Chapter Seven·Viṣṇu and Brahmā's Dispute·Verses 1–69
Brahmā continues his answer to Nārada with his own origin: born, by Śiva's wish, from a lotus at the navel of the sleeping Nārāyaṇa, and unable, in his māyā-born confusion, to trace the lotus's stalk to its root or to recognise his own maker, he performs tapas until Viṣṇu appears to him — but each, deluded, claims supremacy over the other, until a fire-liṅga appears between them to settle the quarrel. Viṣṇu descends as a boar and Brahmā ascends as a haṃsa, each seeking an end to the liṅga for a thousand years, and each returning, wearied, having found neither root nor summit; humbled, the two bow together before that unfathomable form, unable to see it and unable to stop bowing.
