Chapter Nineteen · Gaṇeśa Wins the Wager to Marry First · Verses 1–55

Nārada, having heard the wondrous and valorous birth-story of Gaṇeśa, asks Brahmā what happened next in this account so full of the glory of Śivā and Śiva. Brahmā resumes: as the two boys, Ṣaṇmukha (Kārtikeya) and Gaṇeśa, grew up amid their parents' deepening love and themselves served Śiva and Pārvatī with great devotion, the parents one day sat privately deliberating how to arrange the marriage of both sons, since neither was less dear than the other. The boys, learning of their parents' intention, grew eager for marriage and fell into a running dispute, each insisting he would marry first; astonished, Śivā and Śiva devised a worldly test and summoned the two, laying down a rule: whichever son first circles the entire earth and returns will have his marriage performed first. Kārtikeya, the mighty son born of the reed-thicket, at once set out to circle the earth; but the wise Gaṇeśa, reflecting that the feat was impossible and that even were it possible it would gain him nothing, instead bathed, returned home, and asked his parents to be seated on a seat he had prepared for their worship. Having worshipped them, circumambulated them seven times, and bowed to them seven times, he begged with folded hands, overwhelmed with love, that his marriage be arranged at once. When his parents pointed out that he had not actually circled the earth, Gaṇeśa argued that by worshipping and circumambulating his own parents he had, by his own understanding, effectively circled the ocean-girt earth — appealing to the Vedic and Śāstric teaching that a son's true pilgrimage-site is his parents' feet, that abandoning them for a distant tīrtha is as sinful as slaying them, and that if his parents did not honour this teaching by granting his request, the Vedas themselves would be shown false; he asked them to weigh which of the two claims — the wager or the scriptural teaching on filial worship — was truly the higher, and to act on that. Reduced to astonished silence by this display of wisdom, Śivā and Śiva praised their son's flawless intellect, likened his triumph over adversity to the sun dispelling darkness and his cleverness to the hare that once felled a proud lion, declared that he had fulfilled every duty of a child taught in the Vedas, Śāstras, and Purāṇas, and, having accepted his reasoning as final, resolved to arrange his marriage.
