Sūta narrates how Śiva himself once told Pārvatī the greatness of rudrākṣa: how it arose from tears that fell when Śiva opened his eyes at play, its grading by size (smaller is always more potent), colour by varṇa, and the counts proper to a crown, sacred thread, and each bodily point, up to the full 1,100-bead scheme that makes a man's very form worthy of worship like Rudra's own. Śiva relates how Yama once forbade his own messengers ever to summon a wearer of ash and rudrākṣa, however sinful, and sets out the fourteen kinds of rudrākṣa by number of faces — from the one-faced, which is Śiva himself, to the fourteen-faced, supreme Śiva — each identified with its own deity and its power to remove a specific sin or grant a specific fruit. The chapter, and with it the whole Vidyeśvara Saṃhitā, closes as Sūta resumes the narration and declares the Saṃhitā complete.

The white rudrākṣa is prescribed here for the bodies of the twice-born alone; the deep red is joyfully [prescribed] for kṣatriyas; the yellow, again and again, O Umā, must then be worn daily, of necessity, by vaiśyas; and likewise the black by śūdras — this is the path declared by the śruti, O daughter of the mountain.

The student, the forest-dweller, the householder, and the ascetic should hold it by rule; devoted to this supreme secret, one should never be without it. This wearing of rudrākṣa is obtained by merit; those who abandon it go to all the hells.

First āmalaka-sized, then smaller still, diseased, bitten by thorns, gnawed by worms, and likewise lacking the fine hole in the frame of their body — such rudrākṣas should never be worn by those who desire good fortune, [being fit only] to be discarded like a dog's leaving; the rudrākṣa is my auspicious liṅga, O Umā; the subtle one is always the most excellent.
