃ tataḥ śrutvā) — having then heard of the gods' sorrow,दत्तं च त्रिपुरालयैः (dattaṃ ca tripurālayaiḥ) — and what had been granted by the dwellers of Tripura,ज्ञात्वा व्रतं च तेषां (jñātvā vrataṃ ca teṣāṃ) — and having known their vow,तद्विष्णुर्वचनमब्रवीत् (tadviṣṇurvacanamabravīt) — that Viṣṇu then spoke this word
idaṃ satyaṃ vacaścaiva yatra dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ | tatra duḥkhaṃ na jāyeta sūrye dṛṣṭe yathā tamaḥ 13 ||
"This is indeed a true saying: where eternal dharma abides, sorrow cannot arise there — just as darkness cannot remain when the sun is seen."
इदं सत्यं वचश्चैव (idaṃ satyaṃ vacaścaiva) — "this is indeed a true saying:यत्र धर्मः सनातनः (yatra dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ) — wherever eternal dharma is,तत्र दुःखं न जायेत (tatra duḥkhaṃ na jāyeta) — there sorrow cannot arise,सूर्ये दृष्टे यथा तमः (sūrye dṛṣṭe yathā tamaḥ) — as darkness [cannot remain] when the sun is seen"
ityetadvacanaṃ śrutvā devā duḥkhamupāgatāḥ | punarūcustathā viṣṇuṃ parimlānamukhāmbujāḥ 14 ||
Having heard this speech, the gods, overcome with sorrow, their lotus-faces withered, again spoke thus to Viṣṇu.
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा (ityetadvacanaṃ śrutvā) — having heard this speech,देवा दुःखमुपागताः (devā duḥkhamupāgatāḥ) — the gods, overcome with sorrow,पुनरूचुस्तथा विष्णुं (punarūcustathā viṣṇuṃ) — again spoke thus to Viṣṇu,परिम्लानमुखाम्बुजाः (parimlānamukhāmbujāḥ) — their lotus-faces withered
kathaṃ caiva prakarttavyaṃ kathaṃ duḥkhaṃ nirasyate | kathaṃ bhavema sukhinaḥ kathaṃ sthāsyāmahe vayam 15 ||
[The gods said:] "What indeed is to be done? How is our sorrow to be dispelled? How may we become happy? How shall we endure?"
कथं चैव प्रकर्त्तव्यं (kathaṃ caiva prakarttavyaṃ) — "what indeed is to be done,कथं दुःखं निरस्यते (kathaṃ duḥkhaṃ nirasyate) — how is [our] sorrow to be dispelled?कथं भवेम सुखिनः (kathaṃ bhavema sukhinaḥ) — how may we become happy?कथं स्थास्यामहे वयम् (kathaṃ sthāsyāmahe vayam) — how shall we endure?"
kathaṃ dharmā bhaviṣyanti tripure jīvite sati | devaduḥkhapradā nūnaṃ sarve tripuravāsinaḥ 16 ||
"How can our sacred rites prosper so long as Tripura lives? Surely all the dwellers of Tripura are the cause of the gods' sorrow."
कथं धर्मा भविष्यन्ति (kathaṃ dharmā bhaviṣyanti) — "how can [our] sacred rites prosper,त्रिपुरे जीविते सति (tripure jīvite sati) — so long as Tripura lives?देवदुःखप्रदा नूनं (devaduḥkhapradā nūnaṃ) — surely the cause of the gods' sorrowसर्वे त्रिपुरवासिनः (sarve tripuravāsinaḥ) — are all the dwellers of Tripura"
kiṃ vā te tripurasyeha vadhaścaiva vidhīyatām | no cedakālikī devasaṃhatiḥ kriyatāṃ dhruvam 17 ||
"Either, then, let the slaying of Tripura here be ordained; or else, let the untimely destruction of the gods surely be brought about."
किं वा ते त्रिपुरस्येह (kiṃ vā te tripurasyeha) — "either, here, let the slayingवधश्चैव विधीयताम् (vadhaścaiva vidhīyatām) — of Tripura be ordained by you,नो चेदकालिकी (no cedakālikī) — or else, let an untimelyदेवसंहतिः क्रियतां ध्रुवम् (devasaṃhatiḥ kriyatāṃ dhruvam) — destruction of the gods surely be brought about"
ityuktvā te tadā devā duḥkhaṃ kṛtvā punaḥ punaḥ | sthitiṃ naiva gatiṃ te vai cakrurdevavarādiha 18 ||
Having spoken thus, the gods then, lamenting again and again, neither stayed nor departed from before the best of gods [Viṣṇu].
इत्युक्त्वा ते तदा देवा (ityuktvā te tadā devā) — having spoken thus, those gods then,दुःखं कृत्वा पुनः पुनः (duḥkhaṃ kṛtvā punaḥ punaḥ) — lamenting again and again,स्थितिं नैव गतिं ते वै (sthitiṃ naiva gatiṃ te vai) — neither stayed nor departed —चक्रुर्देववरादिह (cakrurdevavarādiha) — they, here, from the best of gods [Viṣṇu]

