The two gaṇas of Śiva, still in brahmin disguise, beg release from Nārada's curse; unable to undo it, he reshapes it into a blessing — future greatness as mighty lords of the whole universe, ending in death at Viṣṇu's own hands and a return to their true station (an unnamed foretelling of Rāvaṇa and Kumbhakarṇa). Nārada then makes pilgrimage to Kāśī and travels on to Brahmaloka, where, having already learned the paths of devotion, knowledge, austerity, giving and pilgrimage, he puts to Brahmā the one question still unanswered: the true nature of Śiva — how the unqualified comes to bear qualities, his state before, during and after creation, how easily he is pleased and what he grants, and the full story of Śiva's and Umā's own manifestation, marriage, household life, and the birth of Kumāra.
