Chapter Twenty·Gaṇeśa's Wedding and Kārtikeya's Departure·Verses 1–45
Brahmā continues his account for Nārada: meanwhile Prajāpati Viśvarūpa, learning of Śiva and Pārvatī's resolve, was overjoyed, and his two divine daughters, Siddhi and Buddhi, were married to Gaṇeśa in a great festival, to the delight of the gathered gods, sages, and Viśvakarmā, who himself performed the rite. In time each wife bore Gaṇeśa a son — Kṣema from Siddhi and Lābha from Buddhi — and Gaṇeśa lived on in a happiness beyond telling. While he was enjoying this bliss, his brother, having circumambulated the earth as the wager required, returned home; there the sage Nārada met him and told him plainly that his parents had deceived him — sending him off on an impossible circuit of the earth as a mere pretext, so that Gaṇeśa's marriage could be arranged first — and urged him to weigh for himself whether such a trick, practiced even by one's own parents, was right, citing the maxim that a wise man seeking peace should not even look upon the face of one who has done so ruinous a deed, and leaving the decision to him. Brahmā, addressing Nārada directly, then relates how Skanda, blazing with anger though his parents tried to restrain him, bowed to his father and departed for Mount Krauñca, declaring he would not stay a moment longer where love had been forsaken for deceit; he remains there to this day, purifying by his mere sight all who behold him. From that day the name 'Kumāra' became fixed upon him — an auspicious name, famed through the three worlds, that destroys all sin and bestows celibacy; gods, sages, and pilgrims go for his darśana every Kārtika full moon, above all when it falls under the Kṛttikā nakṣatra, and whoever beholds him then is freed of every sin and gains his heart's desire. Grieving at her son's absence, Pārvatī asked Śiva to go to him, and Śiva himself, through a portion of himself, went to that mountain, where the bliss-bestowing Mallikārjuna Jyotirliṅga came to be established, and where he is still seen there today together with Pārvatī, granting the wishes of his devotees. But perceiving that his parents had come, Kumāra, still estranged, withdrew further still, three yojanas away, even though entreated by gods and sages to return; and so, unable to dwell together, the grieving parents go to see him on every sacred occasion instead — Śiva himself on the day of the new moon, Pārvatī on the day of the full moon. Having thus told Nārada everything he asked concerning Kārtikeya and Gaṇeśa, Brahmā closes with the phalaśruti: that hearing, reading, reciting, or causing this account to be heard frees one from all sin and grants every desire — brāhmaṇas gain sacred lustre, kṣatriyas victory, vaiśyas wealth, śūdras excellence, the sick are freed from disease, the fearful from fear, and none is afflicted by evil spirits; the account, itself sinless and glory-bestowing, grants long life, heaven, progeny, and liberation, delights both Śiva and Śivā, deepens devotion to Śiva, and is fit to be ever heard by devotees, the desireless, and seekers of liberation, bestowing at last non-duality with Śiva himself. With this the twentieth chapter — and with it the entire Kumāra-khaṇḍa — comes to a close.