Seeing them thus, so afflicted yet full of humility, the glorious Nārāyaṇa too began to reflect within his mind.
तान्वै तथाविधान्दृष्ट्वा (tānvai tathāvidhāndṛṣṭvā) — seeing them in that plight,हीनान्विनयसंयुतान् (hīnānvinayasaṃyutān) — so afflicted, yet full of humility,सोऽपि नारायणः श्रीमान् (so'pi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmān) — that glorious Nārāyaṇa tooश्चिन्तयंश्चेतसा तथा (ścintayaṃścetasā tathā) — began to reflect within his mind
kiṃ kāryaṃ devakāryeṣu mayā devasahāyinā | śivabhaktāstu te daityāstārakasya sutā iti 20 ||
"What am I, the helper of the gods, to do in the gods' affairs — since those demons, the sons of Tāraka, are devotees of Śiva?"
किं कार्यं देवकार्येषु (kiṃ kāryaṃ devakāryeṣu) — "what am I to do in the gods' affairs,मया देवसहायिना (mayā devasahāyinā) — I, the helper of the gods —शिवभक्तास्तु ते दैत्याः (śivabhaktāstu te daityāḥ) — since those demons are devotees of Śiva,तारकस्य सुता इति (tārakasya sutā iti) — the sons of Tāraka"
iti sañcintya tatkāle viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā | tato yajñāḥ smṛtāstena devakāryārthamakṣayāḥ 21 ||
Having thus reflected, the mighty Viṣṇu then, at that moment, called to mind the imperishable sacrifices, for the sake of the gods' work.
इति सञ्चिन्त्य तत्काले (iti sañcintya tatkāle) — having thus reflected, at that time,विष्णुना प्रभविष्णुना (viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā) — by the mighty Viṣṇu,ततो यज्ञाः स्मृतास्तेन (tato yajñāḥ smṛtāstena) — then the sacrifices were called to mind by him,देवकार्यार्थमक्षयाः (devakāryārthamakṣayāḥ) — the imperishable ones, for the gods' work
tadviṣṇusmṛtimātreṇa yajñāste tatkṣaṇaṃ drutam | āgatāstatra yatrāste śrīpatiḥ puruṣottamaḥ 22 ||
By that mere remembrance of Viṣṇu, those sacrifices, at that very instant, swiftly came to where the Lord of Śrī, the Supreme Person, was.

For those demons, all the dwellers of Tripura, are indeed righteous; therefore those foremost of asuras have attained inviolability, and not for any other reason.

Even having committed a very great sin, when they worship Rudra they are freed from all sins, as a lotus leaf [is unwetted] by water.
कृत्वा तु सुमहत्पापं (kṛtvā tu sumahatpāpaṃ) — even having committed a very great sin,रुद्रमभ्यर्चयन्ति ते (rudramabhyarcayanti te) — when they worship Rudra,मुच्यन्ते पातकैः सर्वैः (mucyante pātakaiḥ sarvaiḥ) — they are freed from all sins,पद्मपत्रमिवाम्भसा (padmapatramivāmbhasā) — as a lotus leaf [is unwetted] by water

"By the worship of Rudra, O gods, all desires are indeed fulfilled; manifold enjoyment and prosperity come under one's control on earth."
रुद्राभ्यर्चनतो देवाः (rudrābhyarcanato devāḥ) — "by the worship of Rudra, O gods,सर्वे कामा भवन्ति हि (sarve kāmā bhavanti hi) — all desires are indeed fulfilled;नानोपभोगसम्पत्तिः (nānopabhogasampattiḥ) — manifold enjoyment and prosperityवश्यतां याति वै भुवि (vaśyatāṃ yāti vai bhuvi) — come under one's control on earth"

