Chapter 23 · The Greatness of Śiva's Name · Verses 1–45

The sages ask Sūta to declare, in turn, the greatness of ash, of rudrākṣa, and of Śiva's name. Sūta opens with the name, ash and rudrākṣa borne together on the body — equal, he says, on Brahmā's own scale, to bathing at the Triveṇī, since the name is the Gaṅgā, ash the Yamunā, and rudrākṣa the hidden Sarasvatī. He then unfolds the name's own supremacy: no sin a man could commit can ever outweigh the sin Śiva's name destroys; it is the axe that fells the tree of saṃsāra's root-sins, the boat across saṃsāra's ocean, the nectar that alone brings peace to those burned by sin's wildfire — proven by King Indradyumna and a deeply sinful brahmin woman, who both won the highest goal by its power alone before the chapter turns to the greatness of ash.
