Vyāsa opens the Rudra Saṃhitā with his own invocation of Śiva, then the sages of Naimiṣa forest, having heard the Vidyeśvara Saṃhitā, press Sūta with a run of questions about Śiva and Pārvatī themselves: how the unqualified Śiva comes to bear qualities, how he abides before creation, plays through its course, and stands at its end, how easily he is pleased and what he grants, the manifestation of the three gods from his own body, and the full story of Umā's own manifestation, marriage and household life. Sūta answers that he will follow the very dialogue in which Nārada once asked his father Brahmā these same questions, at Hari's own prompting — a frame within a frame that the sages, delighted, urge him to relate in full.
