Sūta tells of Nārada's austerity in a Himālayan cave, and how Indra, fearing for his throne, sent Kāma and Vasanta to disturb it — only for their power to fail utterly on that very ground where Śiva had once burned Kāma to ash. Deluded by Śiva's māyā into pride at what he takes for his own victory over desire, Nārada proclaims it first to Rudra, who tenderly forbids him from ever repeating it, especially before Viṣṇu; then to Brahmā, who likewise forbids it; and finally, unable to help himself, to Viṣṇu — who, gently and without naming the true cause, points out that a lifelong celibate free of the threefold devotion was never at risk from desire to begin with. Nārada, still untouched by the lesson, laughs it off and credits it all to Viṣṇu's own grace before departing.

Nārada, best among knowers, did not consider what Brahmā had said beneficial, deluded by Śiva's māyā, the sprout of pride firmly rooted in his mind.
