Chapter One · The Austerities of Tāraka's Sons and the Fashioning of the Three Cities of Tripura · Verses 1–78

This chapter opens the Yuddha-khāṇḍa, the fifth division of the Rudra-saṃhitā. Nārada, having heard the joyous domestic story of Śiva's household life through the births of Gaṇeśa and Skanda, now asks Brahmā to narrate Śiva's valorous deeds — how Śāṅkara burnt the three cities of the demons with a single arrow. Brahmā replies that he will simply repeat what he once told Sanatkumāra, when Vyāsa had asked him the same question; and the chapter shifts into Sanatkumāra's own narration to Vyāsa. After Tārakāsura was slain by Skanda, his three sons — Tārakākṣa the eldest, Vidyunmālī the middle, and Kamalākṣa the youngest, all equally mighty, self-controlled, and hostile to the gods — grieved bitterly and retired to a cave of Mount Meru, where they performed an extraordinary, sustained tapas through all six seasons: offering oblations amid ritual fires in summer, enduring monsoon downpours bareheaded, giving away food to the hungry while starving themselves in autumn, standing exposed on a mountain in early winter, immersed in icy water in deep winter, and for years on end standing on one foot, feeding on air alone, or balanced on their heads with arms upraised. Pleased by their austerity, Brahmā appeared to grant them a boon. When they asked for unconditional immortality, he explained that no creature but Śiva and Viṣṇu can be truly deathless, and urged them instead to name some condition of death so improbable that it would amount to safety. After reflecting, the three asked not for personal invulnerability but for three wondrous, virtually impregnable cities — of gold, silver, and iron — in which to dwell, proposing that they could only be destroyed if the three cities aligned as one at a fixed astronomical moment once every thousand years, and were struck by a single arrow shot by a god so revered by them that he would never wish them harm. Brahmā granted this and commanded the demon-architect Maya to build the three cities — golden for Tārakākṣa, silver for Kamalākṣa, and iron for Vidyunmālī — in heaven, sky, and earth respectively. Maya built and consecrated the cities and, out of devotion to their welfare, dwelt there himself; the three demon-brothers entered and enjoyed their splendour — filled with wish-fulfilling trees, jewelled mansions, temples of Rudra, chaste women, warriors of every temperament, and every form of worship and delight — and ruled a vast kingdom there for a great span of time, devoted to the path of Śiva.

NoteThe vocative मुने ("O sage") sits oddly inside Brahmā's address to the demons; it is best read as Sanatkumāra's aside to his own listener, Vyāsa, momentarily surfacing within the quoted speech — a common Puranic narrative habit, not a sign that the boon-speech is addressed to a sage.
