Chapter Four·Viṣṇu's Teaching to Nārada·Verses 1–76
Still deluded by Śiva's māyā, Nārada storms to Viṣṇu's world and curses him — for the trick played on him — to become a man and suffer separation from a woman in turn, aided by monkeys; Viṣṇu accepts the curse without protest, recognizing Śiva's hand in it. When Śiva at last withdraws the māyā, Nārada is overcome with genuine remorse and begs forgiveness; Viṣṇu lifts him up and delivers a long teaching — that everything was Śiva's own doing, that Śiva alone is the unqualified Brahman who takes threefold form as Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa, that his very name burns away sin beyond measure, and that a true devotee keeps ash, rudrākṣa, the six-syllabled mantra, and unwavering, exclusive devotion. He sends Nārada to bathe at Śiva's holy fords, to Kāśī, and finally on to Brahmaloka, where Brahmā himself will relate Śiva's greatness and the hundred-name hymn.
