Chapter 34 · The Sighting of Evil Omens · Verses 1–26

As Vīrabhadra marches with his host, a cascade of terrible omens strikes Dakṣa's sacrifice — earthquakes, falling stars, showers of blood and scorpions, vomited flesh, vultures shadowing the hall. A bodiless voice from the sky curses Dakṣa and warns his allies of the great sorrow to come, and the terrified Dakṣa flees for refuge to Viṣṇu.

Thus, when Vīrabhadra had set out with his gaṇas, evil signs were seen both by Dakṣa and by the gods.

Having fallen, they lay upon the ground like fierce serpents struck down, then, like balls, fell again and rose once more.
