Brahmā answers Nārada's question with the true account of Śiva's nature: at the great dissolution, when all was a formless dark, only sad-brahman remained; from that formless one, by its own play, a form arose — Sadāśiva — and from him, undivided from his own body, his Śakti (Ambikā/Prakṛti); together they fashioned the field Śivaloka, called Kāśī, Ānandavana and Avimukta, whence the two never depart even at dissolution. Wishing for a third to bear the burden of creation, preservation and destruction, Śiva caused a puruṣa of unmatched beauty to spring from the tenth limb of his left side; naming him Viṣṇu and granting him the Veda by the path of the breath, Śiva bade him perform tapas. After twelve thousand years without the vision he sought, Viṣṇu performed tapas anew and awoke enlightened, his weary limbs streaming water that filled the void and became brahman itself; sleeping upon those waters he became Nārāyaṇa, and from him, in order, emanated the twenty-four tattvas of Sāṅkhya, until, having gathered them into himself, he slept on in the form of brahman.