Therefore those demons, enjoyers of such fruit, devoted to the worship of the liṅga, [partake] of manifold prosperity, and even of liberation in the world beyond.
तस्मात्तद्भोगिनो दैत्या (tasmāttadbhogino daityā) — therefore those demons, enjoyers of that [fruit],लिङ्गार्चनपरायणाः (liṅgārcanaparāyaṇāḥ) — devoted to the worship of the liṅga,अनेकविधसम्पत्तेः (anekavidhasampatteḥ) — [partake] of manifold prosperity,मोक्षस्यापि परत्र च (mokṣasyāpi paratra ca) — and even of liberation in the world beyond

"Therefore, having created, by my own delusive power (māyā), an obstruction to the dharma of those very demons, for the sake of the gods' work I shall destroy Tripura in an instant."
ततः कृत्वा धर्मविघ्नं (tataḥ kṛtvā dharmavighnaṃ) — "therefore, having created an obstruction to the dharmaतेषामेवात्ममायया (teṣāmevātmamāyayā) — of those very [demons], by my own delusive power,दैत्यानां देवकार्यार्थं (daityānāṃ devakāryārthaṃ) — of the demons, for the sake of the gods' work,हरिष्ये त्रिपुरं क्षणात् (hariṣye tripuraṃ kṣaṇāt) — I shall destroy Tripura in an instant"

Having thus deliberated, the Lord, the Supreme Person, thereafter resolved to create an obstruction to the dharma of the gods' enemies.
विचार्येत्थं ततस्तेषां (vicāryetthaṃ tatasteṣāṃ) — having thus deliberated, thereafter, of them,भगवान्पुरुषोत्तमः (bhagavānpuruṣottamaḥ) — the Lord, the Supreme Person,कर्तुं व्यवस्थितः पश्चात् (kartuṃ vyavasthitaḥ paścāt) — resolved thereupon to createधर्मविघ्नं सुरारिणाम् (dharmavighnaṃ surāriṇām) — an obstruction to the dharma of the gods' enemies

"So long as the Vedic dharmas continue, so long as the worship of Śaṅkara continues, and so long as pure observances continue — so long there can be no destruction."
यावच्च वेदधर्मास्तु (yāvacca vedadharmāstu) — "so long as the Vedic dharmas [continue],यावद्वै शङ्करार्चनम् (yāvadvai śaṅkarārcanam) — so long indeed as the worship of Śaṅkara [continues],यावच्च शुचिकृत्यानि (yāvacca śucikṛtyāni) — and so long as pure observances [continue],तावन्नाशो भवेन्न हि (tāvannāśo bhavenna hi) — so long there can be no destruction"

"Therefore this should be done: their Vedic dharma should thereby depart from them; then the demons, having abandoned liṅga-worship, will [become vulnerable] — of this there is no doubt."
तस्मादेवं प्रकर्तव्यं (tasmādevaṃ prakartavyaṃ) — "therefore this should be done, thus:वेदधर्मस्ततो व्रजेत् (vedadharmastato vrajet) — their Vedic dharma should thereby depart [from them];त्यक्तलिङ्गार्चना दैत्या (tyaktaliṅgārcanā daityā) — the demons, having abandoned liṅga-worship,भविष्यन्ति न संशयः (bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ) — will thus become [vulnerable] — of this there is no doubt"

iti niścitya vai viṣṇurvighnārthamakarottadā | teṣāṃ dharmasya daityānāmupāyaṃ śrutikhaṇḍanam 49 ||
Having thus resolved, Viṣṇu then devised, for the sake of obstructing the dharma of those demons, the means of it — the subversion of the Vedic teaching.

Then that Viṣṇu, the helper of the gods, commanded by Śiva himself, by Śiva's own command, for the protection of the three worlds, spoke to the gods.
तदैवोवाच देवान्स (tadaivovāca devānsa) — then that [Viṣṇu] spoke to the gods,विष्णुर्देवसहायकृत् (viṣṇurdevasahāyakṛt) — Viṣṇu, the helper of the gods,शिवाज्ञया शिवेनैव (śivājñayā śivenaiva) — by Śiva's own command, by Śiva himselfआज्ञप्तस्त्रैलोक्यरक्षणे (ājñaptastrailokyarakṣaṇe) — commanded, for the protection of the three worlds

"O gods, all of you, go now, surely, to your own abodes; I shall accomplish the gods' work according to my ability — of this there is no doubt."

"I shall surely, with great effort, turn them away from Rudra; and having known them devoid of devotion to him, I shall reduce them to ashes."

Having received that command upon their heads, and being reassured, O sage, those gods, trusting, went to their own respective abodes, greatly delighted.

And thereafter Viṣṇu accomplished the supreme benefit for the sake of the gods; hear that very account rightly, which destroys all sin.
