Sūta continues the tale: Viṣṇu, by Śiva's own will, conjures a vast māyā-city on Nārada's path, complete with a king, Śīlanidhi, holding a svayaṃvara for his daughter Śrīmatī. Smitten, Nārada begs Viṣṇu for his very form so the princess will choose him — and Viṣṇu grants him his body but gives him a monkey's face instead, a trick Nārada, still blinded by desire, never notices. At the svayaṃvara, unaware of his own grotesque appearance, he watches Śrīmatī pass him by and place her garland on Viṣṇu himself, disguised as a king, who vanishes with her. Two gaṇas of Rudra, sent in brahmin disguise to guard Nārada, mock him for his monkey face; shown his own reflection at last, Nārada curses them to be born as rākṣasas despite their brahmin birth — a curse the two gaṇas receive in silence, recognizing his delusion, before withdrawing to praise Śiva as the true author of everything that has happened.
