Sūta expounds the greatness of sacred ash: its kinds, great (śrauta, smārta, laukika) and small, and the rule of wearing it with or without mantra according to varṇa and āśrama. He declares that no varṇa, āśrama, or gender is exempt from wearing the tripuṇḍra — women, widows, the fallen, even a caṇḍāla who wears it becomes worthy of worship — and that its power to burn away sin, from petty theft to the gravest crimes, has no equal, while its neglect or its reviling brings hell itself. He answers, with reverence, the request to keep this teaching secret, then sets out the detailed anatomy of the triple line: the nine deities presiding over each of its three strokes (built from the three sounds of the praṇava, the three fires, the three Vedas, the three guṇas, and Śiva's own three forms), and the schemes of thirty-two, sixteen, eight, and five bodily points at which it should be applied, each with its own presiding deities and mantras.

One beyond varṇa and āśrama should always [wear it] out of the supreme conviction "I am Śiva"; and the Śiva-yogi should always wear it, even with the Īśāna [mantra].

One should not eat water or food, even a little, without wearing ash and the rudrākṣa; if a householder, a forest-dweller, an ascetic, a student, or one of mixed caste eats [without them], he eats sin and goes to hell — then, for those of the [four] varṇas, by the recitation of the Gāyatrī, and for the ascetic, by the recitation of the chief mantra, the praṇava, release [from that fault] comes about.

Those who revile Maheśvara, Hara, the very foundation of the three worlds; those who revile the wearer of the triple line — there is a fault merely in beholding them. They are indeed born comparable to a mixed-caste, a pig, a demon, a donkey, a dog, a jackal, and a worm; they are, once and for all, wholly given to sin, and hellish.

Having seen them, let one behold the moon and the sun, by night and by day — not merely in a dream — and let one, so [purified], be released through the recitation of the Rudra-sūkta of the śruti.
